"Ki Manipulation Techniques" (気功技; kikō-waza) are attacks that utilize the secret energy that lies hidden within one's body (ki). By utilizing this materialized energy converted from energy inside one's body, one can produce formidable special attacks. Ki is said to be possessed by everyone, although it is seen that not many are able to control it at will. Martial artists in the world of Dragon Ball frequently use many ki manipulated techniques with different names and forms. However, ordinary people have a low degree of familiarity with ki manipulation techniques, and Mister Satan interpreted the ki manipulation techniques that Son Goku used as being mere tricks.
Basic
Techniques within the Basic category (基本型; kihon-gata) include attacks where ki is gathered in the user's hands and fired at an opponent to inflict massive damage. Though the mechanics of these techniques are simple, their power increases in proportion to the user's ki level.[1]
A Kikōha with the power to instantly transform a city into a wasteland. Demon King Piccolo announces on television that, every year on May 9th, he will use this technique on a district.[2] Demon King Piccolo dies before he ever has a chance to make good on his threat.
A technique where the user presses their hands together and concentrates their nerves to double within their palms their body's faint electrical current, then fires it at their opponent. The person on the receiving end of this attack becomes numb and unable to move due to the extreme electrical shock, and will they die unless they surrender. The Turtle Hermit only uses this technique twice in his lifetime: once against Goku, and once against his grandfather, Son Gohan. This ace-in-the-hole special technique is unleashed during the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai's final round.[3]
A Kikōha which Vegeta fires at Artificial Human No. 19. In can be said that this technique, which easily destroys Artificial Human No. 19, is the Super Saiyan Vegeta version of the Galic Cannon. However, this technique differs from the Galic Cannon in how the user fires the technique and manipulates ki. The user first raises one hand forward and unleashes a ki sphere from their palm. In contrast with the Galic Cannon's wide attack range, this attack's condensed cluster of ki is able to deal serious damage only within a specific range. After the Big Bang Attack hits, the ground starting with where Artificial Human No. 19 stood vanishes as if it were excavated. In terms of might, this attack is Vegeta's strongest technique from this era. Vegetto uses this technique in his battle against Boo. Despite going easy on him, this technique holds enough incredible power to blow Boo apart in an instant. In DBZ Movie 6, Vegeta fires this technique off at point-blank range against Metal Coola, who avoids the attack. Vegeta prepares to fire the technique at Baby (inhabiting Gohan's body), but is interrupted by Goten.[4] After absorbing OG73-i and grabbing Vegeta's neck, Moro uses the Big Bang Attack on Vegeta himself.[5]
With a technique resembling the Kienzan, the user sends ki flying from their hands to cut through their opponent's body. After escaping from the Room of Spirit and Time, Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks uses this technique in his battle with Boo to cut him right in half.[6]
By simultaneously firing energy blasts from point-blank range, the users' attacks increase in power several times past their ordinary levels. Ultimately, this attack is ineffective against the immortal Garlic Jr.[7]
The user releases a ball of ki with their palm and knocks it toward their opponent like a volleyball attack. While fighting alongside Butta, Jheese uses this attack against Goku.[8]
A technique in which two users each raise their ki and combine it into a super powerful energy blast to hit the opponent. The users of this cooperative technique throw it together. Zald and Tard fire this technique at Gohan, but are unable to inflict damage.[9]
With this technique, the user summons an enormous ball of ki from the palm of their hand and thrusts it into the ground. The magma deep beneath the surface swells from the ki's power and explodes. After this technique is unleashed, Earth vanishes without a trace. Freeza also uses a similar technique.[10]
Super Saiyan Vegeta's ultimate finishing move. The user concentrates all of their ki into both hands and fires it at their opponent. While gathering ki, both palms begin discharging electricity, and the surrounding atmosphere distorts around the user as everything sucks inward. This technique has a high energy consumption rate, and can only be unleashed when the user is in a state beyond Super Saiyan. This attack has the capability to easily destroy Earth, and its attack range can be narrowed by aiming it. This technique obliterates the upper-right half of Cell's body. In Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, Vegeta fires this technique at Hacchi Hyack, but it has no effect. Instead, he himself receives great damage as the experienced Hacchi Hyack launches a counterattack.[12]
A massive finishing move which Vegetto uses against Merged Zamasu.[13][14] Goku and Vegeta use it together as a combo attack against the Trio de Dangers.[15] In both incarnations, the blast appears as one giant blue energy wave with thinner yellow energy spiraling around it.
