Synopsis

Presently surprised at his own power, which surpasses his perfect form, Cell recalls the events that led from his creation by Doctor Gero's computer up to the present. The ki Cell gathers is high enough to blow away the solar system, and people tremble in fear as the Earth shakes! As Gohan is overwhelmed by this power and resigns himself, through Kaio, Goku's voices reaches him from the afterlife. Encouraged by Goku, Gohan assumes the stance with just his right arm, and shoots a gigantic Kamehameha.

Summary

Part A

Cell taunts the injured Son Gohan as he prepares to launch a planet-killing kamehameha. Gohan despairs that he will be unable to save the Earth, while Mister Satan screams that it is all a trick and the ZTV reporter desperately tries to report on the scene while speaking into a piece of wood. Vegeta struggles to stand. With humility, he apologizes to Gohan for his actions. Everyone despairs that there is nothing left for them to do.

On God's Temple, Dende and Mr. Popo also feel Cell's incredible ki. Dende fears for Gohan has he has never felt a power like this. Cell's power is even felt as far away as New Planet Namek.

As Cell contemplates destroying the world, he flashes back to his own timeline. At Dr. Gero's lab, a lightning storm rips across the landscape. Gero, bleary-eyed, types into a computer as the embryonic Cell gestates in a tube nearby. An elevator descends into a lab as Artificial Human No. 17 and No. 18 check in on their creator. 17 and 18 complain that Gero does not need to keep working on his new creation as they are already capable of destroying Son Goku. No. 17 knocks some plans off of Gero's desk and opens a schematic to reveal a skeletal design. Gero scolds his creation, telling them that he is building the "ultimate" Artifical Human. No. 17 takes umbrage at being surpassed, but Gero says that will be like children compared to his new work. He threatens them his the remote control, implying that he has used it before, but No. 18 responds by knocking over some incubation tubes. Gero reaches for his remote, but No. 17 attacks him from behind and knocks his head off just as he did in the main timeline. Gero, despite appearing more outwardly human, is revealed to also be a robot. Outside, the storm continues raging. As he lays dying, Dr. Gero's head tells the pair that they will be absorbed into his ultimate Artificial Human. In response, No. 18 blasts him. Together, the pair looks into to Cell's incubator and calls him "cute". They apologize to Cell for what they are about to do, then "snip" him by destroying the lab in a pair of ki blasts. Cell's incubator survives the blast and is nurtured by Gero's computer to fruition.

Years later, Cell grows large enough that he breaks through the glass of his incubation pod. Cell emerges first in a bug form then molts, becoming Imperfect Cell. He discovered that the world had largely been destroyed by Nos. 17 and 18, but he absorbed what people that he could to gain energy. Eventually, he discovered Trunk's Time Machine and re-entered his larval form to crawl inside, using it to travel ten years into the past and to the main timeline. Once there, he absorbed No. 17 and No. 18 to become Perfect Cell. Even that form was not the true perfection that Doctor Gero searched for...

Part B

Cell's nucleus floats in space. Cell realizes that Gero's mission was not simply to defeat Son Goku, but also to find the ultimate strength from which to rule the universe. He says that the combination of Piccolo's regeneration ability, the Saiyans's ability to get stronger after being near death, and Freeza's unflinching heart made him invincible. Cell claims that Gero did not predict that he would destroy the Earth, but that Cell believes that the planet would have been destroyed anyway. As Cell laughs, Kuririn wonders: is this how the world ends? Cell claims that he will not only destroy the Earth, but the entire solar system as well. Around the world, everyone is in a panic as the earth shakes. The crowd that had watched the battle on ZTV flees in panic.

At Son Goku's home, Chi-Chi screams that the earth is shaking, but she has no idea what is going on. Her father tries to call her down. Suddenly, the Fortuneteller Crone is at the door, flying on her crystal ball. She says that she knows that Chi-Chi worried and sets her ball up on the table and casts a spell to allow them to see the Cell Games. She barks impatiently at the fortuneteller and the scene gradually comes into focus. As it does, Chi-Chi immediately sees Gohan's limp and broken arm. She faints and is caught by her father.

Cell taunts Gohan to resist his attack, but Gohan admits that it is futile. He's lost. From beyond the grave, he hears his father's voice urging him not to give up. Goku tells him that he should use a kamehameha and Gohan will be able to defeat Cell. Gohan replies that he has the use of only one arm and less than half of his ki. Goku tells his son that if he believes in his own power, that will be enough. Gohan blames himself for his father's death, but Goku reassures him that they will always be together in spirit. But, Goku says, if he needs to avenge his father then he should do so.

Gohan's attitude immediately changes and he starts a one-handed kamehameha. Cell is thrilled that he will finally have an opponent who will fight back. On God's Temple, Dende wishes his friend luck. Chi-Chi, awake again, stares into the crone's crystal ball. Cell and Gohan both fire, one after the other, with their beams colliding in the middle of the battlefield. As Gohan screams, an image of his father appears behind him, supporting his son with his own kamehameha. The narrator asks: is the image of Goku behind Gohan just an illusion, or something else?

Tidbits

The Doctor Gero of Cell's timeline.
  • This episode marks Cell's 50th appearance in Dragon Ball Z. He is the 20th named character to appear for at least 50 episodes.
  • This episode includes an extended flashback into Cell's Timeline, depicting the death of Dr. Gero. Key differences depicted in this timeline include:
    • No. 17, and No. 18 are aware of Cell's development. Dragon Ball Z Episode 150 established that the prime timeline Artificial Humans were unaware of Cell's development.[1]
    • Dr. Gero is killed in his lower laboratory rather than the upper chamber. Unlike in the prime timeline, none of the heroes are present for his death.
    • No. 16 and No. 19 are not depicted. Cell was unaware of No. 16 in the prime timeline.[2] No. 19's existence is implied as Dr. Gero has already been converted to an Artificial Human, but the brief flashback leaves his status ambiguous.
    • As of the date that Dr. Gero was killed, the Artificial Humans believed that Son Goku was still alive. He either did not die of the heart virus or Gero was unaware that he did.
    • After Cell's incubation, he emerged into a world that was nearly destroyed. None of the heroes except Future Trunks are implied to be alive, but No. 17 and No. 18 similarly appear to have been destroyed.
  • Although Gregory was present in the previous two episodes' scenes on the Serpent Road, he is absent in this one.
