Synopsis

Gohan rushes to where Freeza and one other ki are located. The other warriors have gathered, but Goku is nowhere to be seen. Freeza appears with his father King Cold. Freeza was left on the brink of death after his battle with Goku, and once King Cold's spaceship saved him as he drifted through space, he was revived by becoming a cyborg. Freeza orders his underlings to kill all the Earthlings until Goku's arrival. But a boy mysteriously appears and instantly cuts down Freeza's underlings.[1]

Summary

Part A

Gohan cries out to his father in confusion as he rushes toward the place where Freeza will land. He senses the approach of Kuririn, who joins him in flight. Gohan asks Kuririn if he has sensed it, and Kuririn says yes; he could not have missed it, after what Freeza did to him. He recalls his death at Freeza's hands on Planet Namek. Gohan asks Kuririn if Freeza was not killed by Goku, but Kuririn would like to know that too. They fly faster toward the place where Freeza will land.

On King Cold's spaceship, he drinks wine surrounded by his soldiers and views the Earth as they approach. He observes that it is good to tour the frontier from time to time, but Freeza's anger is beginning to build, sparking electricity and frightening the soldiers. His father tells him he should not let any opponent get him so agitated, but Freeza says he cannot help it; he is excited.

Vegeta rushes toward the landing spot as Yamcha struggles to keep up. Vegeta thinks to himself that Kakarrot must have gone too easy on Freeza, just as he feared. He wonders who this second person could be who is so much stronger than Freeza himself. Chiaotzu asks Tenshinhan as they fly toward the location whether this ki could be... He stops short of naming anyone, but Tenshinhan is afraid.

On the spaceship, Cold and Freeza are informed that they are about to land. Vegeta and Yamcha land in a rocky field beneath them, and Yamcha looks around worriedly. Vegeta says that this his where they will land; Yamcha wants to know if he is sure, but Vegeta tells him to be quiet if he does not know himself. At least Vegeta has actually fought Freeza. A ship descends, but it is just Bulma and Pu'er in a helicopter. Bulma calls out to them as she lands. Pu'er greets Yamcha, who asks what they are doing here. Bulma tells him they came to see Freeza; Bulma never once got to see him on Planet Namek. Yamcha asks if she knows how dangerous he is, and she says that of course she knows; that is why they came. Freeza can blow up the planet wherever she is, so she came to have a look. Vegeta silently admires her courage; she is not just a vulgar woman after all.

Freeza and King Cold land on Earth.

Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu land, and Tenshinhan asks what Vegeta is doing back on Earth. Vegeta asks him if he has something to say about it. Tenshinhan removes his outer clothing and says that of course he does; they were killed by his hand. Tenshinhan does not understand how Yamcha can tolerate living with him. Vegeta laughs and insults him, but Yamcha steps between them, reminding them that this is not a good time. Vegeta smiles and turns his back to them. Tenshinhan asks Yamcha if it is Freeza, and Yamcha confirms it, but Vegeta scolds both of them, telling them to suppress their battle power; Freeza and his men will have Scouters. He compliments the Namekian for having already masked his power. Yamcha is confused, but he and the others look around and spot Piccolo standing not too far away. Yamcha wonders how long he has been there.

Kuririn and Gohan spot the others and land; they realize that everyone else sensed Freeza's approach, too. Bulma greets them, but Yamcha asks Gohan whether Goku has returned, and Gohan shakes his head. Bulma and Pu'er are deflated, and Yamcha is disappointed. Piccolo shouts to let everyone know that Freeza has arrived. The ship descends beneath the clouds, and everyone freaks out. Freeza does not notice them as the ship flies overhead and lands on the other side of a ridge. Now that Freeza has landed, Gohan is sure it is him. Freeza somehow survived Planet Namek. Kuririn is sure there is someone with him, now, too. Cold's men tell him and Freeza that the landing is complete.

Part B

Gohan assures Piccolo he will fight.

The Earth gang is terrified. Vegeta warns everyone not to fly; they should approach on foot to escape Scouter detection. Piccolo asks Gohan if he is going to the battlefield, and Gohan says yes. Piccolo nods in acknowledgement. Yamcha cannot believe that Freeza is really so strong. Gohan tells him that he can get much, much stronger than that. Tenshinhan cannot believe they fought someone so strong. Yamcha does not think they can do anything even if they get closer; Freeza is unimaginably strong, and there are two of them! Piccolo tells him he is welcome to stay there and do nothing. They all know how hopeless it is. Vegeta offers to spell it out for them: this is the end of the Earth.

