Gowasu is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Gowasu makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 53, broadcast on 31 July 2016 on Fuji TV, as the Kaiōshin of Universe 10.

Biography

Gowasu is a naïve Kaiōshin who likes tea. He meets Son Goku when his disciple Zamasu is up to no good, and he enjoys watching GodTube.[1]

Tournament of Power

Gowasu's character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Gowasu is in attendance along with the God of Destruction Rumoosh, his Angel Kusu.[2]

After the exhibition match is concluded, Cae hosts a video call meeting of all the Kaiōshin from the Universe 11 Kaiōshin Realm. He asks them all to keep the news about the Tournament of Power secret from the inhabitants of their universes. Gowasu agrees that this is a good idea, but he wonders where Shin is. Cae explains that he excluded Shin because the tournament was Universe 7's idea. Rou says that Cae is wasting their time; he is busy trying to find more fighters for the tournament, and he leaves the call. Huwa yawns ostentatiously, and Peru admonishes him. The tournament sounds fun, and he is sure that Universe 2 will survive. Ea disagrees; Universe 3 has intellect. Peru says that only battle power matters. Ea says he cannot stand musclebound idiots. Peru and Ea continue to bicker, and Cae asks them to calm down. Kur finds their display pathetic.

Cae proposes that they ask the Omni-Kings to reconsider the tournament; surely if they tell him their consensus opinion, he will give them a reprieve until they can raise their mortal levels above 7. Ea and Peru think this is foolish; the Omni-Kings have already decided. Kur warns that if the suggestion displeases the Omni-Kings, they could all be erased on the spot. Kur says that he is busy, Huwa yawns again, and Gowasu says he agrees with Kur. The Kaiōshin all leave the call.[3]

Later, Gowasu is distressed because he does not know how to find fighters for the tournament. He worries after the Zamasu incident that his instincts are bad. Rumoosh tells him he is overthinking it; Gowasu feels he has no choice, but Rumoosh advises to think with the body rather than the mind. Gowasu does not understand, but then Kusu introduces the muscle-men Rumoosh has chosen, starting with Mulithim, the only non-hooded warrior. Gowasu reluctantly concedes and tells Mulithim he is counting on them. Looking at a pocketwatch, Mulithim tells everyone it is time for their protein drinks. They all drink, and Mulithim explains that this is necessary for keeping a brawny body.[4] Kusu then leads the team members in a dance to foster unity. Gowasu records it for GodTube, hoping it will get a lot of views.[5]

Name

Gowasu (ごわす) is an archaic Japanese verb meaning "to be", often used to show gratitude, respect, and humbleness toward another speaker. As Gowasu was introduced prior to the Tournament of Power and shares a similar naming scheme as Zamasu, his name does not follow suit with the other Kaiōshin names.[6]

Performance

Gowasu is voiced by Tetsuo Gotō, who had previously voiced a secretary in Dragon Ball Super Episode 15. In the FUNimation dub, Gowasu is voiced by Garrett Schenck in his first role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
