Olivu is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Son Goku first encountered him in the Afterlife, after dying in the battle against Perfect Cell. Olivu was a fighter from Earth, but died hundreds of years prior. North Kaiō claimed that some of Earth's legendary warriors were based on Olivu[note 1]. He was voiced by Masaharu Satō in his initial appearances but was replaced by several other actors in his later appearances.
Biography
Olivu was born and lived his life on Earth at some point in the distant past. A hero and powerful martial artist, his deeds were remembered in later mythology. He was also gifted and just enough to be granted his body in the Afterlife. He may have trained with North Kaiō and by Age 767 was training on Dai Kaiō's planet in the hopes of being trained by the master himself.[2]
In the Age 767 Afterlife Tournament, Olivu was one of the finalists from the North Galaxy. He defeated Chop Chai in the first round but was subsequently defeated by Paikuhan in the next.[3]
Name
Olivu's name is derived from "olive" (オリーブ in Japanese). His overall appearance and clothing suggests a Greek origin; olives are commonly cultivated in and associated with Greek culture. Several of the Afterlife Tournament characters are named for foods include Sate (for satay) and Migoren (an Indonesian fried noodle dish).
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball Z interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Olivu and the entire Afterlife Tournament arc was written to depict Son Goku's experience in the afterlife prior to the time-skip and the arrival of Boo.
Notable Skills
Olivu is a formidable martial artist, one of the most powerful in the history of Earth. He has continued to train and improve himself after his death.
Performance
Olivu is played by Masaharu Satō in his initial appearances, then replaced for one-off episodes by Hisao Egawa and Yasuhiko Kawazu. Satō played numerous bit parts throughout the series and eventually became the primary voice actor for the Turtle Hermit.
Notable Appearances

Notes
- ↑ Olivu's appearance and outfit resembles that of a Greek hero such as Hercules or Achilles and Kaiō may have been alluding to a Dragon World equivalent of those legends.