Vegeta's new finishing move from Dragon Ball GT. The user gathers energy and fires a beam with one or both hands. Although its destructive power is greater than that of Final Flash, this technique is ineffective against Super No. 17.[12]
A formidable technique in which the user fires a massive amount of ki with both hands, burning the opponent's body. This technique is used in conjunction with Brain Crash Hammer. Boo is on the receiving end of this technique, but he regenerates almost right away.[12]
Vegeta's equivalent to the Kamehameha, which differs in how the user's hands are positioned when ki is fired. The user launches their palms at their opponent and pushes out ki. The ki released from both palms becomes one, resulting in a torrent of powerful ki. Vegeta uses this technique against Goku, but his awesome power is ultimately negated by the Kaio-Ken x4 Kamehameha.[16] Cabba surprises Vegeta with this technique when they face-off on the Nameless Planet.[17] Future Trunks uses this technique against Goku Black.[18]
Baby's special move while in the form of a Golden Great Ape. This enhanced technique is even more powerful than Vegeta's Galic Cannon. Baby fires it at Earth to kill everyone in an attempt to provoke Goku. Its power backs Goku (in his Super Saiyan 4 form) into a corner.[16]
In the form of a Golden Great Ape, Baby discharges Super Galic Cannons in rapid succession with all of his might, but it is simply no match for Super Saiyan 4Goku.[16]
An attack which Vegeta first unleashes against Merged Zamasu. The user prepares the techniques by holding their arms back at their side, and fires it in a stance nearly identical to the Final Flash, but with the bottom of their palms facing outward. Though this technique never appears in the anime, it does show up in video games such as Super Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle.
A technique for controlling one's ki devised by the Turtle Hermit, where the user condenses their ki in a single spot and fires it. Its power varies according to the strength of its user's ki, and by mastering the technique, the user can control its power. Goku is able to immediately learn this technique thanks to his ki training with his grandfather, Son Gohan, and his advantageous Saiyan characteristics. Since Tenshinhan is so easily able to imitate this technique, it can be said that so long as anyone is able to control their ki, they can perform the Kamehameha.[19]
A technique Goku uses in his Super Saiyan 4 state to deal a great amount of damage to Baby. Since the technique causes its user to grind to a halt while charging ki, Si Xing Long, who is faster than Goku, renders the technique unusable by exploiting this weakness.

Because Wu Xing Long's elastic body formed from electric slime boasts a high defensive power, he is able to catch a 10x Kamehameha fired by Super Saiyan 4 Goku and shoot the energy back in the shape of a ball.

A technique where the user fires a Kamehameha and manipulates the tail end of it while holding the other end in the palm of their hand. Goku uses this technique against Demon King Piccolo.

A Kamehameha variation used to cancel out an opponent's Kamehameha. Goku fires this technique quickly against Jackie Chun'sKamehameha in the final match of the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai. [20] While fighting against Cell in Hell, Goku performs this technique by name, though in a manner and with a function closer to Kamehameha Bounceback.[21]
A technique where the user prepares two Kamehameha underwater, and sends them flying into the sky. While their opponent is distracted in the direction of the flying energy, the user can land a direct attack. Goku uses this technique to trick Freeza.[20]
A technique where the user lets out a Kiai after estimating the timing of an oncoming Kamehameha to launch it back at their opponent. This technique is launched against Yamcha'sKamehameha during the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.[20]
A technique where the user fires a Kamehameha from their feet to rocket towards their opponent. Since both of the user's hands are free, they are able to use a variety of attacks in conjunction with this technique.[20]
A Kamehameha variation which requires the user to push their muscles to the fullest in order to draw out incredible destructive power. This technique holds the power to destroy the moon.[20]
A technique to rapidly fire multiple Kamehameha, used only by those who have undergone strict training. While traveling in his spaceship to Planet Namek, Goku uses this technique to raise his battle power.[22]
A powered-up version of the Kamehameha, a result of training in the Heavenly Realm with God. This technique holds the power to repel Piccolo's powerful Makōsen.

