Destruction (破壊 hakai) is a power associated with the Gods of Destruction (破壊神 hakaishin). It exists to balance the power of Creation used by the Kaiō and Kaiōshin, among others.[1] When someone is killed with the power of Destruction, they are destroyed completely and their soul does not pass to the afterlife.[2]

The word "hakai" (often left untranslated) is spoken as an incantation when a very specific Destruction technique is used. The user holds up one hand, palm facing the person or place that is to be destroyed, and says "Destruction", and then the target breaks up into evaporating particles. There is no energy ball or beam; the technique lands similarly to a shockwave. This technique is used in the anime by Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7,[3] and Sidra, the God of Destruction of Universe 9.[4] In the manga, the technique is used by Beerus,[5] Son Goku (the only mortal to use this specialized technique),[6] and Vermoud, the God of Destruction of Universe 11.[7]

The incantation is also used when Toppo fights with balls of "Destruction energy" (破壊のエネルギー hakai no enerugii)[2] in episodes 125 and 126, though a successful Destruction of any of his opponents would have disqualified him from the Tournament of Power. These balls of Destruction energy are introduced when Sidra, the God of Destruction of Universe 9, gives one to an assassin to kill Freeza, as seen in the assassin's flashback in episode 95.

Beerus uses the power of Destruction on an egg in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

It is implied that all of the Gods of Destruction possess this energy, but it is not always clear whether they are using it. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Destruction energy is associated with a purple aura. In some cases, the result of the attack is conclusive. For example, Beerus appears to use Destruction when he taps an egg in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods; the egg is reduced to dust and the impact ripples are purple.

Name

The term "hakai" (破壊) is the mundane Japanese word for "destruction". Even the term "hakaishin" (破壊神) is an established word in Japanese, sometimes used to describe real-world mythological figures. However, when the term "hakai" is used as an incantation in the specialized Destruction technique, it is sometimes left untranslated. For example, it is not translated in the Funimation English dub, the Latin American and European Spanish dubs, and the Brazilian Portuguese dub, while the term is translated in the European Portuguese dub (destruição), the French dub (destruction), the Italian dub (distruzione), the German dub (Zerstörung), the Polish dub (zniszczenie), and the Korean dub (파괴 pagoe).

The Toei Animation English simulcast subtitles use "Destroy" in Dragon Ball Super Episode 59, an imperative verb in place of a noun. For the Viz English translation of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 19, Toshikazu Aizawa also tries an imperative verb: "Begone!!" In chapter 25, when Goku uses the technique, Aizawa uses "Destruction", perhaps because Goku spells it out just before he uses it: this is the same technique Beerus used on the Zamasu of his world. For Funimation's English subtitles, Steven J. Simmons uses yet another imperative verb: "Destruct". Toei and Simmons continue to use "Destroy" and "Destruct" respectively throughout episodes 125 and 126, when Toppo uses the incantation frequently. The Funimation dub continues to use "hakai". Toppo does not use the incantation in the manga, nor does Vermoud when he uses the specialized technique in chapter 28.

For Sidra's hakai no enerugii (破壊のエネルギー) in episode 95, Simmons uses "destruction energy", while Toei makes it into a proper noun: "Energy of Destruction". The Funimation dub also uses "Energy of Destruction". This plot point is unique to the anime, as is the entire concept of Destruction Energy; hakai only exists as a mundane word or descriptor, or as a specialized technique that even Goku can use.

Usage

General

Beerus destroys a planet in Dragon Ball Super Episode 2.

In Dragon Ball Super Episode 1, Beerus taps a table in the same way that he tapped the egg in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. A purple ripple spreads from the impact point, and this causes half of the planet to explode. In episode 2, by contrast, he drops a tiny ball of white light onto another planet; it sinks below the surface and destroys the entire planet in what appears to be a traditional fashion (similar to how Freeza destroyed Namek and Earth). It is possible that the first planet was halved with Destruction, and that the second planet was destroyed conventionally, allowing the souls to pass into the afterlife, but nothing of the sort is explicitly implied.
