Ribrianne is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Ribrianne makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 91, broadcast on 21 May 2017 on Fuji TV, as a contestant to compete in the Tournament of Power on behalf of Universe 2.

Overview

Ribrianne commands Kakunsa and Roasie as leader of the Maiden Squadron. She transforms from a beautiful girl into a chubby warrior, and attacks recklessly.[1] In the manga continuity, she does not transform; she is always "Ribrianne". The Maiden Squadron transformations were the brainchild of the Toei Animation writers.[2]

Name

Ribrianne's name is likely derived from Chateaubriand (シャトーブリアン) steak, a French dish made with a thick cut of beef tenderloin filet. The character name is a rearrangement of the katakana used to write "Chateaubriand" in Japanese, with the inclusion of the French word "de", meaning "of" or "from". The steak dish is named for François-René de Chateaubriand, whose surname comes from the French town of the same name.[3] The addition of the "ri" syllable to the beginning of her warrior name adds "rib" (リブ/ribu) to her name pun.

Her civilian name is "Brianne" in both the Toei and Simmons subtitles, but when her full name is given, Simmons spells it "Briand de Chateau". When she transforms right after, he translates her chant: "Brianne! Brianne! Bri-brianne!" Simmons was probably trying to convey the "Chateaubriand" pun clearly in the first instance of her name, though it causes a redundancy for the "de" syllable and a conflict with "Brianne" in the transformation sequence.

Tournament of Power

Brianne de Chateau attends an event to be chosen as a Universe 2 idol warrior for the Tournament of Power. She cuts to the front of the line, and two female-presenting warriors with masculine traits (chin stubble, low voices) who are at the front of the line think that Brianne has mistaken this event for a regular idol audition. They inform her that this is an audition for a martial arts tournament.

Ribrianne's character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

Offended by their rudeness, Brianne informs them that she is stronger than they are. She calls out, "Formation!" and begins her transformation, chanting: "Burian. Burian. Buri-buri-an!" Each part of her body grows larger until she has fully transformed into Ribrianne. She tells the rude ladies it is time for their punishment, and proceeds to attack them with a Pretty Cannon. They hug each other in fear, but the attack hits them, and they appear to be obliterated.[4] (They are seen later, watching the Tournament of Power on a telecast and noticeably injured.)[5] Ribrianne tells the children watching not to try this at home. The Omni-Kings, watching through a crystal ball, are very impressed with her, and the Great Priest tells him they should pay attention to the strong women in each universe, too.[4]

Brianne is next seen when the Great Priest transports the Universe 2 team to the World of Void.[6] When the tournament begins, Narirama of Universe 3 goes into his Super Survival Mode and knocks Brianne and the other members of the Maiden Squadron flying. Helles is offended; it is not beautiful to attack the maidens before they transform.[7] After this, Brianne lays low and is seen only briefly, while Kale is on her berserker rampage,[8] before Kale and Caulifla team up with Universe 7 warriors to eliminate half of the Pride Troopers of Universe 11. Brianne observes their fight,[9] and when it is finished, she decides it is time for the Maiden Squadron to transform.[10]

Ribrianne's anime design in the April 2017 issue of V-Jump. "Mysterious warriors!! New rivals who appear in the latest series opening. Which universes could these warriors be from?!"[11]

Brianne calls for Sanka-Ku and Sous-Roas, telling them it is time to show their power. Then she calls for the attention of the other warriors, and Jimizu, Zirloin, Bikal, Rabanra, and Zarbuto stop what they are doing to attend her. (It is unknown why the other Universe 2 fighters, Prum and Harmira, did not join them.) As Sanka and Sous join Brianne on a high rock, Goku, who was looking for Jiren, stops to see what is happening. They also have the attention of Kuririn, who is in the stands. Brianne asks the girls if they are ready, and they are; Sanka approves of the high ground for their performance. Peru roots in anticipation, and Helles stands to announce that it is time for lovely flowers to bloom on the battlefield. Beerus and Champa wonder what is going on. Vegeta asks them what this is all about.