An attack where the user fires a Kamehameha after suddenly teleporting in front of their opponent, denying them a chance to react. Goku uses this technique to obliterate Cell's upper body.[20]
Goten fires this technique against Trunks' energy wave during the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai. This technique is identical to the Kamehameha used by Goku and the others, with its only difference being in name (a simple misunderstanding or slip-up on Goten's part). Because Goten is not yet very skilled at controlling his energy waves during his match with Trunks, this technique destroys a part of the shrine on the tournament grounds.[19]
An emission technique to externally materialize the body's inner energy. Many warriors appearing throughout the story use it and refer to it in different ways ("Energy Wave", "Energy Blast", etc.), but these are all the same technique. The size and power of a Kikōha will vary depending on the amount of ki used. This technique can take two different forms: a beam like the Kamehameha, or a ball of light like the Genki-Dama.[23]
An attack that uses both hands to unleash a mighty ball of ki. Gohan is struck by this technique, sending him far away and leaving him injured on the verge of death. Chilled uses this technique against Bardock, but is unable to deal any damage to the awakened Super Saiyan. For Beerus, this attack is in the form of a huge energy blast. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan God and exhausts his power to stop the attack.[23]
A technique to attack two opponents at the same time by unleashing ki separately from both hands. Raditz uses this technique in his battle with Goku and Piccolo, drawing out their gutsiness.[23]
A technique where the user rapidly shoots multiple beam-like ki from their fingertip. It requires a significant battle value to perform. This technique was first used in the battle on Planet Namek.[25]
A technique to rapidly fire dozens of ki blasts and suspend them in order to surround the opponent, then attack by simultaneously aiming them at the opponent on cue.[23]
To attack by firing ki with both hands, sending it into the sky where it splits it into multiple beams, and sending it back down at the opponent. Enraged by Yamcha's death, Kuririn unleashes this technique upon Vegeta and the Saibaiman.[23]
In the battle against Garlic Jr., Gohan unconsciously uses this technique to help Goku out of a pinch. He creates a large energy blast around himself, knocking Garlic Jr. into the Dead Zone.[23]
A technique where the user clasps both fists and fills them with ki, and then fires the technique by thrusting one palm forward at a time. It is also possible to delay the attack. Demon King Piccolo defeats Goku with this attack.[26]
A ki manipulation technique in which the user holds both palms in front of their forehead and gathers ki, then fires it in a cluster by thrusting both hands forward at the opponent. It is one of the techniques Piccolo instills in Gohan to turn him into a full-fledged warrior in preparation for the battle with Nappa and Vegeta. Fundamentally, it is the same kind of technique as Kamehameha, differing only in their ki gathering poses. Gohan fires this technique at Nappa to get revenge for Piccolo, who died for his sake. However, it is easily repelled. Gohan uses this technique with Trunks in DBZ Movie 10.[26]
A technique Boo unleashes after he follows the ki of Piccolo and the others to God's Temple. By shooting countless curving Kikōha out from one hand, Boo eradicates the people on Earth's surface. Only Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, Mister Satan, and Bee evade the attack. The torrent of light which rains down upon Earth is so intense that Mister Satan incorrectly wonders aloud if what he's seeing are fireworks.[27]
A technique used by the Neko Majins in which the user condenses their ki in one place and fires it just like a Kamehameha. Neko Majin uses this technique to defeat a resurrected demon, and Neko Majin Z uses it in his battle with Onio. In his bout with Goku, Neko Majin Z fires a massive Nekohameha which Goku only narrowly avoids.[28]
An attack in which the user fires Kikōha in rapid succession while in a Super Saiyan 3 state. With a power capable of destroying Earth, Gotenks fires this technique into the massive hole in the ground where Majin Boo lies.[29]
A technique intended to defeat Gotenks. The user fires a spherical energy blast from their mouth, and its might is strong enough that even Gotenks cannot stop it.[30]
A technique Aca uses in his battle against Gotenks. The user breathes deeply and creates a mass of energy, which is fired with shots across a wide range.[30]
Aca's last resort finisher. The user spits out a massive, amber energy blast far surpassing the Wahaha no Ha from their mouth.[30]
Concentration
Concentration-type (集中型; shūchū-gata) techniques gather ki from all over the user's body, allowing them to fire it from a smaller part of their body (such as the fingertips or mouth) in a focused form. Concentrating ki results in a heightened attack strength at the cost of the time which may be required to prepare it.[31]
A technique where the user grasps their fists while collecting ki from their entire body, then aims and fires it at their opponent with both hands. While accumulating ki, to help pull forth the user's fighting spirit from their body, a state of discharge occurs and creates friction in the surrounding atmosphere. During this period, the user is left in a defenseless state, leaving them wide open to a cheap shot from their opponent. This technique is capable of opening a huge hole in the ground, launching the person on the receiving end of the attack deep inside. Piccolo uses this in his fight with Goku to deal a massive amount of damage.[2]
