"Trouble On Arlia" is the seventh episode of FUNimation's original English dub of the Dragon Ball Z television series, first aired the weekend of 25 October 1996 on American television as distributed in syndication to local networks by Saban. This episode's production features the Vancouver-based voice cast from Ocean Studios and a replacement musical score under the responsibility of Shuki Levy.

This episode was later replaced in FUNimation's home video releases by a redub first produced in 2005 (initially for the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" home video line) featuring the Texas-based voice cast and a new replacement musical score by Nathan Johnson. This version properly covers and separates episodes 11-14 (titled "Terror On Arlia", "Global Training", "Goz and Mez", and "Princess Snake" in the revised English dub), and serves as the basis for all re-releases moving forward.

Summary

Part A

The sun rises, and creatures poke their heads above ground. Atop a tall cliff, Gohan wakes up and grabs a bowl to go get breakfast. He puts the bowl on his head and hops and slides down the cliff, then runs until he reaches a tree, which he kicks hard enough to make small nuts or fruits fall. He rushes around to catch them all as they fall, filling his bowl. As he eats, a carnivorous dinosaur approaches, drooling. Gohan greets him and suggests the dinosaur must be feeling lucky this morning. The dino tries to take a bite, and Gohan dodges and runs, taunting the dino until he runs it into a rock. Gohan jumps into the air and draws his sword, celebrating tail steak for breakfast. He falls and cuts a slice of the dino's already-shortened tail. Gohan warns the dino that he will not have a tail if he keeps this up. Gohan tells the dinosaur that he used to have a tail, too.[a] Then he uses an energy blast to start a fire on a nearby log. As he grills his steak, Piccolo watches him from above and observes that Gohan is beginning to master his training.[b]

Somewhere deep in space, the two Saiyan warriors continue their journey toward Planet Earth. Vegeta's computer speaks to him as it wakes him up from his sleep: "Prince Vegeta, we are now within one parsec of the Planet Arlia. Initiating vapor bath. Wake up, prince."[c] Vegeta speaks to Nappa over his scouter, waking him up. He tells Nappa that he thought they should stop and stretch their legs a bit.[d] Nappa thinks this sounds good; he hopes the Arlians put up a good fight; they have not had any good competition for some time.[e]

The Saiyans' pods land on Arlia. Nappa gets out first, and Vegeta asks him how it is. Nappa says it stinks. Vegeta joins him and says that the reconnaissance report gave this planet an A rating. He figures a lot can happen in three years. Nappa says, "I'm getting tired of not having any help anymore. This is ridiculous! Elite fighters doing the work of common scouts." Vegeta tells him to settle down; they cannot help it if their planet was destroyed.[f] A reading registers on Vegeta's scouter, and then two Arlians arrive, mounted on giant worm-like creatures. Vegeta says, "Well, well! It looks like the homeboys have arrived!" The Arlians tell them that they are trespassing and order them to surrender at once. Nappa starts to get angry, and Vegeta tells him to be easy.[g] One of them draws a sword, and the Saiyans notice, but do not surrender. The Arlians say they have no choice but to destroy them. They fire an energy blast, but Vegeta and Nappa are unharmed. Nappa tells them the show is over, but then Vegeta speaks telepathically to him, suggesting they surrender and have a little fun while they are here. They offer their wrists for handcuffs, and the Arlians think they will be good entertainment for the king.[1]

At Kame House, Turtle asks Master Roshi if he really thinks Goku will make it to King Kai's place in time. Roshi says that if anyone can do it, Goku can; you will not find him sleeping on the job. Turtle asks if the others have a chance to win if Goku does not make it back in time, and Roshi does not answer. Turtle says, "That bad, huh?" and Roshi answers, "I'm afraid so."[h]