Brianne introduces herself, followed by Sanka and Sous, and their Universe 2 teammates join them in a call-and-response ritual. "Let it bloom. Let it ring. The song of love and victory!"/"The song of love and victory!" Brianne calls "Formation!" and begins her transformation sequence as seen at her audition. Before the actual transformation begins, Sanka and Sous begin their sequences as well. Goku wonders if they are going to power up, but Beerus thinks it looks more like a recital than powering up. Helles tells him to be silent; this ritual represents the fighting spirit of the Universe 2 warriors. The maidens all drift, eyes closed, as they gather their power, and the Omni-Kings are enthralled, but then suddenly they are interrupted by a blast from No. 17. Peru is horrified; Helles demands to know who has done this. Goku asks No. 17 if he did it; No. 17 says they were wide open, and asks if there is a problem. Goku explains that they were going to transform.

The disheveled maidens rush in to angrily confront No. 17; Brianne tells him that every part of their transformation has meaning; how could he interrupt it? Toppo chimes in to support the maidens; a warrior's pose is justice, and No. 17's interruption was disrespectful. Goku pleads with No. 17 to allow them to transform, so he concedes and walks away. Brianne thanks Toppo for his understanding, but warns him that they will not hold back. Toppo says that is fine, and Goku tells them to show their full power. No. 17 takes a seat on a rock to watch, and the girls jump back up on their high rock. Beerus is frustrated with Goku; he is supposed to eliminate enemies before they reach full power. Kuririn says that is just how Goku is.

The Maiden Squadron transformation is interrupted by No. 17.[10]

Helles announces the ritual again, and Beerus and Champa cannot believe they are starting over from the beginning. Everything is repeated exactly as it was before, except that this time they successfully transform into Ribrianne, Kakunsa, and Roasie. Helles proclaims that this is the highest form of Universe 2's warriors; their mortal level might not be high enough, but their love level is the highest in all the universes. The Omni-Kings, the participating Universe 2 members, and Peru all celebrate; Peru thinks they are beautiful, but Kuririn thinks they were cuter before. Whis explains that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and each universe is different; indeed, the male Universe 10 warriors on the sidelines are enjoying the spectacle, and from Universe 11, Tupper, Zoire, Toppo, and Dispo are blushing. Goku adopts a battle stance, and Vegeta demands to see their power.

Ribrianne starts off with an attack called Love; all three maidens contribute, and they send hearts crashing all around the arena; Goku sniffs the air, and Freeza thinks the odor is foul. Obni is overcome by emotions, and Toppo warns Dispo not to inhale. Helles explains that this is the light of love; warriors bewitched by its aroma will burn. Rumoosh frantically tries to smack his warriors in the stands out of their stupor; only Rylibeu seems unaffected. Shin wonders whether Goku and the others will be okay, but Whis says they are all stoic and they seem to be holding up, even the Turtle Hermit, who was the one they would have had to worry about the most. Muten Rōshi says that his training with Pu'er is paying off, and Tenshinhan is proud of him. The Universe 7 defensive group scatters to fight independently.

Ribrianne asks everyone how they like their gifts of love; the entire arena is covered in the fog of the Love attack. Beerus thinks Universe 2 was hiding a real nuisance; Champa says that, despite their bizarre appearances, they have shaken up the entire tournament. Helles declares that this is the point. Jiren moves in to put an end to the attack, but Vegeta beats him to the punch, startling Ribrianne with a blast and forcing her to dodge. Ribrianne floats down unharmed, but the fog has been dispelled. Vegeta tells Ribrianne that this is a stupid attack; surely this is not their full power. Ribrianne assures him that this was just a little greeting; the real fight starts now.