A Crane Hermit School secret assassnination technique devised by the Crane Hermit. The user accumulates ki in their fingertip, then shouts "Dodonpa!!" to fire their ki like a thin, sharp arrow to deal strong damage to their opponent. In order to reliably kill their opponent in one blow, the user must aim for a vital body part like the heart. Because its attack range is not wide like the Kamehameha's, someone with a high enough battle value can stop this technique with the palm of their hand. In the struggle over the Dragon Balls in the Karin Holy Land, Tao Pai-pai uses this technique to make Goku faint.[11]
After having been defeated by Son Goku and turned into a cyborg, Tao Pai-pai can fire a powered-up Dodonpa from a cannon built into his right arm. With its lock-on capability, he can bring down an opponent without fail.[28]
A technique where the user focuses the ki within their body and blasts it towards their opponent through their mouth with all of their might. Since this technique holds the strongest destructive power in Nappa's skill set, he prides himself by boastfully referring to it as his "Greatest Technique".[32]
A technique Freeza uses during his battle with Goku. The user amasses ki in their fingertips and swings them downward like a whip. The ki which is swung down proceeds to creep across the ground, cleaving it in two. This technique's destructive power is tremendous, making deep fissures as far away as Planet Namek's horizon. This destructive force is indicative of Freeza's capabilities at only 50% power.[33]
A technique Piccolo develops through training after losing to Goku in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Though the technique was devised with the intent to kill Goku, Piccolo first uses it while battling against Raditz. The user concentrates ki in their fingertips and fires it in a spiral-like formation. As the technique centralizes in a single point, its power is enough to pierce straight through an opponent's body. Though it holds considerable destructive and penetrative power, its weakness lies in the time required to accumulate the user's ki. Consequently, Raditz is able to anticipate the attack, and the first shot only destroys his shoulder pad. However, Piccolo displays the technique's dreadful power when he fires it a second time, as it not only pierces through Raditz's body, but Goku as well, who had been forcibly holding Raditz in place. In the Jump Super Anime Tour 2008 animation, Piccolo uses this technique to repel the Wahahanoha by altering its trajectory when Gotenks fails to stop it. Cell, also capable of using this technique due to inheriting Piccolo's biology, fires it against Piccolo during their fight in Ginger Town with a power on par as when Piccolo first devised it. He also uses it during Dragon Ball GT against Goku in Hell, who calls him a copycat and easily dodges the technique.[34] During the tournament against Universe 6, Piccolo attempts to use the technique against Frost, but is poisoned and out-matched by his opponent.[35]
A technique where the user sucks in air while focusing all of their ki inward, decides on a cool pose, shouts "Reacoom Eraser Gun!!", and spits out the concentrated ki from their mouth all at once.
It holds enough tremendous destructive power to vaporize the ground and alter the planet's landscape. However, the time required to prepare the technique creates a huge opening, allowing chance for a counterattack. In the struggle over the Namekian Dragon Balls, Reacoom unleashes this attack to take Vegeta's life.[36]
Accumulation
Techniques in the Accumulation category (集積型; shūseki-gata) allow the user to collect ki from all living creatures and flora, and wield it offensively. These techniques vary in power depending on the amount of ki collected, and leave the user defenseless up until they unleash the attack.[37]
A technique which collects and unleashes the energy possessed by grass, trees, humans, animals, various things, and the atmosphere. Even with just the energy collected on Kaiō's Planet, it holds the power to destroy a large brick moving at super-speed. Judging by the Earth's size in addition to the energy coming from the Sun, it would stand to reason that a Genki-Dama formed on Earth could hold the power to destroy a planet. This technique's weakness is that the user must remain defenseless in one spot until it is fired. In Dragon Ball Z Movies 2 and 4, the energy from everything on Earth is collected in an ordinary fashion. The energy in Dragon Ball Z Movie 3 is collected twice: once in the usual way and then collected from the Shinseiju. In Dragon Ball Z Movie 7, Goku unconsciously absorbs the Genki-Dama's enormous energy in his Super Saiyan state and uses it to defeat Artificial Human No. 13.[38] During the Tournament of Power, Goku launches a Genki-Dama at Jiren, but the technique backfires, enabling Goku to activate Ultra Instinct.[39]
A Genki-Dama formed to defeat Majin Boo by requesting that everyone on Earth donate as much ki as they are able. It holds a tremendous destructive power fueled by the hopes of everyone. In the anime, Goku is able to discern from whom each bit of genki being gathered originates by the feel of their ki.[40]
A technique where the user collects and unleashes the energy from parasitically brainwashed people, said to be the evil Genki-Dama. Its collected wicked ki contains the Tsufruins' resentment from having been wiped out by the Saiyans.[29]