On Snake Way, Goku is running when he notices an ogre driving a street sweeper. He asks the ogre if he knows the road well, and the ogre says, "What does this look like, an information booth? I'm driving a street cleaner here, buddy; I'm not paid to answer questions. I clean streets."[i] Goku asks him how far it is to King Kai's place. The ogre thinks he is either real strong or plain dumb, and he has a hunch which one. Goku does not know what he means. The ogre says if he was him, he would turn back now, but he is about a quarter of the way there. Goku says he has been running for months;[j] he will never get there at this rate. He takes a seat on the road to catch his breath. The ogre stops to ask him if he is okay. Goku says he is fine; he just needs to take a break. The ogre gets back in his street sweeper, but he offers to give Goku a ride on the back of his sweeper. Goku hops on and takes a nap.[2]

In the king's palace, warriors duel for his entertainment. The king asks Lemlia to join him, but she refuses. The Saiyans are brought to a cell. A guard tells them, "You'll be glad to know that your cell doesn't have any bugs. The prisoners ate them all." Some of the native prisoners comment on how ugly they are, and one of them says, "Maybe they think we're the ugly ones. Did you ever think of that?"[k] He tells the other prisoners that whatever their appearance, they are brothers—victims, just like them. He tells the Saiyans that they have come at a bad time; their new king is ruthless, and even stole his wife on the day they were married. Back in the throne room, the king encourages Lemlia to eat. She says she is not hungry. He tells her to leave her past behind her; she is his queen now. She tells him that some things never die.[l] In the fighting arena, a winner has been decided; the king orders the loser, Gregor, taken to the pit, and declares Esau the champion.[m] Gregor protests, but he is thrown in and then eaten by a giant beast.[1]

Part B

Gohan is chased by the sabertooth tiger as he collects nuts. When he decides he has enough for dinner, he stops, but the tiger is too exhausted to attack. Gohan tells it not to give up, but the tiger is uninterested, so Gohan taunts it with a foxtail until it chases him again.[3]

Back on Planet Arlia, the king is bored. A subject approaches and tells him that they captured two aliens. The king thinks this could make for an interesting show.[n] He orders the subject to tell the guards to bring them, but Vegeta announces they are already here. The king asks his subject why they do not have an armed escort, but the subject does not know; no orders were sent to the dungeon. Vegeta explains that the guards met with an unfortunate accident. The king tells them it will soon be their turn to meet with an unfortunate accident. He tells Lemlia that she does not have to look, but she says she is fine. He says that even he finds them repulsive. Nappa tells him, "Save it, you stupid-looking cricket thing." Vegeta chastises him.

The king says, "The one with the shiny head is passionate; it would be interesting to see how he fares against our champion in combat. I'm afraid there's not much hope for the little one." He tells Esau to give them a lesson in arena combat, and promises him he will retire a wealthy man if he can defeat both of them.[o] He tosses his handkerchief into the arena and tells them to begin. Vegeta kills Esau instantly. Nappa tells Vegeta he guesses that makes him the new champion. The king tells them that some of their warriors have mastered similar techniques using energy. Vegeta says they would like to fight them. Nappa tells them to bring on the cricket brigade.[p] They are quickly surrounded by the elite royal guard. They all fire at once, but Vegeta and Nappa are unharmed. The king orders the guards to destroy them.[1]

In the wilderness, Piccolo meditates atop a spire. He raises a tornado of loose rock around him. Meanwhile, Gohan continues to run from the sabertooth tiger. Then they spot Piccolo and his tornado, and both stop to watch. The twister eventually blows both of them away; they grab onto rocks to stop themselves. Gohan cannot believe that Piccolo caused that.[4]

Yedi's blood has been removed from Nappa's face.

