"Bye-Bye Everyone!! Goku's Last Instant Movement" is the one hundred and eighty-eighth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 02 June 1993, receiving a ratings share of 21.4%. It was written by Hiroshi Toda and directed by Masahiro Hosoda.
Synopsis
Squirming in pain, Cell returns to the stage before his perfect form. Even then he still comes at Gohan, but knowing he is no match, he swells up his body, attempting to self-destruct and take the Earth with him! As everyone is at their wits end and with only 10 seconds remaining, Goku firms his resolve! He gives his parting words to Gohan, and then teleports with Cell to Planet Kaiō, dying in the explosion with Kaiō and the rest!! The Earth has been saved, but Gohan and the others are gripped with sorrow. And then before their eyes, Cell appears once again!
Summary
Part A
Cell retches, still in his giant form, while Son Gohan watches. In futility, he grabs Artificial Human No. 18's unconscious body as if to reabsorb her. He screams. On the sidelines, the ZTV reporter continues to provide commentary, but his cameraman reminds him that the audio is broken too. Cell's body begins to change and in moments he is his second form once again. Perfect Cell is gone.
Cell attacks again, but in this state he is no match for Gohan who knocks him to the ground immediately. Cell retreats and nearly falls into a crevice. He dangles by his fingers over the abyss, apparently forgetting that he can fly. Gohan stomps on his fingers and face to knock him; only then does he power up to fly to the surface. Gohan beats him down again. As Son Goku screams from the sidelines to finish him, Gohan continues to taunt Cell and walks over to him slowly. Taking the few moments that he has, Cell swells up to many times his size like a balloon and prepares his final attack: he's going to self-destruct! Piccolo realizes that with Cell's power the way it is-- even in his weakened state-- he will destroy the world. Cell tells Gohan that there is nothing he can do; to attack him now will just cause him to explode earlier. Cell counts down... one minute... forty-five seconds...
Gohan flashes back to his father's warning to destroy Cell right away. He realizes that he is to blame to allowing this to happen. He collapses to his knees in defeat.
Goku turns to his friends and smiles. He can think of only one way to save the Earth. While his friends ask what he intends to do, he just says "bye-bye, everyone" and prepares to teleport. The balloon-shaped Artificial Human announces only ten seconds left. Goku materializes next to Cell and smiles.
Part B
While he holds onto Cell and prepares to teleport, Goku reassures Gohan that he did a good job and that he is sorry. He tells his son goodbye and teleports himself and Cell away from the arena. On Kaiō's Planet, Kaiō, Bubbles, and Gregory look on in terror as Goku arrives with the imminently-exploding Cell. Goku apologizes to his former master as Cekk explodes, destroying the planet and the four of them in a blast of white light.
Everyone on the battlefield is in shock. Goku's ki is gone. Kuririn falls to his knees. Gohan screams for his father. Far away at Kame House, the Turtle Hermit sits drinking tea with Bulma and the younger Trunks. He can no longer sense Goku or Cell's ki. Bulma recoils in anguish. Back at the battlefield, the ZTV reporter and others struggle to understand what just happened.
Kuririn walks over to Gohan, crying on the ground. Placing one hand on his back, he reassures him that he and his father did what they needed to do. The world is safe. Gohan admits that he got carried away. If only he had defeated Cell when he could have, his father would not have needed to die. Kuririn reminds him that without his power, the world would have been destroyed. Goku, he tells Gohan, died with a contented look on his face. Kuririn is sure that he is proud of Gohan and how much he has grown. He helps Gohan up before noticing No. 18 still laying in the dirt. He picks her up.
At the Serpent Road, Goku apologizes to Kaiō, Bubbles, and Gregory for catching them up in this. Goku and the others now all wear halos, but are otherwise unchanged by the experience. Kaiō is furious that Goku would use him in this way to save just one planet, but Goku just says that he keeps apologizing for that. Goku realizes that he doesn't sense Cell's spirit anywhere. Could he have been sent directly to Hell? Kaiō realizes that he is right and searches for him. Kaiō tells Goku that anyone who dies must go to Enma-daiō.[note 1] There is only one explanation: Cell is still alive!
In the ruins of the Cell Games, Vegeta demands to know what Kuririn is doing with No. 18. If she is alive, he says, they need to kill her immediately. Kuririn says that she didn't seem to be a bad person.
Smoke and lightning appear on the battlefield. Cell's hand, once again Perfect, emerges to shoot a death beam.[note 2] Vegeta is shocked at the sudden attack against his son. Cell emerges from the cloud, fully restored.

- ↑ Although not depicted, Kaiō's dialogue suggests that he, Goku, Bubbles, and Gregory went through Enma-daiō's check-in station before proceeding onto the Serpent Road, rather than appearing there immediately with halos after the blast.
- ↑ Cell's death beam shot at Trunks has a small animation error. It depicts the blast initially missing Trunks as it flies past all of the warriors, only to hit Trunks who is somehow also at the end of the line.
