Toppo is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Toppo makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV as a mysterious cloaked companion to the gods of Universe 11.
Biography
Toppo is the leader of the hero team "Pride Troopers", the guardians of peace in Universe 11. A hot-blooded and gigantic warrior of Justice, he is so strong that he has even been scouted as a candidate for the next God of Destruction of his universe.[2]
Zen Exhibition Match

Toppo is the only mortal present at the Zen Exhibition Match aside from those from Universe 7 and Universe 9, the competing universes. Toppo remains hooded until the matches are complete, but he is identified by name during the first match between Basil of Universe 9 and Majin Boo of Universe 7. Cae, the Kaiōshin of Universe 11, asks Toppo to deal with one of Basil's energy attacks that Boo has deflected toward their podium. Toppo nullifies the energy and complains about the fighters' lack of respect for the gods. This feat impresses Champa, the God of Destruction of Universe 6, and his Angel Vados surmises that Toppo must be a warrior from Universe 11.[3] In the second match, when Son Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, which the Great Priest explains to the Omni-Kings, Cae takes an interest, and Toppo observes that Gohan is a being that can alter his battle power.[4]
Before his fight with Son Goku, Bergamo of Universe 9 attempts to convince the gods that Goku is evil. Cae asks Toppo for his thoughts, and Vermoud, the God of Destruction of Universe 11, muses that Toppo must find Goku unforgivable, but Toppo says that he will observe Goku when he is taking things seriously before he makes a judgement. After Goku has defeated Bergamo, and the Great Priest has explained the rules of the upcoming tournament, Toppo descends to the fighting stage to challenge Goku. He apologizes to the gods for being disrespectful and removes his cloak, introducing himself to Goku, with characteristic fighting poses, as the leader of the Pride Troopers and the "Warrior of Freedom". He challenges Goku to a duel, promising that if Goku has evil intent, Toppo will defeat him. Goku happily accepts the challenge, as his fight with Bergamo was not enough to sate him. Toppo says his only desire is to slay evil, and Goku seems to be amused by the notion that he is evil.[5]
Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe Seven, asks who Toppo is, and his Angel Whis says that he appears to be a self-appointed hero of justice. Vermoud is impressed with Toppo's sense of justice, but his Angel Markarita wonders whether it is correct to call Goku evil. Cae tells Vermoud that they should view this fight as an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of their universe and show that they will be the ones to survive the Tournament of Power, and Vermoud agrees. Cae asks the Omni-Kings to forgive their rudeness. He introduces himself and explains that he gained an admiration for Goku through his performance in the match with Bergamo, and asks the Omni-Kings to allow Toppo, who has accompanied him as his bodyguard, to fight Goku. He and Vermoud both bow. The Great Priest asks the Omni-Kings whether they will allow the fight, and they are happy to oblige. The Great Priest announces their decision and tells Toppo and Goku to fight to their hearts' content.
Acknowledging their permission, Goku begins by transforming into a Super Saiyan, and he tells Toppo that he is ready for him. Toppo pronounces that he will eliminate Goku for having brought danger upon all the universes. Goku mocks him for continuing to talk after telling Goku to shut up earlier. As they stare each other down, Beerus worries that Goku is giving the other universes an opportunity to study his fighting style, but Whis points out they will be able to study Toppo as well. Mister Satan cheers Goku on, reminding him that big muscle guys are always weak, but Gohan disagrees. He tells Satan that Toppo is pretty strong. As Toppo begins to power up, Goku says that he has goosebumps, Toppo is so intimidating. He thanks Toppo for giving him the excitement he has been waiting for, but Toppo says he has no need for gratitude from an evildoer. Gohan says that even his Saiyan blood is pumping for this fight, and Beerus complains that both of them are a bothersome.
