Saiyan Transformations

Series Transformations

Great Ape (大猿)
User: Son Goku, Son Gohan, Vegeta, Bardock, Totapo, Toma, Pumbukin, Selypa, Broli
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 21 / Dragon Ball Episode 12

This enormous ape form is triggered by basking in the light of a full moon. By transforming into a Great Ape, one's own battle power will rise sharply by ten-fold. Only when a Saiyan's eyes absorb the sunlight bouncing off of the moon (a special light known as Bruits Waves) will their tail react and cause the transformation. This transformation only occurs when the Bruits Waves being absorbed exceed 17,000,000 Zeno, which is only possible during a full moon.[1]

Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人)
User: Son Goku, Future Trunks, Vegeta, Son Gohan, Trunks, Son Goten, Gotenks, Vegetto, Broli, Gogeta, Onio, Bardock, Cabba, Goku Black, Caulifla, Kale. Cumber
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 317 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 95

An ultimate Saiyan warrior who has exceeded Saiyan limitations. Originally, the existence of this legendary being was held in doubt amongst even the Saiyans. In reality, any Saiyan who has a high battle power beyond a certain level can become a Super Saiyan. There are several crucial elements to becoming a Super Saiyan; one must have a gentle heart, be exposed to an extreme sense of danger, be filled with a strong anger, be tormented with sorrow, and feel as if the fate of the Saiyan race itself is at risk. A Super Saiyan is embued with a golden aura and hair (which will stand on end), the sharp eyes of a hawk, and emerald green pupils. In addition to the outward change in appearance, a 50-times increase in the Saiyan's ordinary battle power is proof of the legendary strongest warrior's existence.[2]

Super Saiyan Grade II (超サイヤ人第2段階)
User: Son Goku, Trunks, Vegeta
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 377 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 155

By sending ki to focus all the nerves in their bodies, Saiyans can swell their muscles in order to power up. This form experiences an exceptional increase in power and speed compared to normal Super Saiyans.[3]

Super Saiyan Grade III (超サイヤ人第3段階)
User: Son Goku, Trunks, Caulifla
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 386 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 162

The users' muscles swell out to the maximum, enabling them to draw out tremendous power. However, it diminishes their speed as their movement grows dull from the great strain placed upon their bodies.[3]

Super Saiyan Full-Power / Super Saiyan Grade IV (超サイヤ人フルパワー / 超サイヤ人第4段階)[4][5]
User: Son Goku, Son Gohan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 390 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 168

A Saiyan who has conquered the Super Saiyan form and adopted it as their natural form by ridding themselves of the uneasy feeling associated with it.[6] By utilizing Super Saiyan Full-Power, the user is able to minimize the strain that Super Saiyan takes on their bodies.[7]

Super Saiyan 2 / Super Saiyan Grade V (超サイヤ人2 / 超サイヤ人第5段階)[8]
User: Son Goku, Son Gohan, Vegeta, Gotenks[3], Caulifla, Cabba
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 408 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 184

A form which possesses a power exceeding that of a Super Saiyan's. Though Gohan achieves this form naturally in an explosion of anger after witnessing Cell's cruel nature, Goku and Vegeta master it through relentless training.[3] This form grants twice the strength of Super Saiyan.[9]

Super Saiyan 3 (超サイヤ人3)
User: Son Goku, Gotenks, Cumber, Vegeta
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 474 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 245

The form which draws out a Saiyan's maximum inner power. However, the downside is that it exhausts massive energy, and outside of the Afterlife, the transformation cannot be maintained for any longer than just a little while.[3] This form grants four times the strength of Super Saiyan 2.[9] In Dragon Ball Daima, Vegeta attains this form[10] and refers to it as "Ultra Vegeta 1".[11]

Movie Original Transformations

Pseudo Super Saiyan (擬似超サイヤ人)
User: Son Goku
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 4

This form imitates the same full-body aura as that of a Super Saiyan, but it does not have completely golden hair. The Saiyan's eyes become fully white, as if in this state they were unconscious.[12] It seems to be the stage before Super Saiyan.[13]