A technique which focuses the hatred of warriors who died without fulfilling their ambitions within the user's body and releases it as an energy wave. Hacchi Hyack uses it while warring against Goku and the others. Though it has power enough to drive a Super Saiyan into a corner with one shot, it leaves its user open right before the technique is unleashed.[29]
A technique which focuses ki gathered from living beings around the world into the shape of a giant sword. Future Trunks uses this technique to destroy Merged Zamasu's physical form.[42]
Kiai
Techniques within the Kiai category (気合い型; kiai-gata) are invisible attacks that can be fired or dispersed without leaving a trace. Their power can extend across extremely wide areas.[43]
A technique in which the user yells and produces energy from their entire body. As the user raises their ki, they create a close-range forceful wind to attack their opponent. In the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai, Oob angrily unleashes this technique in response to Goku's foul mouth.[22]
A technique to blow the opponent back by scowling at them with a piercing glance. Since the attack is invisble, it allows the user to deliver a surprise attack to their opponent. Majin Boo instantly learns and imitates this technique after Shin uses it against him.[22] Goku Black uses this technique to blow away Mai.[44]
The secret technique of the Crane Hermit Style. The user concentrates, then shouts and immediately fires the technique. The Kikōhō has no visible trajectory, differentiating it from other Kikōha-like techniques such as the Kamehameha. Its destructive force is so powerful that it caused the Tenka'ichi Budōkai fighting ring to vanish in a flash. It seems as though mercilessly killing people was the original purpose of this Crane Hermit Style technique. Since this technique consumes a massive amount of the user's ki, unleashing it is only viable as a means to finish off their opponent.[25]
A technique that increases the power of Kikōhō. This attack is only possible thanks to Tenshinhan improving his abilities through strict training. To prevent Cell's quest to absorb No. 18, Tenshinhan unleashes this technique, but it uses up all of his strength and he collapses.[25]
After having transformed into the prince of destruction, Vegeta unleashes this technique in order to defeat Majin Boo in exchange for his life. This is a final self-destruction technique in which the user detonates all of the ki in their body in order to engulf their opponent. Its tremendous destructive power affects the Earth itself, forming one kilometer-in-diameter crater around the user.[32]
A wall of air which occurs when the body moves through the atmosphere faster than the speed of sound, acting practically as a shockwave. Since this technique does not attack directly with ki, it is not technically what would be considered a "Ki Manipulation Technique", but it is similar in its ability to deal great damage to distant enemies. The user can artificially generate a shockwave to damage their enemy by moving their hands swiftly or by emitting ki. By not focusing their ki, the user may project a force in every direction. In Dragon Ball GT, Lood launches a shockwave from his mouth, with such power to blow away Trunks with a direct hit.[27]
An attack which releases tremendous ki from the user's entire body. It holds the destructive power to blow up the entirety of the Tenka'ichi Budōkai venue. Piccolo unleashes this attack as a final gambit to defeat Goku.[45]
By thrusting their fist forward with incredible momentum, the user fires a shockwave toward their opponent. Goku learns this technique from God through strict training in the Heavenly Realm, and uses it to blow Chi-Chi out of the ring in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.[27]
Ki is unleashed from the user's entire body, causing intense shockwaves that annihilate everything around them. Because this technique consumes a lot of ki, it is not used often while fighting, and generally only as a powerful last resort.[27]
An attack in which the user makes a strange noise while releasing a bullet-like shockwave from their fingertips toward their opponent. When it is unleashed in rapid-fire succession, the opponent will be left battered without the chance to launch a counterattack. Piccolo falls prey to this technique.[27]
Alteration
Techniques that fall under the Alteration category (変化型; henka-gata) represent attacks in which the user transforms the ki they release from their hands into a certain shape rather than just exploding it forward. Each Alteration technique user employs unique shapes for their ki, such as discs, donuts, or blades.[46]
A sphere of ki containing binding properties, which when launched at the opponent, captures them within. The user then launches the ki sphere towards the ground at super-speed. Because the opponent is completely helpless while inside the ki sphere, they are sent flying into the ground, taking damage from an impact large enough to alter the terrain. This is a high-level technique capable only by someone who wields both psychic powers and strong energy, like Freeza. Freeza attacks Goku with this technique during their fight on Namek.[47]
By concentrating energy in their right hand and releasing it through their fingertips, the user can use their hand like a sword. With its red-colored energy, this technique is able to chop through anything. This technique is used against Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z Movie 5.[48]