Ribrianne attacks Vegeta as a Ball of Fire.[10]

Vegeta attacks Ribrianne as a Super Saiyan, and after they exchange blows, he concedes that her transformation was not just for show. She attacks him as a Ball of Fire, and he instinctively dodges because he is repulsed by her appearance. Instead, she barrels into Dyrasen, who had been fighting Piccolo, and knocks him out of the arena. Ribrianne celebrates her first victory; the Omni-Kings think she is amazing. Helles asks everyone if they saw the maiden's explosion, and calls everyone's attention to Roasie, who is fighting Goku, and Kakunsa, who is fighting No. 17. Bikal saves Kakunsa from elimination, but then No. 17 knocks Bikal out of the ring. Ribrianne steps in to help Kakunsa, but Kakunsa wants to take care of No. 17 herself. Ribrianne is moved by Kakunsa's love for Bikal, and wishes her luck. When No. 17 eliminates Kakunsa, Ribrianne becomes enraged. Not only did he interrupt their transformation, he eliminated Bikal and Kakunsa. With eyes of fire, she tells No. 17 that she will never forgive him. Behold a maiden's anger![10]

Kakunsa apologizes to Ribrianne for losing, but Ribrianne directs all of her anger to No. 17, whom she calls a "Warrior of Darkness". She demands he identify himself, so he does, promising to eliminate her for the sake of Universe 7. She says she will not let him; as long as she has love, she will protect Universe 2. No. 17 says they will have to see which is stronger: his wish, or her love. She tells him to bring it on, promising him she will show him her power. They fight evenly, and No. 17 compliments her strength, but she says she does not need compliments from a Warrior of Darkness. As Roasie fights Goku, Helles proclaims that a maiden's revenge is also beautiful.

No. 17 briefly abandons Ribrianne to help Goku with Roasie, and this angers Ribrianne even more. He apologizes as they continue to fight. When Goku defeats Roasie, Ribrianne abandons No. 17 to prevent her from being eliminated; No. 17 tells them that if they would simply eliminate themselves, it would save them a lot of trouble. Helles panics, but Peru tells her not to worry; maidens have knights! Jimizu appears and uses his teleportation technique to help them retreat. He later eliminates Zircor to protect them, promising that no one shall harm the hopes of Universe 2, and assuring them that love and hope will never die.[12]

When Ribrianne recovers, she challenges Goku.[13] Fighting her in his normal form, he compliments her fighting spirit. She tells him it's not fighting spirit; it's love! She promises to defeat Universe 7 with the power of love. Helles is awed by her display; Peru tells Ribrianne that Helles is watching her, but Ribrianne already knows; she promises Helles that she will not lose, and fires a Pretty Cannon at Goku, followed by a Pretty Love Machine Gun. Kuririn is worried that Goku is getting confused by her love attacks; Goku rubs his arms, complaining that something tickles. Il, the Kaiōshin of Universe 8, is impressed by her love level. Liquir says he thought that either Universe 6 or 7 would win, since they have the numbers, but he thinks Universe 2 might make it to the end. Il asks him if he is rooting for Ribrianne, and he admits he might be. Meanwhile, the other exempt universes are stone-faced. Goku seems surprised that his attacks are not working on Ribrianne; she informs him that love is eternal and always wins![14]

Ribrianne continues to attack Goku with her "maiden's charge", invoking love, dreams, hope, friendship, and victory. Goku blocks her attacks, eventually knocking her back, and he acknowledges her amazing power. She proclaims that she has to win and obtain the Super Dragon Balls, and Helles chimes in to encourage her, assuring her that she will reach her goal. Ribrianne says it is all for love, and Helles says her objective is beautiful. Ribrianne ascends to the top of a high rock, proclaiming that her wish is to be a goddess of love, worshipped in all the universes. Goku thinks that is interesting, so Ribrianne asks him what he will wish for; Goku does not know, but thinks maybe he would wish to meet someone stronger than he has ever met before. Ribrianne informs him that he has already met that person; she is that strong someone!