Legendary Super Saiyan (伝説の超サイヤ人)
User: Broli, Kale
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 8

This is a form of Super Saiyan which has evolved differently than Goku and his friends. It closely resembles Super Saiyan Grade III, but has elite speed capabilities.[8]

Super Saiyan God (超サイヤ人ゴッド)
User: Son Goku, Vegeta
Debut: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

This form requires that six Saiyans with righteous hearts be present. To give birth to a Super Saiyan God, five of the righteous Saiyans must pour their spirits[note 1] into the sixth Saiyan. This power-up far exceeds the limitations of a Super Saiyan 3, and the user's hair turns red and his body becomes slimmer.[3]

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan / Super Saiyan Blue (超サイヤ人ゴッド超サイヤ人/超サイヤ人ブルー)
User: Son Goku, Vegeta, Vegetto, Gogeta
Debut: Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'

The level of Super Saiyan imbued with the power of Super Saiyan God.[14][15] This form can be attained on one's own, without the need of help from another Saiyan.[16] Its strength surpasses that of Super Saiyan God.[17][18] Super Saiyan Blue allows its user great strength, a serene heart, and extreme energy control.[19] Super Saiyan Blue's weakness is that its full power lasts only for a short while, but when the user keeps the energy contained in the body, this weakness can be overcome.[20]

Rage (怒り)[21]
User: Broli
Debut: Dragon Ball Super: Broly

A transformation which Paragus speculates grants the user the destructive power of a Great Ape with the speed advantage of remaining in a humanoid form. The user's irises turn yellow and their muscles swell out drastically.

Dragon Ball GT Original Transformations

Golden Great Ape (黄金大猿)
User: Son Goku, Vegeta, Baby, Cumber
Debut: Dragon Ball GT Episode 33

When a Super Saiyan basks in an amount of Bruits Waves equal to that of the full moon's, they transform into a Golden Great Ape. In this form, they lose reason and become ferocious, but are able to become a Super Saiyan 4 when they come to their senses. Goku regrows his tail and transforms into a Golden Great Ape by absorbing the Bruits Waves emitted by the sunlight reflecting off of Earth. Vegeta and Vegeta Baby unnaturally attain this form by using a Super Bruits Wave Amplifier.[22]

Super Saiyan 4 (超サイヤ人4)
User: Son Goku, Vegeta, Gogeta
Debut: Dragon Ball GT Episode 34

The ultimate form which surpasses Super Saiyan 3. After Goku regrows his tail and becomes a Golden Great Ape, he is able to regain control thanks to a speech from Pan, and turns into a Super Saiyan 4. Because of its red fur and long black hair, this form is quite different than the Super Saiyan forms before it. Vegeta is also able to become a Super Saiyan 4 by way of Bulma's Super Bruits Wave Generator.[3]

Super Saiyan 5 (超サイヤ人5)
User: N/A
Debut: N/A

A theoretical transformation mentioned in passing by Vegeta in Dragon Ball GT episode 55.[note 2]

Dragon Ball Super Original Transformations

Super Saiyan Rosé (超サイヤ人ロゼ)
User: Goku Black
Debut: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 20, Dragon Ball Super Episode 56

Goku Black's equivalent to Super Saiyan Blue.[23] In the manga, Zamasu surmises upon seeing this form that the coloring is the result of a deity surpassing Super Saiyan God in a Saiyan's body. In the anime, this is Goku Black's first Super Saiyan form. In order to align with the naming scheme of Super Saiyan Blue, Goku Black refers to this form as Super Saiyan Rosé.[24]

Super Saiyan Rage (超サイヤ人怒り)[25]

Fusion

Series Fusion Techniques

Absorption (吸収)
User: Cell, Majin Boo, Mira
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 361 / Dragon Ball Z Episode XX