Gotenks uses this technique in his fight with Majin Boo. By forming a circle in the air with their fingertips, the user can freely manipulate and guide a donut-style cluster of ki. Though this technique itself holds no special power, the donut can be used to bind and squeeze the user's opponent and deal incredible damage. Primarily, this technique is for restricting an opponent's movement.[16]
A technique in which Galactica Donuts are fired rapidly. Using this technique, Gotenks confines Majin Boo in rings of ki. As is with the regular Galactica Donut, the ki of this technique is solidified. Gotenks shrinks the ki rings around Boo, squeezing him into the approximate size of a volleyball, and connects this technique to Crashing Ultra Boo-Boo Volleyball. Gotenks stops to consider what pose he should use to perform this technique, but is interrupted by Piccolo. After having absorbed Gotenks, Boo uses this technique while battling Gohan. Boo is able to temporarily restrict his movement, but Gohan quickly tears through the donuts.[16][note 2]
A binding technique Goku uses to temporarily restrain Broli. Though initially effective, Broli overwhelms Goku and reverses the technique against him.[50]
A technique employed by Goku Black and Zamasu which allows them to attack with a blade of energy emitting from their hand. The technique is first used against Vegeta,[52] though Whis presumes that this technique was used beforehand to kill Gowasu in another timeline.[53] In the main timeline, Whis prevents Zamasu from using the technique.[54]
A technique developed by Kuririn in which the user unleashes ki in the form of a sharpened blade. The user first raises their palm up high, then forms ki into a disc rotating at high-speed and throws it forward. This spinning ki can sharply cut through an opponent like an electric saw. Kuririn first uses this technique in the fight against Nappa, and (in later battles) Vegeta and the others use similar techniques. Though they do not call it by name, they are effectively using Kienzan. In the CG animation featured in 1993's Akira Toriyama World Exhibition, Hyper Anime Dragon Ball, Cell fires off a Kienzan-like technique. In the Jump Super Anime Tour 2008 animation, Kuririn slices through a falling structure with Kienzan to protect Marron and the others. In Dragon Ball GT Episode XX, Freeza uses Kienzan while fighting alongside Cell against Goku in Hell, but Goku avoids it and rides atop it as if it were a surfboard.

A Kienzan which chases after an opponent's ki. This technique can be fired off in doubles. Freeza seems to have picked up the technique after seeing Kuririn use his Kienzan. In his battle against Goku on Planet Namek, Freeza uses this technique as his final trump card.[55]
An attack to rapidly fire multiple Kienzan at the opponent. Those on the receiving end of this technique will be cut to pieces. During the battle on Planet Namek, this technique is unleashed on Freeza to save Gohan from a pinch.[23]
A technique which momentarily releases and solidifies ki. The ki can stretch from its source, enabling the user to pierce through their opponent. Because this technique requires its user to continuously release and solidify ki, its user must possess an incredible ki. This attack is unique to Vegetto, who uses it in his battle with Majin Boo.[56] Vegetto uses his Ki Blade a second time while fighting Zamasu in the future.[57]
A small energy blast fired from the fingertips to constrain an opponent's arms, legs, and neck to bedrock. Vegeta, having opened himself to Bobbidi'ssorcery, uses this technique against Goku. Goku escapes by unleashing the full might of his ki.[29]
A finisher which Super Saiyan 3 Goku unleashes to vanquish the phantasm Hirudegarn. Goku strikes with his fist and a tremendously heightened fighting spirit explodes forth from it. His fighting spirit takes form as a shining golden dragon, and pierces all the way through Hirudegarn's body, extinguishing it with his potent power. In Dragon Ball GT, Goku defeats Super No. 17 and San Xing Long with this technique.[29]
A flame that burns with a dazzling light which rushes forward, defeating the opponent. Paikuhan uses this ultimate secret technique against Goku in the finals of the Afterlife Tournament, requiring Goku to use all of his might to endure it. However, Goku finds an opening in the moment it takes to fire the technique, and fires off a Kamehameha to achieve a turnabout victory.[58]
Guided
Guided (誘導型; yūdō-gata) techniques allow the user to control the movement of an energy blast after it is drawn out from their body. A user wielding these high-level techniques can manipulate the blast's speed and close in on a target with precision.[59]
A technique which Yamcha uses during the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, in his match against God inhabiting a human's body. As expected, having God as an opponent presents a disadvantage, but in this case Yamcha's technique is the strongest. The user first assembles a sphere of ki in the palm of their hand and hurls it toward their opponent. With their middle and index fingers joined together, the user then maneuvers the ki sphere with their hand. It is possible to continue to maneuver it even after it has gone underground. In this way, it is used as a feint. In the Jump Super Anime Tour 2008 animation, Yamcha uses this technique to protect Bulma and the others from falling
building fragments. He expertly maniuplates a ki blast and destroys all of the scattered debris.[33]
A new finishing move Yamcha uses during Universe 7's baseball match with Universe 6. Yamcha throws a baseball with the same ferocity as Rōga-Fūfū-Ken, then manipulates it as he does Sōkidan. He successfully strikes out Botamo and Cabba, who are left powerless against such a technique.
