Synopsis

Vegeta and the others are all surprised at Goku's announcement that he gives up. Afraid that his turn might come again, Satan pretends to have a stomachache. But Goku says there is someone even stronger than Cell, and chooses Gohan as the next challenger. In response to his father's expectations, Gohan resolves to confront Cell. Furthermore, Goku recuperates Cell with a senzu, amazing Kuririn and everyone. After unleashing a tremendous ki, Gohan confronts Cell, who underestimates him! Even while being hit by Cell, he stands up again without even flinching...

Summary

Part A

Cell stares at Son Goku from high above and asks him to confirm. Is Goku resigning from the fight? Goku confirms that he is. Cell reminds him that at the conclusion of the Cell Games, if he is not defeated, that he will destroy the world. Is Goku sure that he wants to resign? Goku says that he is not the only fighter, but Cell disagrees: Goku is the greatest remaining fighter, all the rest will surely lose. On the sidelines, the ZTV reporter is thrilled that Mister Satan will be able to rejoin the match after his rest. Pizza and his disciples cheer him on, but suddenly Satan doubles over in pain. He has a stomachache and cannot fight! Pizza offers him medication, but Satan demurs and continues to clutch at his pain-ridden abdomen.

Goku asks Cell if he may select the next challenger. Goky says that he is certain this mystery combatant can with the match. Cell asks if he is really stronger than both he and Goku are and Goku agrees. Cell laughs. After a dramatic pause, and a moment where Mister Satan is worried that Goku will pick him, Goku calls on Son Gohan as the next challenger. Gohan stares aghast. At Goku's home, Chi-Chi screams that he is forcing Gohan to fight as her father tries to keep her from destroying the TV. The nearby reporters mishear and think that Goku wants a break for a meal.

Goku flies up and tells Gohan that he can do it. Cell and Piccolo both scream at Goku, Cell because he is not giving him a challenging partner, and Piccolo because Goku is putting his son's life in danger. Goku tells Piccolo that Gohan has been fighting since he was just a child, and is much more powerful than he was as a boy. Goku adds that he just started to see a hidden power within Gohan while they were training. Goku asks Gohan if he was able to follow the fight, and Gohan agrees but says that it was because Goku wasn't fighting at full power. Goku disagrees: he was fighting at his best, even if he is not sure if Cell was or not. Gohan agrees to fight and removes his Namekian cloak before flying down towards Cell.

Part B

As Gokan arrives, the reporters are confused. Where is the lunch? Is this boy offering to sell Cell lunch? Around the world, viewers react. An elderly couple that know Chi-Chi is sad to learn that Gohan has become a delinquent and now sells bento boxes. At Kame House, even the Turtle Hermit does not think that Gohan is powerful enough.

Goku asks Kuririn for a senzu before throwing it to Cell. Everyone is aghast. Goku says that he is only playing fair because Cell is tired, but no one likes it. Cell tells him that Goku will come to regret giving him the help, but that he will accept it. Eating the senzu, Cell is quickly back to full strength. Gohan begins to power up himself, sending golden shockwaves around the Cell Games area. The reporters realize that he may not be there to sell lunches.

On his planet, Kaiō senses Gohan's incredible ki. He speculates that Gohan may actually have surpassed his father.

Back on the battlefield, Piccolo and Vegeta are amazed at how powerful Gohan has become. Cell flies down and prepares to face him, happy that Goku was not bluffing about his son's power. Even so, he tells Gohan that he will be dead so quickly that he will not come to know true terror. Cell begins his attack and Gohan seems to have no problem either blocking or dodging his blows, however he does not fight back. Cell admits that he was holding back and suddenly charges at full speed, grabbing the boy and slamming him with punches to the face. Goku looks on smugly as his son gets pummeled. Cell finishes his barrage with a downward kick, sending Gohan crashing into the ground. Even so, the boy stands up and wipes blood off of his face. Gohan smiles and resumes his battle stance.
