"A Future of Despair!! Trunks, the Man Who Lived Through Hell" is the one hundred and sixty-fourth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 11 November 1992, receiving a ratings share of 18.2%. It was written by Hiroshi Toda and directed by Kazuhito Kikuchi.
Synopsis
Endlessly raising his ki, Trunks transforms into a form with even more enlarged muscles. His ki far surpasses Vegeta's, and even Cell's. Trunks came from a miserable future overrun by the artificial humans. In order to change this future, he must defeat Cell. After reaching his full power, Trunks fights while using power greater than Cell's. But for some reason, Cell announces Trunks' defeat.
Summary
Part A
Trunks powers up to a new highly-muscular form while Cell waits patiently to see his new strength. Artificial Human No. 16, still laying injured on the ground, is very impressed by Trunks's power. Even Kuririn, flying away with a prone Vegeta, can see the effects of Trunks's power surging around him. As far away as Kame House, the Turtle Hermit and his guests feel tremors from Trunks's rapidly growing ki. Chi-Chi thinks it is an earthquake! On God's Temple, Tenshinhan is impressed by how powerful Trunks has become: he's now stronger than Vegeta. Surely, he will be able to defeat Cell? As Trunks finishes powering up, he tells Cell that he will not allow is own miserable future to be recreated.
Trunks narrates to Cell a story from his past, this world's future: No. 17 and No. 18 attack a city. The population tries to fight them off with guns, but it is no use and the city is destroyed. The Artificial Humans complain that they are bored and wish for someone more challenging to face them. Trunks then describes how the Artificial Humans defeated Son Goku's friends, with No. 17 taking out Vegeta and Kuririn, while No. 18 did the same for Piccolo, Yamcha, and Yajirobe. Eventually, there were only two fighters left: Trunks and Son Gohan. Cutting back to his story, Gohan and Trunks appear in the city that the Artificial Humans demolished. Gohan turns into a Super Saiyan and goes in for the attack, leaving Trunks behind. Gohan is no match for the combined might of the Artificial Humans and Trunks is forced to rush in wielding a sword. He manages to trim a few of No. 18's hairs, but that just makes her angrier. Two-on-two, the fight is less one-sided but the Artificial Humans still have the advantage. Gohan launches a masenko which buries the Artificial Humans underneath a pile of rubble. In the confusion, Gohan and Trunks slip away to fight another day. Nos. 17 and 18 launch ki attack after ki attack at the city to level every building. While Trunks and Gohan hide from the Artificial Humans, Gohan tells Trunks of Son Goku's death and how they would not be in this situation if he were still alive. Gohan wants to become as strong as his father once was. Smiling, Gohan and Trunks leave their hiding place and resume their attack. Trunks narrates that, in time, even Son Gohan was killed, leaving him as the future's final remaining warrior.
With his attention back on the present, Trunks tells Cell that is the reason why he must be defeated.
Part B
Cell smiles as Trunks continues to power up. He says that Trunks may even have surpassed his power! Doctor Gero, he says, would be pleased to know that he had found someone to test his ultimate power against. And while Trunks continues to power up, Cell tells his story.
In Doctor Gero's Lab, an embryo sits in a large glass tube. A nearby computer screen reads that the essences of Son Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Freeza are being combined into a new entity: Cell. The embryo grows bigger and a voiceover from Doctor Gero speaks with optimism about how he looks forward to seeing his creation becoming Perfect. Eventually, the embryo grows large enough to no longer fit into the tank and it explodes, revealing a larval form of Cell. Doctor Gero's voice commands the young Cell to absorb the life forces of humans and, eventually, Artificial Human No. 17 and No. 18 to reach his Perfect state. The lab explodes and Cell crawls out, molting his larval skin and becoming Imperfect Cell.
This version of Cell found the world already in ruins, but still he absorbed humans to become stronger. He searched the world, fighting and absorbing many people, but he never found No. 17 or No. 18. They had been killed before he was even born. Cell explains that he discovered that they had been killed by Trunks and used his time machine to travel back to this timeline where he was able to absorb this timeline's Artificial Humans and become Perfect.
Their stories over and Trunks fully transformed with ki, the pair battle. They seem to be on even ground for a time as both of them take major blows from the other, before Cell admits that Trunks has become more powerful than him. However, he reveals that Trunks is still unable to beat him like this.

Notes
- This episode depicts Trunks and Cell swapping stories about their respective origins. These are explicitly Trunks's and Cell's versions of events, told in the heat of battle against a mortal enemy. Differences between later events as established in the Trunks TV special and Dragon Ball Super are best understood in that light.
- Kuririn is depicted as being killed by No. 17 only, while in the TV special he is killed by the combined force of both Artificial Humans
- In the Trunks TV special, Trunks is not seen with his sword until after Gohan's death. Here, he has it several years earlier. Similarly, Gohan's scar appears in this episode prior to losing his arm, while he received it later in the special.
- Yajrobe is shown being killed, but survived the attack as established in Dragon Ball Super.

Tidbits
- This is the first episode of the series to not include present-day scenes with either Son Goku or Son Gohan, although both are depicted in flashbacks from Trunks's timeline. Goku last missed an episode during the Garlic Jr. arc (ending in episode 120), while Gohan had not missed a regular episode since episode 55.
- This episode features a rare flashback-within-a-flashback as Son Gohan describes the death of his father to Trunks.
