Cae is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Cae makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Kaiōshin of Universe 11.

Biography

Cae is a gentle Kaiōshin with a strong sense of justice who values life.[1][2] He is known for being kind-hearted and taking everything positively.[3]

Zen Exhibition Match

Cae's character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Cae is in attendance along with the God of Destruction Vermoud, his Angel Markarita, and Toppo. When Goku speaks casually to the Omni-Kings, calling them "Zen-chan", Cae worries that Universe 7 might have offended them.[4]

During the match between Basil of Universe 9 and Majin Boo of Universe 7, Cae asks Toppo to deal with one of Basil's energy attacks that Boo has deflected toward their podium. Toppo nullifies the energy and complains about the fighters' lack of respect for the gods.[5] In the second match, when Son Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, which the Great Priest explains to the Omni-Kings, Cae takes an interest, and Toppo observes that Gohan is a being that can alter his battle power.

When the second match ends, Cae and the other gods learn that losing universes will be erased in the Tournament of Power.[6] Bergamo of Universe 9 asks the Omni-Kings to reconsider their plans if he wins his match against Goku, and the Omni-Kings agree. Cae asks Toppo what he thinks of Goku, and Vermoud thinks that Goku is not the kind of person that Toppo would tolerate, but Toppo wishes to reserve judgment until after he has seen Goku fight to the fullest. The third match begins, and when Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue, Cae immediately recognizes the pressure of divine power, and Vermoud is agape.

After the third match concludes, the Great Priest takes a moment to explain the rules of the Tournament of Power. On hearing that the Tournament of Power will be a melee, Cae finds the whole situation intolerable. Toppo excuses himself to his gods and jumps down to the ring. Toppo apologizes for being discourteous and begs forgiveness as he removes his cloak, telling Goku that he would like to speak to him. Toppo introduces himself as the Warrior of Freedom, leader of the Pride Troopers and protector of Universe 11, and challenges Goku to a fight. He proclaims that if Goku has evil intent, then Toppo's fist will be his ruin.

Vermoud is impressed with Toppo's sense of justice, but his Markarita wonders whether it is correct to call Goku evil. Cae tells Vermoud that they should view this fight as an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of their universe and show that they will be the ones to survive the Tournament of Power, and Vermoud agrees. Cae asks the Omni-Kings to forgive their rudeness. He introduces himself and explains that he gained an admiration for Goku through his performance in the match with Bergamo, and asks the Omni-Kings to allow Toppo, who has accompanied him as his bodyguard, to fight Goku. He and Vermoud both bow. The Great Priest asks the Omni-Kings whether they will allow the fight, and they are happy to oblige.

During the fight, Toppo grabs Goku in a hold from behind, which Vermoud names the Justice Rear Naked Choke. Cae says it is Toppo's ultimate finishing hold, and Markarita says that he will not let go until all of his opponents bones are broken. She recommends that they surrender, and Whis recommends in turn that she stop saying "desu masu yo" at the end of all her sentences. ("Noble sirs" in the English dub.) The gods all watch stoically as Goku screams, and Toppo announces that it is time to end this. Vermoud cheers him on, telling him to crush Goku, but Goku breaks free from the hold. When the fight heats up, the Great Priest calls it off, telling them to save it for the Tournament of Power. Cae congratulates Toppo for a job well done, and Toppo apologizes for being unable to defeat Goku, but Vermoud assures him that his fights are always entertaining. Toppo thanks him, and Vermoud asks if he thinks he can beat Goku at the Tournament of Power. Toppo says he is not sure, but if he fails, there is always Jiren. Justice will never yield.[7][8]

Tournament of Power

After the Zen Exhibition Match, Cae hosts a video call meeting of all the Kaiōshin from the Universe 11 Kaiōshin Realm. He asks them all to keep the news about the Tournament of Power secret from the inhabitants of their universes. Gowasu agrees that this is a good idea, but he wonders where Shin is. Cae explains that he excluded Shin because the tournament was Universe 7's idea. Rou says that Cae is wasting their time; he is busy trying to find more fighters for the tournament, and he leaves the call. Huwa yawns ostentatiously, and Peru admonishes him. The tournament sounds fun, and he is sure that Universe 2 will survive. Ea disagrees; Universe 3 has intellect. Peru says that only battle power matters. Ea says he cannot stand musclebound idiots. Peru and Ea continue to bicker, and Cae asks them to calm down. Kur finds display pathetic.

Cae proposes that they ask the Omni-Kings to reconsider the tournament; surely if they tell him their consensus opinion, he will give them a reprieve until they can raise their mortal levels above 7. Ea and Peru think this is foolish; the Omni-Kings have already decided. Kur warns that if the suggestion displeases the Omni-Kings, they could all be erased on the spot. Kur says that he is busy, Huwa yawns again, and Gowasu says he agrees with Kur. The Kaiōshin all leave the call. Cae laments the lost opportunity to save all the universes, but he is confident in Universe 11's chances to survive. They have the strongest warriors, after all.[9]

Name

Cae's name likely comes from the 界 (kai) in "Kaiōshin" meaning "world".[2] Additionally, many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and Caenus (カイネウス/Kaineusu) of Greek mythology is a possible source for this name, or one of any number of gods whose names begin with "Kai" or "Cae".[10]

Performance

Cae is voiced by Taishi Murata, who also voices Arak, the God of Destruction of Universe Five. In the FUNimation dub, Cae is voiced by Aaron Roberts in his first major role for the franchise. Roberts also voices several minor roles throughout Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