Toppo poses and introduces himself formally again as the leader of the Pride Troopers, proclaiming his love for his people, land, world, and universe. His iron fists of justice (正義/seigi) will crush all manner of evil. Beerus complains that Toppo is setting them up as the bad guys, and Whis dryly responds that being a hero of justice is hard work. Gohan thinks he is cool. Toppo announces that he is coming for Goku, and attacks. He immediately gets behind Goku's defenses, standing on his shoulders and using Justice Tornado to spin Goku around in the air. Goku breaks free, but Toppo attacks again, bending Goku's arm back with Justice Crusher. (These attacks use the English term, ジャスティス/jasutisu.) Whis notes that Toppo is more nimble than his physique would suggest, and Beerus agrees; he effortlessly dislocated Goku's shoulder. Beerus thinks he might specialize in joint lock techniques. Goku flips around, though, kicking Toppo in the face and breaking free. He pops his shoulder back in place with a grimace, laughing as he assumes a stance again. Toppo says he will tolerate no laughter from evildoers, and promises that justice will be served. The gods chatter loudly amongst themselves, and the Omni-Kings take up the "Justice!" (ジャスティス) chant. Shin laments that the crowd seems to favor Universe 11.
Goku announces that it is his turn and powers up, attacking Toppo hand-to-hand. He tells Toppo that he will not allow any more of those joint lock techniques, and Toppo tells him that instead he can try out the Justice Flash technique, shooting rapid-fire blasts from his fingertips. He chases Goku around the ring, telling him that evil will not escape the light of justice (正義). Goku meets Toppo's final blast with one of his own, and as he is catching his breath, Toppo grabs him in a hold from behind, which Vermoud names the Justice Rear Naked Choke. Cae says it is Toppo's ultimate finishing hold, and Markarita says that he will not let go until all of his opponents bones are broken. She recommends that they surrender, and Whis recommends in turn that she stop saying "desu masu yo" at the end of all her sentences. ("Noble sirs" in the English dub.)
Goku continues to scream under Toppo's chokehold, and Satan cannot watch anymore, thinking about Goku's bones. Goku loses his Super Saiyan transformation, and Toppo tells him to sink into the abyss. Evildoers must die! Toppo proclaims that Goku is doomed because evil does not stand a chance against justice. Beerus cannot believe that Universe 11 was harboring someone so strong. He demands to know if Gohan understands what will happen if Goku loses, and Gohan says he knows. Beerus backs off, his anger deflated, and Gohan smiles. The gods all watch stoically as Goku screams, and Toppo announces that it is time to end this. Vermoud cheers him on, telling him to crush Goku, but Gohan smiles again. Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue, breaking free. Toppo is shocked that Goku had any strength left. He tries to attack Goku again, but he cannot land a hit. Goku lands a punch on his face, though, and a few successive hits besides. Beerus is thrilled, and Gohan says it is no less than he expected.
Toppo says that justice will never yield, and the fight continues with rapid hand-to-hand that the Omni-Kings can barely follow. Goku charges a Kamehameha, and Toppo responds with Justice Flash, but Goku teleports out of the way of harm, reappearing at point-blank range, where he releases the Kamehameha. Beerus wonders whether Goku has killed Toppo, and Whis thinks Goku got a little too serious. The gods of Universe 11 are peeved, and the Omni-Kings are entertained. When the dust clears, Toppo is still standing, and Goku chuckles. Toppo is angry that Goku has damaged his bespoke Pride Trooper uniform; only Pride Troopers are allowed to wear them, and Goku has therefore damaged their pride. Toppo powers up further, promising to teach Goku a lesson in true justice. Goku tells him to bring it on, as he taps into the power of Kaiō-ken, offering to give Toppo a taste of power beyond his limits.
The Great Priest notices that the Omni-Kings are shaking with excitement, and he grows concerned. He tells Toppo and Goku, "That is enough!" Toppo and Goku release their excess power in confusion, and the Omni-Kings complain that they wanted to see Goku break his limits. The Great Priest explains that this fight could end in someone's death, and that would ruin the Tournament of Power. He suggests the Omni-Kings save this kind of fight for the main event. They ask him if the tournament will be even more exciting, and he assures them that it will be. They consider, and then announce their decision: the Zen Exhibition Match is concluded.