A technique through which the user absorbs something specific to assume its power. This technique is first used by Cell in his first form. In this instance, Cell powers up by absorbing the bio-energy of Ginger Town's citizens. In his case, he absorbs energy through the needle-like portion at the end of his tail. This technique designation also applies to the manner in which Majin Boo absorbs, though it is quite different from Cell. Whereas Cell only gains the power of his absorbed targets, Boo is able to assume the abilities of those whom he absorbs. Boo absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, granting him Piccolo's calm mind and discerning attitude, and Gotenks' diverse array of powerful battle techniques, and even absorbs Gohan.[26] Long before the events of the series, Boo absorbed South Kaiōshin and Dai Kaiōshin.[27] Mira also uses absorption to transform. In Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2, Mira absorbs Toki Toki's egg and Towa, betraying her to transform. In Dragon Ball Heroes, Mira absorbs Towa in order to protect her from Broli.

Assimilation (同化 / 融合)[note 3]
User: Piccolo, Nail, God, Saonel, Pilina, Unnamed Universe 6 Namekians
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 295 / Dragon Ball Z Episode XX

A mysterious ability which Namekians are inherently able to perform. By assimilating with another Namekian in order to power up, the user is also able to incorporate the assimilated person's memories into their own. The users are able to decide whose body will remain post-assimilation by deciding who will be its personality. However, they will be unable to return to their original two selves again. Piccolo combines with Nail and God to defeat formidable opponents that appear one after the other.[28] In preparation for the Tournament of Power, many of Universe 6's Namekians volunteered to assimilate into Saonel and Pilina.[29]

Metamoran Fusion (フュージョン)
User: Goten, Trunks, Son Goku, Vegeta
Resulting Fusions: Gotenks, Gogeta
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 469 / Dragon Ball Z Episode XX

The Metamorans' signature technique which Goku learns from a Metamoran he meets in the Afterlife. This technique is a means by which two people only of similar power and size can merge for a maximum of 30 minutes[note 4], creating someone with their own personality and power far beyond that of the two people involved. After a successful fusion, the two users will be unable to replicate the technique for one hour.[note 4] When merging, the two partners must mirror each other in a fusion pose, which can be very embarrassing for grown-ups. Performing fusion incorrectly (as happens to Trunks and Goten twice), even just with subtle mistakes in the users' poses, can cause great physical changes, such as becoming fat or skinny, and the fused warrior will become weak instead of strong. After merging, the names of the two people involved combine (Trunks and Goten become Gotenks, for instance) and the fused warrior is clad in traditional Metamoran clothing. Goku and Vegeta first achieve Fusion in Dragon Ball Z Movie 12. At first, Vegeta refuses to perform Fusion with his rival, but after being driven into a corner by the villainous menace, Janemba, he reluctantly fuses with Goku. However, their first attempt is a failure. In the Jump Super Anime Tour 2008 animation, Goten and Trunks attempt to fuse during their battle with Aca, but after not having fused in a long time, they initially fail. With their second attempt, they successfully become Gotenks. Gotenks appears again in Battle of Gods to punish Beerus, who grows violent after being denied the chance to eat pudding, but the tables turn and Beerus spanks him. Goku and Vegeta fuse in Dragon Ball GT against Super Yi Xing Long, becoming Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Due to the form's extreme power consumption, this fusion lasts only 10 minutes.[30] The series of movements leading up to “Ha!” are important for syncing the two people up and also concentrating their minds, though it is possible for experienced practitioners to merge with just the “Ha!”[31] In Dragon Ball Super, the re-telling of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods has Beerus repeatedly whack Gotenks on the wrist.[32] Gotenks appears twice more in the series, once facing off against Ginyu in Tagoma's body,[33] and later against the threat of Copy-Vegeta.[34] Goku and Vegeta successfully fuse (after failing twice) in Dragon Ball Super: Broly to become Gogeta, though Vegeta is at first reluctant to perform such a ridiculous dance.

