Synopsis

Gohan collapses, having used up all of his power, and a satisfied look spreads over his face. Yamcha and the others carry him to Dende's. Having lost his rival Goku, Vegeta flies off alone. Left in the desert, Satan announces to the television staff that he defeated Cell. Trunks and No. 18 are carried to the Heavenly Realm, and Shenlong is summoned. Shenlong restores all those killed by Cell to life, but from the afterlife Goku tells everyone that he's fine being dead.

Summary

Part A

At the crater that was once the Cell Games Arena, Son Gohan lays panting on the ground. His energy is spent-- he is no longer even a Super Saiyan-- but he smiles contentedly that the battle is over. Piccolo congratulates him for defeating Cell and the rest of the wounded warriors, Yamcha, Kuririn, and Tenshinhan look on with an appearance of delight and relief. In the sky after launching the blast that distracted Cell enough to allow Gohan to win, Vegeta floats limp. Kuririn tells Gohan that they will take him to Dende on God's Temple so that he can be healed even though they are out of senzu. Gohan just laughs in exhausted relief.

Yamcha picks up Gohan who thanks him then falls asleep immediately. Kuririn is worried, but Yamcha reassures him that he only passed out with exhaustion. Tenshinhan asks Yamcha is he is able to take Gohan all the way to the Heavenly Realm, but Yamcha agrees because it is nothing compared to what Gohan just did. Tenshinhan carries Future Trunks's body. Kuririn offers to take Artificial Human No. 18 as well, but everyone recoils in shock. After all, he claims, she was one of Cell's victims as well. Vegeta flies down and Piccolo tells the others to go on ahead. He offers to help Vegeta but is rebuffed. He flies off after the others, leaving the Saiyan to his thoughts. Vegeta admits to himself that he has been surpassed by both Goku and Gohan. He vows to never fight again,

As everyone leaves, Mister Satan looks on the battlefield in disbelief. Just then, the ZTV reporter wakes up from being knocked unconscious and asks Satan what happened. The reporter admits that he did not see anything after the beam struggle between Cell and the "bento salesman". Thinking quickly, Satan admits that HE defeated Cell. The reporter is in disbelief, but Pizza and the rest of his entourage vouch for him. The cameraman discovers that the radio in their broadcast van is still working and they announce the good news to the world: Mister Satan saved everyone! Around the world, everyone begins to celebrate but the King of Earth looks doubtful but is glad that God heard their prayers. Chi-Chi cries into her father's arms.

Flying about the Serpentine Road, Son Goku and Kaiō are relieved that it is all over. Goku's stomach growls. He asks Kaiō if he has any food, but the master yells in response that Goku destroyed his planet and he has nothing.

On the way to God's Temple, Kuririn and the others fly up Karin's Tower. They pause and greet Yajirobe and Karin on the way up. Yajirobe says that he would have joined them for the battle, but his airplane was broken. No one believes him and they continue flying up.

Dende rushes to meet the group on their arrival, immediately asking to see Son Gohan. Dende heals him and Gohan wakes up. Dende expresses sadness for the death of Son Goku, but Gohan tells the group that during his battle with Cell, he heard his father's voice. He could feel his father's ki and even smell him. He credits his father's spiritual presence as the reason that he could defeat Cell. Piccolo congratulates Gohan on his victory.

Part B

Dende next heals Artificial Human No. 18. Kuririn is relieved, but Yamcha shouts from afar that he needs to run away or be killed. No. 18 says she isn't going to kill him, then realizes where she is. Kuririn tells her that she is on God's Temple and that Cell has been defeated. Yamcha shouts from afar that she had better not rampage again because Gohan can defeat her. Piccolo tells No. 18 that Kuririn was the one that stood up for her after Cell spit her out. Gohan shouts that he gets it! Kuririn is fond of No. 18. For this, he wins a blow to the back of the head by an embarrassed Kuririn. No. 18 asks if he expected her to be gracious? To say thank you and clap her hands together? She turns and flies off.

Piccolo reminds everyone that they need to use the dragon balls to bring Future Trunks and the others back to life. They bring together the dragon balls and summon Shenlong.[note 1] Far below, No. 18 sees the darkening skies and turns around. Shenlong appears in the sky and asks for two wishes. Gohan is surprised, but remembers that Dende upgraded him when he reactivated the dragon balls. No. 18 hides behind a pillar of the temple as the group makes their wishes. Yamcha first wishes for everyone killed by Cell to be brought back to life. A red light shines around the body of Future Trunks...

Far away, Mister Satan is headlining an impromptu parade as the world celebrates his victory over Cell. People chant his name and "I Love Satan" banners. Pizza is in a car just behind Satan, while the ZTV reporter rides with the champ. The cameraman runs out of the crowd and tells something to the reporter. He joyfully announces that the members of the military and others that were killed by Cell have come back to life! Cell takes credit for everything and the crowd goes wild!

Future Trunks wakes and sits up as No. 18 looks on in amazement. Piccolo is disappointed that he is unable to sense Son Goku's ki. Shenlong reminds everyone that they still have one more wish. Yamcha asks for Goku to be brought back, but Shenlong says that he is unable to do so as he has been brought back once already. Kuririn suggests turning back time to before Goku died, but Piccolo reminds him that Cell would be brought back to life again also. Dende suggests that they use the Namek dragon balls to bring back Goku since they can be used to resurrect any number of times. Suddenly, Goku's voice rings out! He says that Bulma once told him that he brings bad guys to the world to face him. He says that the Earth will be more peaceful without him around, so he'd like to stay dead. He will be treated special in the next world; normal people and bad guys just become spirits, but he's been allowed to keep his body. He will never age and he'll be able to train with fighting experts of the past. Goku also admits that Kaiō has also decided to stay dead to stay with Goku. He claims that Gohan will be more reliable than him anyway. With a final "Bye-bye!", Goku heads off into the next life.

Everyone at the Temple stares in stunned silence. Kuririn remarks that for a dead guy, he sure seems cheerful. Yamcha remembers how Goku recovered quickly with just an "oh well" after his tail had been cut off for the first time. Tenshinhan remembers how Goku left them all behind to train with God after the fight with Demon King Piccolo. Piccolo remembers Goku giving him a senzu after the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Gohan remembers Goku confronting Freeza on Namek after Vegeta'a death. He says that his father always gave him courage. Gohan thanks his father as Shenlong impatiently waits for the next wish...