An offensive technique learned while training in the Room of Spirit and Time. Gotenks releases ki from his mouth in an ectoplasm state to create a clone of himself. This ki (which Gotenks refers to as a ghost) possesses its own consciousness, and can move freely according to Gotenks' commands. Though essentially a guided energy control technique, it shows a completely unique development, leaving even Piccolo astonished by its unpredictability and efficacy. Though this technique is created from Gotenks' child-like way of thinking, because of its power and practicality, it can be considered a high level technique. As expected of Goku and Vegeta's children, they discover new and original ways to use ki. In Dragon Ball Z Movie 12, up to 100 ghosts appear together.[60] These ki-ghosts explode on contact.[61]
An enhanced version of the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, in which 10 ghosts are released to attack the opponent in rapid succession. As is with the original technique, each ki-ghost possesses its own consciousness.
Since Boo already had an understanding of the technique, Gotenks uses Boo's curiosity as a cheap way to lure him into an attack. Ultimately, Boo is caught up in the technique and blown apart, but he easily recovers shortly after. Because these ghosts inherit Gotenks' careless personality, two of them, celebrating a flawless strategy after consulting with Gotenks, forget about the nature of themselves and grasp hands, causing them to self-destruct.[60]
This powerful technique's destructive power is amplified by the offensive capabilities of the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack's ghosts. This technique is powerful enough to leave Boo's body temporarily battered.[3]
Variations of Ki Manipulation Techniques
The use of ki is not simply used for the purpose of attacking, but can take various shapes based on the person using it. It can be used as a method of movement or to support various attack techniques. Just like the attack-based techniques, these methods of use are also rich with variation.
Movement
Movement-type (移動型; idō-gata) techniques allow the user to fly and warp in the sky. Once mastered, these techniques allow the user to fight at high altitudes, and are useful when chasing after or running from an opponent. These techniques do not have any inherent attack strength.[62]
A Crane Hermit School signature technique, which appears to have been developed by the Crane Hermit. By releasing ki from their entire body, the user can move through the air as if they are flying. Similar to the Kikōha and other techniques, this ability is considered to be basic within the ki manipulation series. Like Videl, as long as someone can learn how to use their ki, they should also be able to use this technique. Kuririn and Goku both learn this technique on their own. The speed at which the user can move through the air with Bukū-Jutsu correlates to their proficiency and the extent of their ki. Gohan is able to fly faster than Kinto-Un's maximum speed. Aliens capable of flight, such as Piccolo, employ the same principles as Bukū-Jutsu to move through the air. The Turtle Hermit does not use this technique, perhaps because he has always had either Kinto-Un or Child Gamera. Neko Majin, Neko Majin Z, and Neko Majin Mike are also able to use this technique.[12]
When the opponent is open whilst in the middle of an attack, the user emits ki from their feet while shouting "Speed up!" to augment their own attack by circling behind the opponent at super-speed.[63]
Attack Support
Attack Support (攻撃サポート型; kōgeki sapōto-gata) techniques use ki for purposes other than attack energy. They can be used to provide various kinds of support during a battle to give the user an edge, such as improving the user's battle power. These techniques do not have any inherent attack strength.[62]
A technique to defend against the enemy's attacks by creating a barrier with ki. The user is able to defend against ki manipulation techniques and physical attacks such as missiles and the like. Vegetto uses it as a means to successfully escape being absorbed by Majin Boo. However, to pull off this technique, the user must continually emit a constant flow of ki. Generally speaking, in order to cancel out the opponent's ki manipulation and physical attacks, the user must emit over twice as much ki as their opponent. Naturally, the eternal energy engine allows No. 17 and Cell (having incorporated No. 17's engine into his perfect body) to be able to use this technique. Once said to be the best in the universe at everything from ki control to strength, Vegetto is understandably able to use this technique. However, it seems as though this technique cannot block attacks from someone possessing a far stronger ki than its user. In the battle against Super No. 17, a fully-powered Goku grabs Super No. 17 tight and attempts to self-destruct, but because Super No. 17 throws up a barrier, the attack is ineffective. During the battle with the ice-wielding San Xing Long, Goku extends a barrier to prevent his whole body from becoming stuck in ice.[64]
