Kur is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kur makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Kaiōshin of Universe 4.

Biography

Kur is haughty and mindful of his position as a god.[1] He speaks with the old-fashioned expression ~Ojaru (an archaic, honorific form of "to be").[2]

Zen Exhibition Match

Kur's character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Kur is in attendance along with the God of Destruction Quitela and his Angel Conic.[3]

Recruitment

After the exhibition match is concluded, Cae hosts a video call meeting of all the Kaiōshin from the Universe 11 Kaiōshin Realm. He asks them all to keep the news about the Tournament of Power secret from the inhabitants of their universes. Gowasu agrees that this is a good idea, but he wonders where Shin is. Cae explains that he excluded Shin because the tournament was Universe 7's idea. Rou says that Cae is wasting their time; he is busy trying to find more fighters for the tournament, and he leaves the call. Huwa yawns ostentatiously, and Peru admonishes him. The tournament sounds fun, and he is sure that Universe 2 will survive. Ea disagrees; Universe 3 has intellect. Peru says that only battle power matters. Ea says he cannot stand musclebound idiots. Peru and Ea continue to bicker, and Cae asks them to calm down. Kur finds their display pathetic.

Cae proposes that they ask the Omni-Kings to reconsider the tournament; surely if they tell him their consensus opinion, he will give them a reprieve until they can raise their mortal levels above 7. Ea and Peru think this is foolish; the Omni-Kings have already decided. Kur warns that if the suggestion displeases the Omni-Kings, they could all be erased on the spot. Kur says that he is busy, Huwa yawns again, and Gowasu says he agrees with Kur. The Kaiōshin all leave the call.[4]

Quitela sends spies to all the universes. In Universe 7, Ganos spies on Goku and gang at Capsule Corporation while they discuss resurrecting Freeza to fight on their team. Ganos reports their plans to Quitela, who thinks Beerus must be desperate to be recruiting a dead man. Ganos says he is strong and could pose a problem for them. Kur is distressed to learn that Quitela has sent spies to other universes; what if the Omni-Kings were to find out? Quitela tells him to relax; there is no rule against it. He asks Ganos what this dead guy is called; Ganos tells him his name is Freeza. Ganos again warns against underestimating Universe 7. Kur asks Quitela what they can do to counter them; as it happens, Quitela has just thought of a great plan. He prays Beerus forgive him, but Beerus has to go.[5]

Quitela contacts Sidra with a crystal ball and tells him that Universe 7 plans to go after Universe 9 first in the Tournament of Power. This angers Sidra, so Quitela tells him about Freeza and suggests that if they take him out before he can join the team, it will cause Universe 7 to be disqualified. Sidra worries that the Omni-Kings will find out; Quitela says they only have to avoid getting directly involved, and suggests Sidra use hitmen from his universe. Quitela says he will see Sidra at the Tournament of Power, sans Universe 7. Quitela asks Kur if he is satisfied, and Kur is impressed with Quitela's scheme, though he wonders if Sidra will actually do it. Quitela is sure he will.[6]

Tournament of Power

Name

Kur's name pun is unknown, but many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and Kur (クル/Kuru)—an underworld dragon in Sumerian mythology who stole a goddess and carried her away to the nether world—is a likely source for his name.[7]

Performance

Kur is voiced by Tomomichi Nishimura who also voices Biarra of Universe 3 in the Tournament of Power. In the FUNimation dub, Kur is voiced by Justin Briner who previously voiced several minor, partially credited roles in Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