Goku complains that it was just getting interesting, and Shin tells him not to talk back to the Omni-Kings. Goku accepts their decision, releasing his Super Saiyan Blue transformation. He approaches Toppo, telling him he was surprised to encounter someone so strong, and now he is really looking forward to the tournament. He offers his hand, suggesting they fight all out at the tournament. Toppo shuns the offering, turning his back to Goku. He says he will not take the hand of an enemy. Goku is confused, but Toppo goes on to say that, though he hates to bring joy to an evil person, he feels he should tell Goku that he is not the strongest fighter in Universe 11. That would be Jiren the Gray, his sworn ally. If Goku and Toppo are evenly matched, then Goku has no hope of beating Jiren. Goku returns to the Universe 7 platform, where Gohan congratulates him on his fight, and Goku tells them what Toppo said about Jiren. Gohan notes that Universe 11 sure seems like the universe to watch out for, and Beerus is annoyed. Goku cannot wait for the tournament, but Beerus lashes out, telling him all excitement is forbidden until after the tournament. Cae congratulates Toppo for a job well done, and Toppo apologizes for being unable to defeat Goku, but Vermoud assures him that his fights are always entertaining. Toppo thanks him, and Vermoud asks if he thinks he can beat Goku at the Tournament of Power. Toppo says he is not sure, but if he fails, there is always Jiren. Justice will never yield.[6]
Recruitment
Back home in Universe 11, Toppo lands his spaceship on a tower, where he is greeted with respect by an air traffic controller. He visits a jazz lounge inside the building, and broods about Goku over a color-shifting drink and hors d'œuvres. Casserale asks him what is the matter, and Toppo is surprised to realize the General was sitting next to him. Casserale tells him that he is a leader and he should be putting on a better face for the people who look up to him. His grim face will only frighten them. Toppo vaguely tells Casserale that the future of those people rests on their shoulders. Casserale is alarmed. He knows that Toppo went to see the Omni-Kings with Vermoud, and he asks Toppo to tell him what happened there, but just then, Toppo receives an urgent distress signal on his wristwatch.
Toppo and Casserale take off at full speed for Planet Dardon, which is under attack by a space monster. The Dorakiyans have decided to claim Planet Dardon. One of their number is using the monster Araghne to terrorize the planet. The Pride Trooper Dispo fights them alone, and the Dorakiyan controlling Araghne says he wants to destroy the Pride Troopers, too. Dispo is eventually captured by Araghne, and just as he is about to be eaten, he is rescued by Toppo and Casserale. The three of them introduce themselves formally with special poses and proclaim that they will now defeat evil. Toppo attacks Araghne with kicks and then with Justice Flash. Casserale and Dispo team up with kicks and a Double Cannon Maximum, disabling Araghne. The Dorakiyan cannot believe Araghne was defeated, but then Toppo appears behind him, telling him that they have zero tolerance for his actions, picks him up and tosses him into Araghne's gaping maw. Toppo destroys them both with fire and proclaims that as long as the Pride Troopers around, the light of freedom will never disappear.
On the flight home, Toppo tells the others about the Tournament of Power and its consequences, and both are sobered by the news. Toppo tells them he wants to summon Pride Troopers from other planets, and Dispo says they will need Jiren for this. Toppo agrees, and says that Jiren is currently training.[7]
Later, in the Pride Trooper jazz lounge, Dispo asks Toppo where Casserale is; Toppo has been trying to call him but has not been getting an answer. He uses his wristwatch to tell Casserale again that he is issuing an emergency order to return. Casserale is trying to save a cat that is trapped on a pipe near a live electrical wire, while two small children look at him hopefully. He tells Toppo that he has an important duty he must complete before he can return. Dispo reminds him that the fate of the universe is at stake, but Casserale says that if he cannot save the life in front of him, he cannot save the universe either. He then ends the call, and Dispo cannot believe he hung up on them, but Toppo is sure Casserale has his reasons.[8]
Eventually, Casserale rescues the cat. Toppo arrives, and the children are excited to see him in person. He pats them on the head and congratulates Casserale on his good work. They take an elevator back to headquarters, and Casserale apologizes for making Toppo come to him. Casserale wonders what will happen to the people of Universe 11 while they are away. Back in the jazz lounge, Toppo says they should use the Pride Troopers trainees to watch over the universe for an hour. He thinks it will be good training for them. Casserale worries what will happen if an incident occurs during that hour, but Toppo reassures him. The other Pride Troopers who are participating are training for the tournament on Planet Netfiss. Toppo begs Casserale to participate as well, and he agrees.[9]
Tournament of Power
Name
Toppo's name is likely an anagram of the katakana transliteration of "pot" (ポット/potto). The -to syllable is unvoiced in potto, but the -po syllable in Toppo is voiced. Therefore "Toppo" is an accurate representation of the Japanese pronunciation, but the FUNimation spelling "Top" might be considered a better representation of the name source. This name pun follows the theme of the Pride Troopers being named after items found in a kitchen.
