Bridge Town is a fictional location in the world of Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. In the Trunks special, Bridge Town is a suburb just outside south of West City and the location of Trunks's final battle against the Artificial Humans before giving up and returning to the past in the time machine.

General Overview

Bridge Town is a suburb or satellite of West City, located only 900 meters south of the city itself. The town is located on a river canyon with houses and buildings spanning several layers, as well as bridges crossing the river at various points. It is close to where Trunks and Bulma were working on the time machine. Already by Age 783, the city was in ruins. When the Artificial Humans attacked, Trunks threw caution to the wind and raced to fight his nearby adversary. He barely escaped that battle with his life. Presumably, the city was demolished by the Artificial Humans after Trunks was defeated.[1] The main timeline version of Bridge Town is never depicted; it is possible that this city exists only in Trunks's alternate future.

Name

Bridge Town is located on a river and may have been named for the bridges crossing that river, although a specific origin has not been provided by the authors. It does not fall in line with the name pun pattern used by other towns during the Cell arc such as Ginger Town and Basil Town. Bridge Town is not named in the corresponding manga chapter or in the Funimation dub of the special.

Production

Due to the production schedule challenges inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball Z interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. The Trunks TV special was created to elaborate on Future Trunks's difficult life and to depict his struggles to become Super Saiyan and defeat the Artificial Humans. Bridge Town is the second of two named towns in the special, the other being Pepper Town.

Bridge Town is an elaboration of a single panel in Trunks's special chapter of the manga. In the original, Trunks learns of an attack by the Artificial Humans 300km to the south. The location is never named or depicted, with a panel showing Trunks rushing to face his foes followed immediately by a panel after the battle in the hospital. This event was both strengthened and elaborated on in the TV special by moving the danger closer and depicting, rather than implying, Trunk's final assault on the Artificial Humans.

Notes

  1. The corresponding dialog in the FUNimation episode dub does give a name for the town.
