Universe Nine is called the "Underhanded Universe". Their rank at the beginning of the Tournament of Power is No. 12 out of 12.[1] The universe is ruled by the Kaiōshin Rou, the God of Destruction Sidra, and his attendant Angel Mohito.

Rou (ロウ)

Rou is known for using vulgar language unfitting of a Kaiōshin, but he thinks himself clever[3] and tends to make fun of other universes.[4]Rou's name pun is unknown, but many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and Louhi (ロウヒ Rouhi), a wicked queen and witch of Finnish mythology, is a likely source for his name.[5] "Rō" (老 meaning "old" or "elder") has been used before in the series in reference to the Elder Kaiōshin who had been locked away in the Z-Sword several generations prior.

Sidra (シドラ)

Sidra is indecisive and normally cannot bring himself to destroy anything, often suffering from depression due to his responsibilities,[6] but he destroyed an entire planet of people who rioted in fear of the destruction of their universe.[7] Sidra's name comes directly from the katakana spelling of the Spanish word for "cider", shidra (シドラ shidora). The word used to refer to alcoholic "cider" in Japanese is "cidre" (シードル/shīdoru). Cider is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples. Sidra's name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]

Mohito (モヒイト)

Mohito is a knowledgeable genius-type who looks at things dispassionately.[1] Exasperated by his loser Kaiōshin and loser God of Destruction, he turns a blind eye to their violent exchanges.[7] Mohito's name is likely derived from Mojito (モヒート Mohiito), a Cuban cocktail that consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda water, and mint. This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]

Basil (バジル)

Also known as "Kicker Basil", he is a fast and agile warrior who specializes in footwork and the youngest brother of Trio the Dangers, after Bergamo and Lavenda.[8] Basil (バジル bajiru) is an aromatic annual herb of the mint family, native to tropical Asia, which is typically used as a culinary herb, especially in Mediterranean dishes.

Lavenda (ラベンダ)

Also known as "Poison Lavenda", he is the middle brother of Trio the Dangers. Lavenda manipulates poison freely and never wins by any other means.[9] Lavenda's name is a modified form of the Japanese transliteration of "lavender" (ラベンダー rabendā), an aromatic evergreen shrub of the mint family, with narrow leaves and bluish-purple flowers. Its dried flowers and leaves are often used as culinary herbs, while their oils are used commercially for scent applications. The character name drops the vowel elongation used to transliterate words ending in -er.

Bergamo (ベルガモ)

Also known as "Crusher Bergamo", he is the eldest brother of Trio the Dangers. Bergamo is capable of taking his opponent's techniques and turning it into his own power.[7] Bergamo's name is derived from bergamot (ベルガモット berugamotto), a fragrant citrus fruit whose extracts and skin are used to scent food, perfumes, and cosmetics.

Roselle (ローゼル)

Roselle is a bat-like warrior. In the Tournament of Power, he was unable to endure Freeza's concentrated attack, so he fled the ring of his own volition.[7] Roselle's name is likely derived from Roselle (ローゼル), an annual or perennial herb cultivated for its fiber and edible external portion of the flower. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "roselle" in Japanese.

Oregano (オレガノ)

Oregano blows threads from the palms of his hands to restrain his opponents. In the Tournament of Power, he is dropped out of bounds with a blow from Vegeta.[7] Oregano's name is likely derived from Oregano (オレガノ), a flowering plant in the mint family. Its leaves are harvested and dried for use as a culinary herb. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "oregano" in Japanese.

Hyssop (ヒソップ)

Hyssop is a giant with an absolute zero body, able to instantly freeze anything he comes in contact with. In the Tournament of Power, he is dropped out by Vegeta's attack.[7] Hyssop's name is likely derived from Hyssop (ヒソップ), an evergreen garden herb of the mint family, grown for its aromatic leaves and flowers. The plant has long been used as a flavoring for foods and beverages. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "hyssop" in Japanese.

Chappil (チャッピル)

Chappil is known as the Iron Skin Battler, a steel-skinned warrior. In the Tournament of Power, he is knocked out of the ring by Goku's strong blow.[7] Chappil's name is likely derived from Chevril (チャービル), an annual herb related to parsley whose leaves are used as a culinary seasoning. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "chervil" in Japanese with the vowel elongation dropped from the "cha" syllable, the proceeding "bi" syllable’s diacritic sign changed, and a consonant elongation added to the new "pi" syllable.

Sorrel (ソレル)

Sorrel is a warrior with a cute, rabbit-like appearance. In the Tournament of Power, she was dropped out during the Goku and Vegeta versus Universe 9 melee.[7] Sorrel's name is likely derived from Sorrel (ソレル), a hardy perennial herb that is cultivated as a garden herb or salad vegetable. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write the English word "sorrel" in Japanese. The herb is referred to as suiba (スイバ) in Japan.

Hop (ホップ)

With an appearance like a cat, Hop tears up opponents with long, sharp claws. In the Tournament of Power, she was dropped out of the ring by Vegeta's blow.[7] Hop's name is likely derived from Hops (ホップ), the flowers of the hop plant Humulus lupulus. The dried flower is used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart bitter, zesty, or citric flavors. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "hop" in Japanese.

Comfrey (コンフリー)

In the Tournament of Power, Comfrey was dropped out of the ring by Goku's intense blow.[7] Comfrey's name is likely derived from Comfrey (コンフリー), a perennial herb with large, hairy broad leaves that bears small bell-shaped flowers of various colors. The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "comfrey" in Japanese.
