Dium is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Dium makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 90, broadcast on 14 May 2017 on Fuji TV, as a member of the Universe 10 team.

Biography

Dium is able to fly freely through the sky like a bird. In the Tournament of Power, he is thrown off-balance and knocked out of the ring, his wings cut by Kuririn's Kienzan.[1][2]

Tournament of Power

Dium's anime character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

Dium is recruited for the Tournament of Power by Rumoosh, the God of Destruction of Universe 10. As the leader of the team, Mulithim introduces the otherwise-hooded members including Dium to his Kaiōshin Gowasu, demonstrating their dedication to a regular protein intake in order to build strength.[3]

The Angel Kusu leads the team in a dance to foster team unity, while Gowasu records. He plans to upload it as a video entitled "Us Dancing" on GodTube, and hopes it will get a lot of views.[4]

The team is next seen when they are transported to the World of Void by the Great Priest. When Whis explains to the Universe 7 team that they will not be able to fly, and Goku verifies that he cannot, No. 17 notices Dium and his teammate Rylibeu flying.[5] The Great Priest later explains that warriors with wings are allowed to fly.[6]

Dium finds an opportunity to sneak-attack Kuririn, shooting a fireball from his mouth. Kuririn freezes, but Gohan appears in front of him and catches Dium's attack, transforming it into a counterattack which Dium barely dodges. Gohan tells Kuririn that there is no need for them to get in unnecessary fights; as long as one of them makes it to the end, they will win. Dium thinks that Gohan is mocking him, so he dives toward the Universe 7 group in anger. Piccolo argues that they can still take out anyone who attacks them, throwing off his cape just before Dium attacks with another mouth blast. The group scatters, and Dium follows Kuririn, forcing him to dodge with rapid fire blasts. Kuririn thinks that even though Beerus told him to avoid fights and concentrate on survival, he should take out other fighters when he has the chance. He attacks Dium with a triple Kienzan, clipping Dium's wing, while the Turtle Hermit follows up with a Kamehameha, forcing Dium out of the arena. Rumoosh punishes Dium by bashing his head with his trunk, and Dium apologizes.[2]

On the sidelines, Dium and the other eliminated male members of the Universe 10 team are enthused by the transformations of Universe 2's Maiden Squadron.[7]

After the elimination of Obni, Universe 10 is erased.[8] When No. 17 uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore all of the destroyed universes, Dium is seen with his teammates and Gowasu in the Kaiōshin realm of Universe 10.[9]

Name

Dium's name is likely derived from the -dium suffix used for various chemical elements. This pun follows the theme of Universe 10 warriors being named after elements of the periodic table.[10]

Production

Kusu leads the Universe 10 team in a dance.[4]

In Dragon Ball Super Episode 90, the Universe 10 team appears hooded, with the exception of Mulithim. They remain hooded in Episode 91, suggesting that their designs had not yet been finalized when animation began on these episodes, though by Episode 91, Dium's wings can be seen through the sleeves of his robe.

Performance

Dium is voiced by Naoki Tatsuta, the voice of Oolong. Tatsuta also took over narration and the voice of Kaiō when Jōji Yanami became ill. In the FUNimation dub, Dium is voiced by John Burgmeier, a scriptwriter who is best known as the voice of Tenshinhan.
