"Universe Survival! The Tournament of Power Begins!" is the thirty-third chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the April 2018 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 February 2018.

Summary

Universe 7's Tournament of Power team arrives in the World of Void alongside teams from other universes. Vegeta and Gohan figure that their ability to fly will be an advantage, but as Whis correctly deduces, Goku is unable to fly when he tries to do so. This restriction is only on the competitors (as both Beerus and Whis are able to fly), and does not affect winged creatures from other universes; the gravity has also been independently adjusted according to each universe.

Champa and his team from Universe 6 arrive with Magetta already in tears from Caulifla's insults. Goku greets Hit, who has assumed that the tournament is a result of Goku's actions, and swears not to lose again. Cabba explains to Caulifla who these Saiyans are, including Vegeta, who taught him to become a Super Saiyan. Freeza and Frost exchange pleasantries, agreeing to team up.

Goku and Vegeta look toward Universe 11, assuming one of the warriors must be Jiren. Goku wanders over to say hello to Toppo and introduce himself to Jiren, who immediately dismisses Goku. Taking a look at their competition, Vermoud figures that everyone is far beneath their own Jiren.

The Great Priest greets all of the teams and introduces the two Omni-Kings, as Beerus and Shin take their seats and demand that their universe's team works together. Champa and Beerus take swipes at each other's teams, while Piccolo, Gohan, and the others are confused over a universe that appears to only have eight fighters.

The Great Priest explains the rules: the fight will last 100 taks (about 48 minutes in Earth time), the central pillar will descend as time passes (the fight is over when it reaches the bottom), no weapons are allowed, killing is forbidden, and the objective is to knock opponents out of the ring (who will then be warped into the stands).

The tournament begins, and as Gohan begins to prime everyone for teamwork, Goku, Vegeta, Freeza, No. 17, and No. 18 all rush out in different directions on their own. Right off the bat, No. 17 eliminates Murisam, Freeza eliminates Rubalt, No. 18 eliminates Prum and Jimizu, and Vegeta eliminates Catopesra and Nink. Goku is rushed by the majority of the Pride Troopers from Universe 11 all at once. Goku is forced to turn Super Saiyan and knocks them away, setting his own sights directly on Jiren.

As all of the fighters continue to clash, Freeza stops to speak with Frost, offering him a tip that the bald fighters on his own team should pose no problem and could be knocked out quickly. Frost questions Freeza's motives since reducing his team's numbers could result in a loss, but Freeza says he is only concerned with revenge on the Saiyans. Frost agrees to play along.

Continuity

In the anime, the Omni-Kings have a luxurious mini-palace to watch the matches from.

In the manga, the Omni-Kings' seats are much less luxurious.

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • In the manga, all teams arrive at the tournament stage holding hands. In the anime, Whis also tells the Universe 7 team to hold hands, but after arriving at the World of Void, Beerus notices that the other teams have all been transported just fine without any hand-holding. Whis then admits that it was just a way to build team unity (Beerus immediately retorts that it nearly broke the team apart).
  • In the manga, Tenshinhan, No. 17 and No. 18 complain about not being able to use Bukūjutsu in the tournament. The Turtle Hermit then scolds them for being bothered by such a trifling thing. Tenshinhan praises the old master for remaining calm in an adverse situation, but Kuririn clarifies that it is just because the Turtle Hermit never learned how to fly in the first place (the Turtle Hermit then threatens to make Kuririn start his training all the way over from the beginning, starting with the milk runs).
  • In the manga, Caulifla calls Magetta a “hunk of junk” either shortly before or during the trip to the tournament stage (which immediately hurts the Metal Man’s fragile sensibilities).
  • In the anime, Goku tries to greet Caulifla, but she immediately blows him off, stating that she is there to find out who is the strongest across all universes, not to make friends. In the manga, however, Caulifla notices the Universe 7 Saiyans but never actually interacts with them.
  • In the anime, the two Omni-Kings watch the matches from a luxurious mini-palace covered by a see-through dome. In the manga, however, despite having luxurious thrones very similar to the ones shown in the anime, they watch the matches from a much smaller and simpler platform, which, unlike the one from the television series, is also not covered by any dome.
  • In the manga, some of the participants (namely the ones from Universe 2), are very surprised to see that the Omni-King is so small (and that there are two of them).
  • In the anime, and just like Whis predicted, the Great Priest specifies that the use of restorative items is forbidden. In the manga, however, he never makes that clarification.
  • In the anime, Freeza never informs Frost about the “weak links” of the Universe 7 team. Nevertheless, Kuririn and Tenshinhan are still the first casualties of Universe 7. However, they do not lose as quickly as in the manga and even manage to defeat some fighters before losing themselves. In the anime, Frost is still ultimately the one that throws Kuririn out of bounds, but Tenshinhan is defeated by Hamira, instead.
    • In the anime, Freeza also pretends to team up with Frost, but in that version, their target is not Kuririn and Tenshinhan, but Gohan, instead. However, Freeza never actually lets Gohan lose and takes advantage of a moment when Frost is off-guard to throw him out of bounds instead. Frost is so angry at this betrayal that he tries to attack Freeza from the bench. Noticing this, one of the Omni-Kings immediately erases Frost and threatens to do the same to the entirety of the Universe 6 team should this ever happen again (in the manga, Frost never tries to kill Freeza and stays on the bench until the eventual loss and erasure of Universe 6).

Notes

  • Throughout the entirety of the Tournament of Power, there are barely any similarities between the numerous fights of the manga and the anime.
  • This chapter marked the beginning of Caleb Cook's English translation for Viz.[1]

This chapter has been released in numerous countries and languages around the world in both print and digital formats. Viz simulpub chapters and the collected volumes (including the Japanese, print and digital) are inconsistently cropped from the original, wider V-Jump pages. Viz digital editions (simulpub and tankōbon) are often the least-cropped.