Back on Arlia, Nappa powers up and destroys all of the Arlian guards with one attack. The king calls for the pit monster Yedi to be released. The pit is opened, and Yedi rises out of it. Vegeta says, "So it's the old giant under the ground trick, eh?" The king orders Yedi to destroy those men. "They're very bad men." Nappa asks Vegeta, "We're bad?" and Vegeta responds, "Well, a little."[q] Yedi attacks, and Nappa and Vegeta run, allowing Yedi to destroy the throne room. Then Nappa rips off one of his fingers and then licks his lips for no apparent reason. Then he destroys Yedi with an energy blast. The king runs, and Vegeta calls him a coward, then kills him.[r]

Lemlia's husband makes his way up to the throne room and is amazed to find the space men are the only ones left standing. Vegeta contacts his computer. The computer responds, "Yes, Prince Vegeta." He tells it to come at once, and the computer responds, "Affirmative. Initiating sequence."[s] While the pods activate, Lemlia's husband thanks Nappa and Vegeta for freeing them from centuries of bondage.[t] As they board their pods, he tells them that they will always be known as heroes among their people.

Lemlia calls out to Atla, her husband; they cannot believe they are going to be reunited. In space, Nappa feigns excitement about being their heroes. Vegeta says that heroes are not all they are cracked up to be, and Nappa laughs. Then, just as Atla and Lemlia reach each other, Vegeta destroys the planet. Nappa says, "There goes the neighborhood." Vegeta says he thinks they have made the universe a better place to live.[u] Nappa says, "You sure sent that planet to another dimension." He hopes Earth is nicer. Vegeta says now they will head to Earth for the Dragon Balls,[v] and then they will make their wish. Nappa says, "Immortality, here we come."[1]

Notes

  1. Gohan does not mention this in the original.
  2. In the original Japanese version, Piccolo characteristically understates it, saying that Gohan has gotten a little bit better.
  3. The computer only beeps in the original, and Vegeta is not identified as the Saiyan prince until Planet Namek.
  4. In the original, Vegeta notes that he had thought they might want to stop and set his wake-up timer. He also tells Nappa that Arlia is a good planet, and they can sell it for a lot.
  5. In the original, Nappa notes that sleeping for a year straight can make you out of shape.
  6. In the original, Nappa just asks Vegeta if he is sure they can sell this place for a lot, and Vegeta says it looks like they will need to inspect it more thoroughly.
  7. None of this happens in the original. The Arlians are excited to have come across space-men on their patrol and think that King Moai will be pleased. Vegeta asks who Moai is, and they explain it is the king.
  8. The conversation is completely different in the original. Roshi wonders whether Goku has arrived yet, and Turtle says that the Fortuneteller Crone told them not to wish him back for a year. Roshi says that is when the Saiyans are expected to arrive. Turtle wonders whether Goku will be able to defend the Earth. Roshi does not answer, and silence follows.
  9. In the original, Goku asks the ogre what he is doing, and the ogre explains that he was asked to clean this road by King Yama.
  10. Goku does not say this in the original. He is just surprised to hear that he is only halfway to the halfway point.
  11. In the original, the guard just tells them to behave themselves, and the prisoners do not comment on their appearance.
  12. In the original, Lemlia barely speaks.
  13. In the original, the fighters are not named.
  14. In the original, the king says that if they are cute he will keep them as pets, but when they arrive, he thinks they are too ugly. Then he prompts Lemlia for a response, but she ignores him.
  15. In the original, the king tells Vegeta he will give them anything they like if they win. He also says he wants to see what the blood of space men looks like.
  16. In the original, the king is just surprised that they won, and Vegeta reminds him of his promise; they will be taking the planet for their prize. Nappa just reiterates what Vegeta said, and then the guards surround them.
  17. In the original, Nappa just asks Vegeta if he can take this one, and Vegeta tells him to go for it.
  18. Vegeta does not call the king a coward in the original, but he does make a disdainful noise before killing him.
  19. Again, the computer does not speak in the original.
  20. In the original, no mention is made of "centuries"; it is made fairly clear that Moai has only been king for a short time.
  21. In the original, Vegeta just says that no matter the planet, they are beautiful when they are destroyed.
  22. In the original, Vegeta says that if Earth is not nicer, they will destroy it too.
  23. Paul Dobson is not credited with the rest of the voice cast. His brother Michael Dobson is credited for Nappa.