Ribrianne transforms into Super Ribrianne.[15]

Helles raises a glowstick and instructs Kakunsa and Roasie to do the same. They wave their glowsticks and send Ribrianne their love; Ribrianne absorbs it and wraps herself up in a cocoon; she emerges from the cocoon with wings, and calls herself Super Ribrianne. Goku says he can feel that she has gotten stronger; he will have to use more power to keep up. Helles compliments Ribrianne's new form and tells her to show these loveless universes the power of love. Ribrianne attacks Goku with Heart Arrows of Love which produce a "Ribrianne Super Amore Shower". Goku dodges her attacks, and she tells him it is not beautiful to run. Now she calls her attack "Love Storm Arrows"; Goku gets a hit in and she squeals. She thinks Goku fears her love; she warns him that her love envelopes all; she will pierce him with Ribrianne Eternal Love, another giant heart attack. She is satisfied at her heart-shaped crater and proclaims that love is victorious, but Goku attacks her from behind as a Super Saiyan Blue, sending her crashing through several rocks.

Helles is distressed; Ribrianne rolls on the ground and lands at Jiren's feet. She squeals again, and runs to hide behind a rock, asking Jiren if he has fallen in love with her, too, but he ignores her. She asks him if he is shy; if he confesses his love later, she will ignore him. But Jiren is focused on Goku, whose transformation has caught his attention. Ribrianne takes the hint, though she seems to be frightened of Jiren. Later, when Goku is gathering energy for the Genki-Dama, Ribrianne tries to "send him some sudden love" from behind, but Vegeta blasts her before she can attack.[15] Vegeta continues to keep an eye on her while Goku is trying to throw the Genki-Dama at Jiren. When it seems Goku has been defeated by his own attack, Ribrianne and several others approach the crater where he fell to challenge Jiren. When Jiren defeats Goku, Ribrianne again approaches the crater where Goku fell to challenge him again, but Goku is taken away by Freeza.[16]

Ribrianne challenges Jiren after the apparent defeat of Son Goku.[16]

Vegeta battles Ribrianne again, this time in his normal form. She tries attacking as a Ball of Fire again, but he tells her that will not work. Ribrianne is on the ropes, and Roasie steps in to protect her. Infuriated, Vegeta attacks them both with rapid fire blasts, but they escape, hiding underneath a rock, and Vegeta goes off to search for them. Ribrianne worriedly asks Roasie if they can win this; Universe 2 is losing more members than other universes. Roasie slaps her, asking her if this is the extent of her love and reminding her that love is stronger and bigger than everything. Ribrianne wipes away her tears, and says Roasie is right; if she cannot believe in love, then who can? She gives Roasie her thanks.[17]

When Goku is exhausted after defeating Kafla, fights break out all over the arena, and Ribrianne and Roasie are eager to join in. Helles speaks to them telepathically, telling them she has a secret strategy for Universe 2. Elsewhere, No. 17 and No. 18 observe Roasie balancing atop Ribrianne's Ball of Fire technique, headed toward Goku. They are joined by Zirloin, Rabanra, and Zarbuto. Goku remarks that they are ganging up on him, but Ribrianne tells him that love is always a surprise attack. Helles tells them to put the exhausted man out of his misery, and Sanka cheers them on. Beerus objects; that is unfair! But Helles knows they must do whatever it takes to eliminate Goku.

Ribrianne and Roasie decide it is time to show Goku their love. They jump on on a rock and begin the ritual; the men join them, posing and praising the maidens' beauty. Ribrianne and Roasie attack with a Love Symphony, but their attack is interrupted by a combination blast from Nos. 17 and 18, cheered by Kuririn. Goku thanks them for coming to his rescue. Ribrianne chides them; they were trying to send Goku their love! But Nos. 17 and 18 cannot allow Goku to be eliminated. Roasie is frustrated, but Ribrianne reminds her that love always has obstacles, and true love can overcome them all. They will send their love to the interlopers instead. She tells the men to watch Goku and make sure that he does not escape; he is hers to defeat. Roasie asks Ribrianne if she can have No. 17 to avenge Kakunsa, and Ribrianne agrees.

