"Cell's Standing Challenge!! The Opening to the Decisive Battle" is the one hundred and seventy-fifth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 17 February 1993, receiving a ratings share of 22.6%. It was written by Hiroshi Toda and directed by Kazuhito Kikuchi.
Synopsis
As the ten days pass by and the day of the Cell Games arrives, Mister Satan appears at the tournament grounds, where Cell waits. In front of the television broadcast staff, he tries to rile up the completely unresponsive Cell, but Vegeta then arrives. Continuing on, the repaired No. 16 arrives, followed by Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Kuririn, Trunks, as well as Tenshinhan and Yamcha, who met up with the others on the way over. Satan doesn't know any of them, and stops Goku as he is about to begin fighting, to the amazement of Gohan and the rest.
Summary
Part A
One hour before the Cell Games, Goku puts on his orange gi, as Chi-Chi and the Ox Demon King look on. Before he can go, Chi-Chi demands that Goku not allow Son Gohan to participate, but he teleports away before he can answer her. He arrives at God's Temple where he is greeted by Piccolo, Dende, Mr. Popo, Gohan, and Kuririn. Vegeta had already left for the tournament. The group at the Temple are distraught; Dende had made the balls such that they could not bring back anyone who had been brought to life before. This meant that anyone that died twice could not be brought back. Goku tells them not to worry and they should just avoid dying.
Twenty minutes before the Cell Games, Cell stands in his arena and continues waiting. A ZTV crew films from a nearby hill. No spectators arrived for the battle, but they are in remote locations all over the world watching their footage. Suddenly Mister Satan drives up in a monogrammed car. After mugging for the camera, he advances on Cell. He steps just outside the tournament stage and gives Cell a "thumbs down" signal, causing the TV reporter to go wild. While Cell stands dismissive of his new challenger, the reporter theories that Mister Satan has an edge in the battle. At Kame House, the Turtle Hermit watches the event on television while sipping tea.
Stepping onto the tournament platform, Mister Satan beckons the reports to come down from their mountain perch to get a closer look. The reporter explains his reluctance, but he knows that he will be safe since Mister Satan is there. He and his cameraman run toward the stage to interview their champion. Satan says that he feels sorry for Cell, because the monster had no idea he would face someone as powerful as he is. He accuses Cell of destroying the military using tricks and explosives. Cell remains expressionless. Satan and the reporter taunt Cell, making faces and slapping their rears. The crowd in a distant city, watching the event on live TV, goes wild, while the Turtle Hermit suggests that maybe it is better if Cell kills Mister Satan after all.
Just then, Goku and his friends (Piccolo, Trunks, Gohan, and Kuririn) fly overhead. They meet up with Yamcha and Tenshinhan who were already hovering near the tournament grounds. Tenshinhan admits that they wanted to come to the tournament, but they do not expect to fight.
Part B
Back the the Cell Games grounds, Mister Satan continues to taunt Cell while the reporter claims that his victory is a foregone conclusion. Cell turns his head, the first time he's moved since Satan and the reporters arrived. Off in the distance, he sees Vegeta arriving and is glad to see that he has become stronger since their last match. Vegeta lands and the reporter is flabbergasted to see him flying. Satan explains that the flying is a trick. The reporter tries to interview Vegeta, but he just tells him to get lost The reporter runs back to Mister Satan and declares that Vegeta is just a crazy person with unusual hair.
The reporter announces that there are only five more minutes until the Cell Games begins. He dismisses Vegeta and states that Satan will be the only challenger. Just then. Artificial Human 16 arrives, now fully repaired with a Capsule Corp logo placed over the former Red Ribbon Army one. Cell finally speaks, saying that he is surprised to see 16 here and that he is repaired. Vegeta realizes that Bulma and Dr. Brief must have been the ones to repair him, but he thinks they should have stayed out of it. Satan dismisses him as well, but just then Goku and his gang arrive. Cell is excited to see Son Goku again. Back at their house on Mount Paozu, Chi-Chi screams at the TV: Gohan is there as well. She screams at him to not fight in the tournament, nearly breaking the TV in her anger.
Mister Satan and the reporter do not know what to make of the new group, except that the "trick" of flying seems to be very popular. 16 sees the group arrive and sets off towards Goku, a stern look on his face. He arrives and smiles, thanking Kuririn for aiding him when he needed it. Goku walks over to shake 16's hand, but his attitude becomes stern again. He tells Goku that he was built to kill him, refusing to shake his hand.
In God's Temple, Dende is concentrating to observe the fight. Mr. Popo asks whether it has begun yet, but Dende says no.
Goku cracks his knuckles and asks to be the one to fight first. Trunks says that they were willing to go before him, but it was up to Goku. Even Vegeta permits Goku to go first, secure in the knowledge that he would be the one to beat Cell after Goku fails. Mister Satan is furious that they would make their own order, insisting that they don't know what they are getting into. The reporter agrees, explaining that Satan is the strongest man in the world. Satan offers to explain it to them, pulling a parge rock out of the groujnd and then crushing it over his head. Embarrassed by his ignorance, Kuririn says to let Mister Satan go first.
Suddenly Cell announces: "It is time!" The Cell Games are beginning!