This technique instantaneously amplifies the ki within the user's body, multiplying all their abilities such as power, speed, defensive power, etc. Because it is able to multiply the user's battle power many times over, it is extraordinarily effective when facing up against a formidable opponent. However, it's dangerous to go beyond doubling the technique, or to attempt Kaiō-Ken in high frequency, as this can destroy the user's body. If the user's battle power is 8,000, their limit is doubling the technique, and even with a battle power of 3 million, a multiplier of ten is the limit. However, when the combat is severe, Goku is forced to repeatedly push Kaiō-Ken beyond that. Although the technique was invented by North Kaiō, Goku is the first to be able to master it. The technique's first movie appearance is in Dragon Ball Z Movie 2 against Dr. Uiro, and Goku challenges Tullece with the Kaiō-Ken 10x in Dragon Ball Z Movie 3. The later movies do not specify a multiplier.[65]
During the Afterlife Tournament, Goku unveils this technique against Paikuhan. With this variation of Kaiō-Ken, the user's inner ki is amplified in an instant, drawing out their abilities even further. While in the Super Saiyan state, Goku holds the power to blow away attacks and corners Paikuhan with undetectable movement. Before he attains Super Saiyan 2, Goku uses this combined technique only once.[65]
A technique which layers the power of Kaiō-Ken on top of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. Goku develops this technique in anticipation of a rematch with Beerus. If the user loses control of their energy just a little bit while performing it, they can die. During his match with Hit, Goku unleashes it in tenfold despite not having completed the technique, risking a ninety percent chance of failure.[69] Though successful, the bodily toll causes Goku to suffer from Delayed Onset Turbulent Ki Syndrome.[70] By the time of the Tournament of Power, Goku seems to have furthered his mastery of the technique, using it several times against Jiren and others in the span of a few minutes.[71]
A technique of the Crane Hermit School, first used by Tenshinhan in his match against Son Goku at the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. The user collects ki energy in the upper half of their body, converts it into light energy, and emits that through their face. It is used to blind the opponent and retreat from battle. Its luminescence correlates to the power of the user's ki; the more ki they use, the brighter the light source. Outside of the Crane Hermit School, Goku is the first to use this technique. Super Saiyan 4 Goku unleashes this technique against Baby in order to create an opening to absorb the Saiya power of Gohan, Goten, and Trunks in an attempt to return to full power. In Hell, Cell uses this technique to blind and attempt to absorb Goku.[9]Trunks uses the technique against Goku Black and Zamasu to save Vegeta, and later reveals that Gohan taught him the technique long ago.[72]
Sealing
Sealing (封印型; fū'in-gata) techniques are special techniques to seal away evil.[62]
A technique used ten million years ago by Dai Kaiōshin to seal away Moro's magic. In the present day, he (using the good Majin Boo as his vessel) attempts to use the technique again, but is unable to due to having lost his divine power with the defeat of the pure Majin Boo.[73]
A secret art devised by Mutaito, the Turtle Hermit's master, to seal away the embodiment of evil, Demon King Piccolo. The user fires all of their life force energy from both hands, causing intense spiraling winds which swallow up the opponent, confining them within a tightly-shut container complete with an affixed talisman. Ordinary beings, after performing this secret art, draw their last breath. In exchange for his life, the Turtle Hermit unleashes this technique upon the resurrected Demon King Piccolo, but fails.[26] Against the immortal Zamasu, Piccolo suggests this technique and Goku trains overnight with the Turtle Hermit to master it.[74] Trunks learns the technique by referencing Piccolo's demonstration of the technique recorded by Bulma. Though Trunks successfully traps Zamasu within the technique, because the Turtle Hermit forgot to send Goku with the required talisman, Zamasu is able to break free.[75] In a side-story wherein a schoolboy is reincarnated as Yamcha, this version of Yamcha uses Mafūba in an attempt to defeat a different soul reincarnated as Chiaotzu.
A technique wherein the user confines their opponent with a more powerful Mafūba than their opponent's. During the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, God attempts to confine Piccolo, but the technique is reversed against him, trapping him in a small bottle marked with a talisman.[26]