They attack, Ribrianne with a Love Machine Gun aimed at No. 18. The Turtle Hermit is impressed by the Universe 2 ladies and believes they will not go down easily. While Roasie fights No. 17, Ribrianne pellets No. 18 with rapid-fire love and quickly grows frustrated with her agility. No. 18 kicks Ribrianne in the face with her injured leg, sending Ribrianne flying into a rock and caving in her face. Ribrianne shakes it off, telling No. 18 to stop running and fight her; this is not exciting. No. 18 says she is not here to fight; she is here to win. She is married and has a daughter; she has a lot at stake. Kuririn cheers No. 18 from the benches; Ribrianne is irritated, and then she realizes that this is No. 18's husband. Ribrianne says he is not beautiful; he does not have a nose. Ribrianne says their objective of sending love to all universes is greater than silly things like wanting to fight for that baldy. No. 18 angrily informs her that she is about to lose to that silly person.

Enraged, Ribrianne tells No. 18 that for her to lose would be blasphemy against love; she will deliver the diving hammer of justice. No. 18 tells her to stop talking and start fighting; she says she does not need No. 18 to tell her that; she attacks, and No. 18 dodges, so Ribrianne flies straight into a rock. She gets herself unstuck and attacks with a Ball of Fire. No. 18 trips on her bad ankle, but No. 17 is there to save her. Roasie tries to attack No. 17 with a Yacchaina Hidden Technique Heavy Light Shatter Burst, but No. 17 dodges and she hits Ribrianne instead. Roasie apologies profusely, but then Nos. 17 and 18 go on the attack again. No. 18 promises to take Ribrianne down, but Ribrianne says she will not lose.

No. 18 uses Ribrianne to propel herself into the air; Ribrianne believes she cannot dodge up there, and aims a Max Love Cannon at her. Kuririn shouts at No. 18 to warn her, but she uses a blast to change her position so that Ribrianne hits Roasie instead. Ribrianne tries to go help Roasie, and No. 18 blasts her. Roasie tries to aim an attack at No. 18, but she doesn't notice No. 17 coming up behind her. He eliminates her, and Brianne falls to the ground exhausted, having lost her transformation, but she insists it is not over yet. She has a duty to send love to all universes. No. 18 asks what she is going to do now that she has powered down, and Brianne says she will show her; she aims a blast at No. 18, easily dodged. But Ribrianne has caught her with an underground attack. She calls it Big Amour; No. 18 gets wrapped up in a big flower shaped like a heart. She is trapped, and No. 17 is stuck fighting Biarra. Brianne explains that great love is binding, and she will not escape now. Sanka calls on everyone to use their glowsticks to give Ribrianne love. Brianne absorbs it, letting it envelop her body, and then she transforms into a giant Super Ribrianne with wings, towering over the entire arena. Helles wonders how anyone so beautiful can exist.

Ribrianne explains that as long as love exists, she can fight. Love will save the universe. She says to No. 18, "evil begone!", attacking her with a Fist of Love. No. 18 thinks she is finished, but in her head, she hears Kuririn's voice calling to her repeatedly in scenes of home life with Marron. Then she realizes he is desperately calling for her from the sidelines. Ribrianne asks her if she has given up, but she powers up, breaking free from Big Amour. When the Fist of Love hits, No. 18 meets it with her own fist. Ribrianne does not understand how someone without love could have such strength, but No. 18 tells her to figure it out. She cracks Ribrianne's giant fist and runs up her arm. Ribrianne tries to grab her but cannot. She aims a blast at No. 18, but No. 17, having finished his fight with Biarra, shows up just in time to repel it. He apologizes to No. 18 for being late. No. 18 jumps towards Ribrianne's other fist, cracking it, dodging eye blasts, and meeting a mouth blast head-on, propelling herself through Ribrianne's forehead, punching all the way through.