Potara Fusion (ポタラ)
User: Elder Kaiōshin, Old Witch, Shin, Kibito, Son Goku, Vegeta, Goku Black, Zamasu, Caulifla, Kale
Resulting Fusions: Elder Kaiōshin, Kibitoshin, Vegetto, Merged Zamasu, Kafla
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 501 / Dragon Ball Z Episode XX

A means of fusion by which two participants each take an earring from a pair of Potara, and attach them to opposite ears to merge. According to the Elder Kaiōshin, the effect of this fusion is greater than that of Metamoran Fusion.[note 5] The Elder Kaiōshin tells Goku to handle the Potara with caution, since as soon as the earrings are attached, the wearers are forcibly merged and will be unable to separate again. Unlike Metamoran Fusion, where the resulting warrior unites under traditional Metamoran dress, Potara Fusion merges not just the body, but the clothes of the two participants as well. Shin and Kibito merge accidentally, not knowing the true nature of the Potara.[35] The Elder Kaiōshin himself is a fusion, and owes his elderly appearance and mysterious abilities to an old witch who stole one of his Potara and placed it on her ear.[36] Goku Black and Zamasu use Gowasu's Potara to merge into a single being.[37] Because Goku Black is truly Zamasu in Goku's body, the resulting fusion's name is still just "Zamasu". After a period of time, half of this merged Zamasu's body becomes purple and grotesque, which Vegeta and Gowasu attribute to his mortal and immortal halves being in conflict.[38] In response, Goku and Vegeta fuse into Vegetto again, now able to use Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and referring to himself as "Vegetto Blue".[39] During the Tournament of Power, Caulifla and Kale use Fuwa's Potara to become Kafla.[40] Beerus accuses Champa of cheating, but the Omni-Kings are so impressed by Fusion that they allow it.[41]

Reversing a Potara Fusion

In the original series, Vegetto splits back into Son Goku and Vegeta after taking down his barrier, leading Goku to assume that the reversed fusion must be due to the awful air inside Majin Boo.[42][43][note 6] In Dragon Ball Super, Gowasu specifies that the fusion permanence applies only to Kaiōshin, and that mortals who fuse with the Potara will separate after one hour.[44][45] Porunga holds the power to reverse a Kaiōshin fusion via a wish.[46] Dragon Ball Daima establishes early on that Majin Boo can explicitly be used to dispel a fusion, resulting in Shin and Kibito returning to their original selves.[47]

Animation Original Fusion Techniques

Merging (合体)
User: Avo, Cado
Debut: Dragon Ball: Heya! Son Goku and Friends Return!!

NOTE: According to the Chozenshu, this is Avo and Cado's technique specifically. But because this one is just a vague "Gattai", I may move this one around and include stuff like Oob, and the Universe 3 guys from Super when I begin researching.

Merged Artificial Human (合体人造人間)
User: Artificial Human No. 13, Artificial Human No. 17
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 7

The form of an Artificial Human who has merged with one or more Artificial Humans. In Dragon Ball Z Movie 7, after Artificial Humans No. 14 and 15 are defeated, Artificial Human No. 13 absorbs their battle data, computer chips, and energy reactors, transforming himself into Merged No. 13. In addition to experiencing a tremendous power-up, he becomes gigantic and his hair stands on end.[48] In Dragon Ball GT, Super No. 17 is born when Artificial Human No. 17 and New No. 17 merge. Together, thanks to Dr. Mu's M2 technology combined with Dr. Gero's Artificial Human technology, they become the most powerful Artificial Human in history.[49] As a consequence of their union, Super No. 17 becomes taller and more muscular, and his villainous personality resembles that of the newer No. 17.[50]

Other Transformations

Series Transformations

Body Change (ボディチェンジ)
User: Ginyu
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 286 / Dragon Ball Z Episode XX

By shouting "Change!!", the user fires a dazzling light from their entire body towards their opponent. The light-covered oppoent is drawn into the user's body through the mouth, exchanging bodies. So that the user can then switch consciousnesses, they invade the opponent through the mouth with a ball of their own consciousness, and obtain their body. It takes a little while for the two to become familiar with their new bodies, during which they will be unable to freely control their power. In his Namekian frog form, Ginyu shouts using an animal translator, changing bodies with Bulma. It is seemingly useless to just shout "Change" in frog language.[51] After Freeza's resurrection on Earth, Ginyu is able to switch bodies with Tagoma by having Tagoma read aloud the word "change" while facing him.[52]