Freeza and King Cold emerge from the ship protected by a barrier; the soldiers await them outside. The barrier is released as Freeza takes stock of his surroundings. He thinks Earth is not a bad planet, but then, he has a hallucination of Goku as a Super Saiyan, standing on a rock nearby. The illusion fades as Goku turns around to smile at him, and Freeza becomes agitated again, sparking electricity. His hands bleed as he clenches his fists, remembering Goku's words: "I am the Super Saiyan who has come here from Earth in order to kill you. I am Son Goku!" He remembers his last, failed attempt to kill Goku, and the destruction of Planet Namek. He remembers floating in space among the planet's wreckage, barely alive, half his body gone, not believing he could be beaten by a monkey.

Freeza's maimed body floats in the wreckage of Planet Namek, as seen through the surveillance on King Cold's ship.

King Cold stubbornly searched the wreckage, refusing to believe that Freeza could be dead as one of his soldiers said he must be. His own anger and desire for revenge caused the spaceship's window to shatter, carrying the faithless soldier into space. Then another soldier found Freeza among the debris. Cold ordered them to bring Freeza aboard. He was brought to a planet where he was healed in a regeneration tank and then fully repaired with mechanical parts. When Freeza woke, he informed his father that they would be going to Earth to kill the Super Saiyan.

Back in the present, Freeza vows to return the pain he suffered at Goku's hands many times over. Cold says he does not care about the Earthlings, but he wants to make sure the Super Saiyan is killed, no matter what. He will not abide someone stronger than their clan in this universe. Freeza tells him that they should be able to defeat him if they fight together, and with his power-up, he might be able to do it alone. Cold tells him it will be three hours before the Super Saiyan arrives, and asks if they should wait. Freeza says yes, but he thinks that killing all the Earthlings before Goku arrives will be a nice shock for him. He thinks three hours will be enough time to kill them all. He laughs at this thought, celebrating his revenge in advance.

Trunks lands in front of Freeza and King Cold.

Meanwhile, the Earth crew creeps slowly toward their location. Gohan helps Bulma climb the rocks, and Yamcha is morose. He was only just brought back to life, and now he has to die again. Gohan and Bulma look back at him in surprise. Freeza orders the soldiers to spread out and kill all the Earthlings one by one. Three soldiers take off immediately, but then a mysterious blade strikes. Their bodies fall to the ground in pieces near Freeza. A lavender-haired young man descends, sheathing his sword as he lands to stand in front of Cold and Freeza. Freeza asks the young man if they can do something for him, and he informs them that he has come to kill them. Who can he be? Where is Goku? What of Earth's fate?!

Production

The animation supervisor for this episode is Kazuya Hisada; his corrections are evident throughout the episode, and he also contributes uncredited key animation. The episode is directed and storyboarded by Yoshihiro Ueda, however the flashback portions are likely copied from Mitsuo Hashimoto's storyboard for Dragon Ball Z Episode 105.

There are two entries for this episode on Sakugabooru, a website dedicated to documenting the highlights of the industry's greatest animators.

The table below provides a guide to each key animator's work within the episode. Unless a source is provided, each attribution is a presumption based on the animator's best known style traits and handwriting.

Description Example Description Example
Tomekichi Takeuchi begins the episode, but his work is corrected by animation supervisor Kazuya Hisada. After the Shimanuki pan, Takeuchi returns. His work is corrected by Hisada, but there are some uncorrected drawings, like this Gohan.
Takeuchi's uncorrected work. Naoki Tate's work begins with this scene. There are some Hisada corrections throughout, but this frame and the following are uncorrected.
Layout and genga by animator Yōko Iizuka for cut 47A. Tate's work continues up to the beginning of Freeza's flashback, comprised of reused footage from Dragon Ball Z Episode 105.
The yellow sheet is a Hisada correction of Iizuka's work in cut 47A, and the white genga sheet on the right is an impact frame. King Cold's rescue mission begins with key animation from Hisada. This genga is from cut 222.
Iizuka's lightning effects. Masako Misumi's King Cold can be distinguished from Hisada's partly by the way she draws straight, evenly-spaced lines in his face.
Iizuka's work can often be identified by her distinctive chin shape. The scenes on Freeza Planet No. 79 are animated by Shimanuki.
The gathering on Earth before Freeza lands is Hisada's own key animation. Misumi returns after the reused Tate animation of Freeza's bleeding fist. Part of her work here is documented on sakugabooru.
Masahiro Shimanuki's layout for cut 134. Part of his work here is documented on sakugabooru. Shimanuki is responsible for the rest of Part A. Iizuka's layout for cut 279. We also have her genga for this scene. She is responsible for most of the remainder of the episode.

Shimanuki's pan is reused at the beginning of Part B.
The reveal of Trunks is presumed to be Hisada's work, but it might be a correction of Iizuka's work.