Brianne falls from the arena and then appears in the benches in tears. The other maidens rush to comfort her, but Peru is proud of her, and Helles tells her she fought well. Shin says that it was the power of love; No. 18's love for Kuririn was her Big Amour, and he is jealous of their love. No. 18 slices his face with a blast, and tells him she will kill him. He apologizes for getting carried away. Brianne sees No. 18 smiling at Kuririn, and a tear falls from her eye. She acknowledges with a smile that there might be a love out there that they don't yet understand, and the other maidens agree.[18]

Back in Universe 2, the female-presenting warriors from Brianne's audition—one with her arm in a sling, the other with a bandage on her face—are watching the tournament in a large crowd where people are wearing t-shirts featuring their favorite members of the team, including Ribrianne. They are distressed that their goddess Ribrianne has fallen, and worry that their universe is finished. Brianne assures them that it is not over yet, and they call out to her. The Elder Kaiōshin and Whis are surprised that Universe 2 was so bold as to broadcast the tournament back home, when normally it would cause mass hysteria. Brianne tells them that even though she was defeated, the light of love has not yet been lost, and she encourages everyone to cheer on the remaining warriors all the way to the end.

Zirloin, Rabanra, and Zarbuto surround Goku, while Brianne rallies the Universe 2 people to raise their glowsticks in support. The warriors absorb the love of their universe, and Brianne tells the men to recite the incantation of love. The men mimic the transformation ritual of the Maiden Squadron; Zirloin transforms in the aspect of Ribrianne, Rabanra as Kakunsa, and Zarbuto as Roasie. Helles pronounces a miracle; here, a new beauty has been born. Nos. 17 and 18 join Goku, and the fight begins. Goku faces off against Zirloin, and he observes that Zirloin has actually taken on Ribrianne's power. Zirloin explains that this is the power of love. Zirloin attacks Goku with a Pretty Cannon, and a Ball of Fire. Eventually, they create a Pretty Black Hole, an attack that not even the Maiden Squadron could handle. Under its weight, Goku finally gets the "power of love", but he powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and dispels the attack with a Kamehameha.

The last Universe 2 members are eliminated, and the Great Priest announces that they will be erased. Peru congratulates the men for a job well done, and back home, the inhabitants of Universe 2 wave their glowsticks. Helles tells them to accept their fate gracefully and beautifully. Brianne calls "Formation!", and as Ribrianne, she thanks everyone for cheering them on. Kakunsa tells them that even if Universe 2 is erased, their love will live on inside of them. Roasie tells them to finish it off with the usual: Love! Ribrianne tells everyone "Bye-Bye!", and they all disappear. No. 18 is amazed they were like that until the end, and thinks that after everything, they were cool.[5]

When No. 17 uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore all of the destroyed universes, Brianne is seen with Helles, Peru, and the rest of the team back at home in Universe 2.[19]

Production

Toriyama's drawing of Ribrianne for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 36.[20]

Ribrianne was introduced in a preview of the "Limit-Break x Survivor" opening theme animation, initially presented after the Japanese broadcast of Dragon Ball Super episode 75 on 22 January 2017.[21][22] In the preview, which features additional frames of animation not present in the final broadcast version of the opening theme, Ribrianne is seen fighting Vegeta.

According to Dragon Ball Super producer Satoru Takami, Ribrianne's warrior form was designed by Akira Toriyama. The magical girl–style transformation was a concept developed at Toei Animation.[2]

Universe 2 Ribrianne's fat appearance from after she transforms was also designed by Toriyama-sensei. We took that and added in the idea that a cute girl would transform into that fat person.
— Satoru Takami

Director Ryōta Nakamura elaborated on the development of Ribrianne's character and her battle with No. 18.[2]

[Ribrianne’s battle of love] was another one of our ideas. Frankly, Ribrianne is someone who singlemindedly shouts about ideals. I thought 18 made a good counterweight, as a grounded individual and a mother. I wanted that battle to show the difference between ideals and reality.
— Ryōta Nakamura

Toriyama's design for Ribrianne has not been made public, but he made significant corrections to Toyotarō's depiction of her grand entrance in the manga version of the Tournament of Power.[20]

Performance

Ribrianne is voiced by Rina Kitagawa in her first credited role for the franchise. In the FUNimation dub, Ribrianne is voiced by Veronica Taylor, who also voices Beriblu in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
