Synopsis

Out in the wild, Goku and Piccolo challenge Raditz! But the gap between their powers is too great and they are no match. So while Goku holds Raditz back, Piccolo fires his new special attack, the Makankōsappō. But Raditz manages to dodge it by a hair's breadth! Goku seizes an opportunity to grasp hold of Raditz's tail, a Saiyan's weak spot, but the cowardly Raditz tricks Goku and escapes, and proceeds to torture him. It is at this point that Gohan, who had been locked up inside the spaceship, unleashes his dormant power with rage!![1]

Summary

Part A

Raditz faces off with Piccolo and Goku on the battlefield. Piccolo still cannot believe that his two Saiyan companions are even stronger than he is; Raditz laughs and says it is too late for him if he does not understand the terror of the Saiyans. Goku concedes the point and says he wishes he did not know that. Raditz says that fools who defy his orders will receive only death. Piccolo assumes that Goku must be excited about this fight, as he normally would be, but Goku says not this time; he is so frightened, he is shaking. Raditz assures him that his fear will become despair soon enough.

Goku demands to know where Gohan is hidden; Raditz explains that he locked the child in his pod because he was crying, in the crater just behind Goku. Goku runs to the crater to see for himself and finds Gohan crying for him from inside the pod. He flies up to hover above the crater and promises Gohan that he will rescue him soon. Raditz laughs and tells him this will never happen if they die first. Goku returns to the battlefield and he and Piccolo prepare to fight. They charge at Raditz and attack hand to hand, and Raditz counters both of them effortlessly. He lures them into the air and attacks both of them with energy blasts. Goku dodges, dropping to the ground and searching for Raditz, who appears behind him and kicks him to the ground, mocking both for failing to challenge him. Meanwhile, Piccolo has lost an arm, but he assures Goku he can still fight with one arm. Raditz laughs and promises their deaths are imminent.

Bulma, Kuririn, and the Turtle Hermit are en route to the battlefield in Bulma's ship. Kuririn wonders if Goku is okay, and Bulma has an uneasy feeling, like nothing she has ever felt before. She hopes nothing bad has happened. Muten Rōshi remains optimistic that Goku and Piccolo together will not go down easily, but Kuririn is still worried that Piccolo cannot be trusted; what if he defects and joins up with Raditz? The Turtle Hermit says that if Goku and Piccolo are killed, there is nothing they can do; the entire world will be finished.

Raditz asks if they are already done, and Piccolo asks Goku if he has any techniques in reserve. Goku does not, but Piccolo has been training, and he has something. Raditz asks what they are whispering about; he tells them that whatever strategy they have, it will not work; it will be easier for them if they just get on with the dying. But Goku is interested in Piccolo's new technique and asks him if he can do it with only one arm. Piccolo says that he can, but the attack will take some time to charge. He asks Goku to distract Raditz in the meantime, and Goku agrees, but he wonders if Piccolo's attack will really work on this guy. Piccolo says it probably will, and in any case, they have no other options. Piccolo laughs bitterly; he was saving this technique for Goku. Goku appreciates the irony that it might end up saving him; Piccolo promises that, if they prevail here, Goku is next. Goku laughs and Piccolo tells him this is not the time for it; Raditz wonders why their posture has changed. Goku says he is looking forward to this, and Piccolo tells him to do his best. Goku attacks, and Piccolo begins charging his Makankōsappō while Goku struggles with Raditz hand to hand, eventually getting kicked a fair distance to one side.

Part B

Goku rebounds from Raditz's kick, propelling himself into the air. Raditz curses his persistence, while Goku begins charging a Kamehameha. Raditz is in disbelief as he watches Goku's power skyrocket on his scouter, all the way up to 925. Raditz realizes that Goku is capable of concentrating his battle power into a single point. Then his scouter alerts him to a similar phenomenon behind him; Piccolo's Makankōsappō has raised his battle power to 1,020, and it is still rising. Goku fires the Kamehameha; Raditz dodges and tries to run from the attack, but Goku guides it after him, so Raditz stops to block the blast head-on. Goku is frustrated that Raditz was able to block the blast with no real damage, but Raditz is flustered. He decides to answer with a ki attack of his own; Goku takes a direct hit and slowly falls from the sky. From Raditz's space pod, the still-crying Gohan sees his father falling.

When Goku hits the ground, Raditz moves in to finish the job, grabbing Goku's tunic with one hand and aiming a punch with the other, but then he realizes that Piccolo's attack is ready to fire. He drops Goku to focus on Piccolo, and Piccolo promises that Raditz will be the one to die. His battle power has risen to 1,330 now, all gathered into his fingertip. Piccolo fires the attack, destroying a mountain behind RAditz, but Raditz himself managed to dodge at the last second, taking only a small amount of damage on his shoulder. Raditz is impressed that Piccolo managed to pierce his armor, acknowledging that he would have been done for if he had been hit head-on, but Piccolo knows this does not amount to anything. Raditz promises to make Piccolo pay for injuring him, and announces he is done playing; he is going to kill Piccolo now. He charges his signature energy attack, but when he goes to throw it, Goku grabs his tail.

Goku laughs at Raditz for getting careless, and squeezes his tail until he falls to the ground. Goku tells Piccolo to charge his attack again, and Piccolo happily complies, but he warns Goku that he can only use it one more time. Meanwhile, Raditz tries to guilt Goku for killing his only brother, but Goku reminds him that anyone as cruel as him cannot be his brother. He was going to kill Goku's son, after all. Raditz changes tactics, trying to convince Goku that he has had a change of heart, promising to leave the planet without causing any more trouble. Piccolo warns Goku not to listen to him; he is obviously lying. Raditz pleads with him, admitting that he has done cruel things, but he insists that he will keep this promise. Goku asks him if he really means it, and Raditz swears that he does. Piccolo panics, screaming at Goku not to release his tail, but Raditz begs one more time, and Goku releases him.

Raditz instantly drops the act, standing up and knocking Goku out with his elbow, then jumping on his chest. Piccolo curses Goku for being an idiot, and Raditz tells him that such fools are rare indeed. This confirms his previous determination that Goku is not cut out to be a warrior. Goku tells him that this was a dirty move, but Raditz explains he is a first-class warrior, unlike Goku. He will not hesitate to kill even his brother. He offers to demonstrate, again crushing Goku's chest with his foot. Gohan can hear his father screaming as Raditz continues to stomp on his chest, vowing to make him suffer before his imminent death. Raditz taunts Piccolo, asking him why he does not use that attack again, but Piccolo realizes that it is pointless if Raditz is just going to dodge it again. Gohan continues to worry about his father inside the pod.

At Mount Paozu, Chi-Chi cooks dinner, expecting Goku and Gohan to return soon. She has found one of Gohan's tests; he was supposed to show it to her when he got it back, but he did not even though he got a perfect score. Chi-Chi is happy that his eight hours of daily study are paying off; she thinks Goku will agree it is all worth it when she shows him the test score.

Back on the battlefield, Raditz stomps on Goku's chest and encourages him to scream more. He promises Piccolo that his turn is coming. Raditz asks if it is time to put Goku out of his misery, but his scouter alerts him to a danger nearby. Raditz cannot see anything, but then his space pod begins to crack. Gohan bursts out in anger, destroying the pod completely, as Raditz and Piccolo look on in shock.