Production
An interview with Dragon Ball Super producer Sakoru Takami and director Ryōta Nakamura published near the end of the anime's broadcast run clarified some long-lingering questions about Toppo's development during the production process:[1]
Were Universe 11‘s Pride Troopers part of Toriyama-sensei‘s designs?
Nakamura: They weren’t in his designs, but since Jiren and co. all wore the same red and black suits, he allowed us to flesh it out like that.
Takami: In sensei‘s initial rough draft, there was no information indicating Jiren’s personality. Since the tough opponents in Dragon Ball Super up until then had been nihilistic, cool characters like Hit or Zamasu, we thought it might be best to make Jiren very talkative, so we came up with the background of him being a hero of justice. Jiren was central to this squadron of heroes.
Nakamura: When we suggested that to Toriyama-sensei, he replied that “Jiren is a character who doesn’t speak.” It was then that Toriyama-sensei sent us the backstory that his parents and martial arts master had been killed. He said that Jiren was this type of character, in contrast to Hit or Zamasu.
Takami: And so the characterization of Jiren that we originally came up with was passed on to Toppo.
It was interesting how Toppo became a God of Destruction despite talking about justice all the time.
Nakamura: Toriyama-sensei‘s background for Toppo included that he was a candidate for God of Destruction, so we fleshed that out a bit. We wondered what to do with Dyspo, but then once Bin Shimada was cast, he naturally took shape as a cocky character. With the concept for those three settled, we came up with the other members to match up with them.

Early events of the Universe Survival arc had already suggested to fans that there was some late indecision regarding the roles of Toppo and Jiren during the Zen Exhibition Match. The arc's first animated trailer premiered following the broadcast of Dragon Ball Super Episode 75,[11] and an extended version was posted on Toei Animation's official YouTube account a week later.[10] In these promotional trailers, the hooded figure standing with the gods of Universe 11 is much thinner than Toppo, and Jiren's distinctive nose seems to be visible in the hood opening.
This leaked Animage summary for Episode 82 served to complete a partial reveal of Jiren's name seen in a Super Dragon Ball Heroes livecast stream capture,[12] but the reference to Jiren in the advertisement was an error:
As Goku and Jiren battle, the Great Priest stops their fight and tells them to settle things at the "Tournament of Power". The "Tournament of Power" will be set up as a battle royale where 80 warriors from 8 universes all battle at once, and lose if they fall from the stage. Losing means having your universe destroyed, and the tournament begins in just 40 hours.[13]
Episode 81 had already aired, so it was quickly deduced that the summary should have instead named Toppo, who had been present at the Zen Exhibition Match since Episode 78.
Toriyama's instructions regarding Toppo's candidacy as a God of Destruction were reflected in the character's first online biography,[2] but this detail was removed when Toei ported the character profiles to their new website,[14] even though it had already been confirmed in Toyotarō's manga.[15] Toppo was introduced in the anime merely as Cae's bodyguard and the leader of the Pride Troopers, and it was not revealed that he was a candidate for God of Destruction until he began to use those powers near the end of the tournament.[16]
Performance
Toppo is voiced by Kenji Nomura in his first role for the Dragon Ball franchise. In the FUNimation dub, Toppo is voiced by Ray Hurd who previously voiced several minor roles in Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
