Kusu is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kusu makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Angel of Universe 10.

Biography

Kusu is the oldest child of the Great Priest.[1] An innocent angel who looks like a young girl despite her age, she is enchanted by the sharp muscular condition of the representative warriors for Universe 10.[2] She is always advising Rumoosh and Gowasu on the difference between good and evil, but clashes between good and evil get her blood racing despite herself.[3]

Tournament of Power

Kusu leads the Universe 10 team in a dance.[4]

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Kusu is in attendance along with her God of Destruction Rumoosh and Gowasu, the Kaiōshin of Universe 10.[5]

After the Zen Exhibition Match, Gowasu is distressed because he does not know how to find fighters for the tournament. He worries after the Zamasu incident that his instincts are bad. Rumoosh tells him he is overthinking it; Gowasu feels he has no choice, but Rumoosh advises to think with the body rather than the mind. Gowasu does not understand, but then Kusu introduces the muscle-men Rumoosh has chosen, starting with Mulithim, the only non-hooded warrior. Gowasu reluctantly concedes and tells Mulithim he is counting on them. Looking at a pocketwatch, Mulithim tells everyone it is time for their protein drinks. They all drink, and Mulithim explains that this is necessary for keeping a brawny body.[6] Later, Kusu leads the team members in a dance to foster unity. Gowasu records it for GodTube, hoping it will get a lot of views.[4]

Name

Kusu's name is likely derived from Kūsu (くうす/Kūsu). When Awamori, a distilled beverage unique to Okinawa, is aged for three years or more, it is called kūsu (古酒; "old liquor"), often written in katakana (クース) or in kanji with the appropriate furigana. This pronunciation is unique to Awamori and Okinawa; elsewhere in Japan, the word 古酒 is pronounced koshu and refers to aged sake. The character name simply drops the vowel elongation. This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[7]

Performance

Kusu is voiced by Hiromi Kon'no in her first role for the Dragon Ball franchise. In the Funimation dub, Kusu is voiced by Brittney Karbowski, also in her first role for the franchise.