Form Transformation (形態変化)
User: Cell
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 372 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 152

An ability unique to the artificial lifeform Cell, which was manufactured by Dr. Gero's computer. Every form change Cell undergoes results in a power-up. By absorbing the artificial human No. 17, Cell changes into his second form, and absorbing No. 18 results in his completed "perfect" form. Though his first form appears quite insect-like, Cell's second and third forms have a humanoid appearance due to No. 17 and 18's influence. In his completed form, Cell becomes the perfect warrior in every aspect, such as speed and strength.[53]

Super-Giant Form Technique (超巨身術)
User: Piccolo, Slug
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 186 / Dragon Ball Episode 145

A technique possessed by members of the Namekian race, in which the user concentrates all of his nerves to activate all of the cells in his body. The excessive strain caused by becoming huge causes the user to let out a cry of pain. This technique excels in its capacity to leave the user's speed unaffected, despite its enormous size. This form's offensive capabilities are great, but because the opponent is relatively tiny, it can be difficult to make physical contact.[54]

Super Neko Majin (スーパーネコマジン)
User: Neko Majin Z
Debut: Neko Majin Z 1

A strengthening-technique of Neko Majin[55], which Z learns by imitation after seeing Onio transform into a Super Saiyan. As such, its attributes are similar to Super Saiyan: glowing hair which stands on end and increased battle power.[3]

Transformation Ability (変身能力)
User: Zarbon, Freeza, Kureeza, etc.
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 263 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 53

The potential to purposefully transform oneself. For transformation-type aliens, their ability and number of transformations differ from species-to-species. In Zarbon's case, he can transform only once; from his usual beautiful form to an unimaginably unattractive monster with a power-up. For Freeza, he can transform up to a fourth form, and his final form holds an unexpected power for such a petite figure. Kureeza transforms to look like Freeza's final form with a pointed head.[56] Neko Majin Z grows double-eyelids.[57]

Anime Original Transformations

Pupa Metamorphosis (変身のためにサナギになる)
User: Caterpi
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Episode 196

By constructing a cocoon and becoming a pupa, Caterpi is able to transform into his ultimate form. However, it takes him 1,200 years to emerge from his cocoon.[56]

Movie Original Transformations

Fourth Transformation (第4変身)
User: Coola
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 5

Since Coola is usually in the same state as Freeza after his third transformation, this transformation is the fourth in that line. When transformed, his eyes become red, and four angular protrusions appear on his head. His skin becomes armor-like in appearance, and something resembling a protective mask fits over his mouth. His body also becomes gigantic, and his offensive and defensive powers seem to increase.[58]

Gigantification (巨大化)
User: Garlic Jr., Gashew, Vinegar
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 1

While under Planet Makyō's influence, this form powers up the user's potential power and skill together by dozens of times. In Dragon Ball Z Movie 1, Garlic Jr.'s Gigantification is possible even in situations outside of Planet Makyō's effect, and seems to be Garlic Jr.'s own ability.[26] In the Dragon Ball Heroes series of games, this technique terminology also applies to characters outside of the Demon Clan who grow giant.

Gigantification by Culture Fluid Absorption (培養液吸収巨大化)
User: Bio-Broli
Debut: Dragon Ball Z Movie 11

After absorbing the culture fluid used to create Bio-Warriors, Bio-Broli becomes gigantic and powers-up. This form's weakness is that its culture fluid makeup becomes petrified when it makes contact with seawater.[59]

Golden Freeza (ゴールデンフリーザ)
User: Freeza, Coola
Debut: Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'

To defeat Son Goku and his friends, Freeza trained hard and mastered this golden form in just four months.[60] Coola, Freeza's brother, likewise has his own version of this transformation titled "Golden Coola" (ゴールデンクウラ), featured in Super Dragon Ball Heroes[61] and various video games.

