Lavenda is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Lavenda makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as one of the chosen representatives of Universe Nine in the Zen Exhibition Match.

Biography

Also known as "Poison Lavenda", he is the middle brother of Trio the Dangers. Lavenda manipulates poison freely and never wins by any other means.[2]

Zen Exhibition Match

Lavenda represents Universe Nine in the second fight of the Zen Exhibition Match, versus Son Gohan of Universe Seven. After the defeat of Basil, Rou is concerned that Lavenda will lose, but Lavenda thinks that, if he can kill his opponent, he has an advantage, and the Great Priest had declared during Basil's match that there were no rules. Bergamo tells Lavenda to kill to his heart's content.[3]

Early in the fight, Lavenda blows poison gas into Gohan's face, blinding him. He then breathes the poison gas onto his fists, where it seems to stick. Lavenda tells Gohan that if he is exposed to too much of the poison, his body will rot. Rou gloats, and Shin is disgusted. He tells Gohan to take a senzu; Rou gave Basil a healing drug, so it is only fair. However Gohan asks that no one interfere; he wants to win with his own strength. Bergamo wonders how long Gohan will last with the poison, but Goku asks Shin to hand over the senzu to him. Mister Satan is worried about Gohan, but Goku thinks this will be good training for him since he hasn't fought in a while.

Lavenda attempts to mislead Gohan about his position by speaking, telling Gohan again that the poison will gradually spread throughout his body until it rots, but Gohan meditates and tells himself not to be fooled by Lavenda's voice, to instead sense his movements and presence. Lavenda tries to sneak up on Gohan from behind, but Gohan senses his movements and blocks him, surprising Satan, Rou, and the Omni-Kings. Lavenda thinks it was a fluke, but Gohan continues to defend and attack without difficulty. Rou thinks this should be impossible, but Bergamo tells him that being blinded has heightened Gohan's other senses. Bergamo finds him a worthy opponent.

Lavenda is frustrated and tells Gohan he will kill him, taking to the air so that Gohan cannot sense his movements, then hitting Gohan with energy attacks from above. Again, Satan is worried but Goku thinks this is the best kind of training for Gohan. Rou tells Lavenda to finish him, but then Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, which makes him better able to sense where Lavenda is; the Omni-Kings are impressed by this form; Cae remarks on it, and Toppo realizes the Saiyans are beings that can manipulate their battle power. Lavenda thinks Gohan still won't be able to sense him, but he attacks and Gohan easily knocks everything away. Gohan tells Lavenda that his ki lets him know where Lavenda is; Goku is impressed, and Shin observes that Gohan is reflecting his ki off of Lavenda. Whis compares it to radar, but he says that using Super Saiyan in this way could be a double-edged sword. Goku realizes that Gohan should finish the fight soon. Gohan tries to put all of his power into a final attack, but he loses his transformation and collapses onto the fighting stage. Whis explains that the transformation accelerated the spread of the poison.

Lavenda attacks Gohan with even more poison and Gohan struggles to keep up. He tries taking to the air, but Lavenda chases after him. Gohan decides to risk transforming again to try his final attack one more time; Lavenda matches him, smiling as he watches the poison spread even more, but Gohan persists, flying directly into Lavenda's poison cloud to catch him in a full nelson and crash him into the fighting stage. Gohan stands and declares himself the winner, since Lavenda cannot stand at all, but then Gohan collapses again, and the Great Priest declares the fight a draw.[1] Lavenda then joins his brother Basil to support Bergamo in his match against Goku.[4]

After the Zen Exhibition Match, Mohito accompanies Sidra to check in on the Trio de Dangers, who are trying to recruit fighters for the Tournament of Power, but the world they have visited has erupted in violent chaos. Mohito asks what is going on, and Basil apologizes while Lavenda explains that news of the universe's impending destruction has led to riots. Bergamo says that these people intend to abandon Universe 9 for another universe, which seems to make Mohito angry. Sidra asks how many warriors they have managed to recruit, and Basil tells him none. This makes Mohito even angrier, and Sidra uses Destruction on the rioting city, reducing it to a crater. He tells them that this world is hopeless, and that they should go somewhere else.[5]

Tournament of Power

Lavenda is one of the ten fighters representing Universe Nine at the Tournament of Power. He and he and his brothers are the last members of their universe to be eliminated.[6] They are knocked out of the ring by the Final Kamehameha of Goku and Vegeta.[7] Lavenda's universe is erased by the Omni-Kings, but they are revived by Super Shenlong thanks to No. 17's wish at the conclusion of the tournament.[8]

Name

Lavenda's name is a modified form of the Japanese transliteration of "lavender" (ラベンダー/rabendā), an aromatic evergreen shrub of the mint family, with narrow leaves and bluish-purple flowers. Its dried flowers and leaves are often used as culinary herbs, while their oils are used commercially for scent applications. The character name drops the vowel elongation used to transliterate words ending in -er.

Performance

Lavenda is voiced by Takeshi Kusao, best known as the voice of Trunks. Kusao also gives his voice to Narirama for the Tournament of Power. In the FUNimation dub, Lavenda is voiced by Chris Guerrero, who voiced several minor roles in Dragon Ball Z Kai.