Super Yi Xing Long (超一星龍)
User: Yi Xing Long
Debut: Dragon Ball GT Episode 58

By absorbing all seven Dragon Balls, Yi Xing Long transforms and the horns on his body become huge.[63] In this form, he experiences a ten-times power-up, becomes able to use the techniques of each of the other evil dragons, and wields the condensed Minus Energy of all of the Dragon Balls in a Power Ball.[64]

Dragon Ball Super Original Transformations

User: Son Goku
Debut: Dragon Ball Super Episode 110

The initial stage of Ultra Instinct known as "Sign" before approaching its final form with silver hair.[67] After experimenting with combining Ultra Instinct's technique and different levels of Super Saiyan transformations, Son Goku falls back on this transformation level in conjunction with letting his emotions run wild, creating a fighting style very unlike that of what had previously been seen from Ultra Instinct.[68]

Ultra Instinct (身勝手の極意)
User: Son Goku, Angels, Moro
Debut: Dragon Ball Super Episode 130

The ultimate difficult-to-master form that allows the user to evade any attack by trusting their body to move unconsciously.[67] While Son Goku must reach this silver-haired transformation in order to use the highest level of this technique, Angels are always in an Ultra Instinct state of awareness,[69] and its most proficient user is the Grand Priest.[70]

After learning Destruction power from Beerus, Vegeta unlocks a body driven by fighting instinct with no upper limit.[67]

Black Freeza (ブラックフリーザ)
User: Freeza

A form obtained by Freeza after training for approximately ten years in a dimension isolated from the rest of the universe. With this power, he destroys Gas in a single blow.[60]

The Heatas

Dragon Ball-Enhanced (ドラゴンボールで強化された状態)
User: Gas
Debut: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 78

Losing his initial childlike appearance after using Planet Cereal's Dragon Balls, Gas trades his lifespan for the greatest strength in the universe. He then engages in a fight to the death with Granolla, who had also obtained the greatest strength in the universe.[60]

Instincts Unleashed (本能の解放状態)
User: Gas, Macki, Oil

Notes

  1. The term used in Chōzenshū 4 when describing the "Super Saiyan God" transformation is ki (気), whereas in the film version of Battle of Gods the term used is "light" (光 hikari). In the film version, Piccolo tells Goku after his initial transformation attempt that his power only rose because the others poured their "energy" (エネルギー enerugii) into him, followed by Whis pointing out that they also need a sixth person. In Dragon Ball Super episode 9, after the first failed attempt, Whis corrects both errors at once, telling them that they need to pour their hearts/spirits (心 kokoro) into a sixth person rather than their ki.
  2. In the original Japanese version of Dragon Ball GT, after Bulma hints at being able to surpass Super Saiyan 4, Vegeta proclaims "Kakarrot, bring on your Super Saiyan 4, or 5, or whatever you want!" In the FUNimation English dub of Dragon Ball GT, it is Bulma instead who first explicitly mentions the form, "After that, you might even reach Super Saiyan 5!"
  3. Chōzenshū 4 uses 融合 (Yūgō, meaning "Fusion") to refer to this technique. However, Nail and Piccolo never use this wording in Dragon Ball chapter 295, instead referring to the way Namekians can merge as 同化 (Dōka, meaning "Assimilation"). Beginning with Dragon Ball chapter 356, God and Piccolo refer to this technique as 融合. 融合 is also used inside the descriptions of other fusion entries to explicitly refer to "fusion", with either the furigana reading of yūgō or fyūjon.
  4. 4.0 4.1 Chōzenshū 4's entry on "Fusion" inexplicably neglects to mention the two important elements of the technique: its time limit and cool-down period, both of which are explicitly stated in the series. The time limit is explained by Son Goku in Dragon Ball Chapter 472, and Gotenks specifies the cool-down period in Dragon Ball Chapter 495.
  5. Chōzenshū 4 refers to the Potara Fusion having a "power" exceeding that of Metamoran Fusion, but in the story the Elder Kaiōshin says, "And what’s more, the effect is greater than with Fusion!"
  6. Prior to the airing of Dragon Ball Daima episode 1, Boo being the root cause of Vegetto's split is always presented as in-universe speculation, in both Dragon Ball chapter 506 and Dragon Ball Super chapter 15.
