Earth's God is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Earth's God makes his debut in chapter 164, published in the 1988 #14 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Born on Planet Namek, the child of Katatz is evacuated to Earth when Namek gets plagued by extreme weather. Katatz' offspring has no memory of this and stays in the Yunzabit Highlands for decades, living in what he thinks is a house but is really the spaceship he arrived on. He has a letter saying "I will come later, please wait for me," but no one ever shows up.

Venturing out into the world, Katatz' offspring eventually meets the God of Earth and wishes to become his successor. God does not allow this, because Katatz' offspring has evil dwelling in his heart. Training hard, Katatz' offspring manages to get rid of this evil within him, which takes the form of the Demon King Piccolo. Though Katatz' offspring becomes the new God of Earth, Piccolo terrorizes the world until he is sealed away by martial artist Mutaito's Mafūba technique. Hundreds of years later, Piccolo is freed by the Pilaf Gang, but killed by Son Goku. He leaves behind an egg, though, from which his reincarnation hatches.

The wish-granting Dragon Balls that God created were rendered unusable by Piccolo, who destroyed Shenlong. Son Goku visits God's Temple hoping God will restore Shenlong, so that Piccolo's victims can be wished back to life. God says he created the Dragon Balls to give people courage and hope, but they used them for selfish reasons. Goku is not like that, though, so God agrees to grant his request as long as Goku stays at the Temple for training. He reveals that Piccolo survived in the form of a reincarnation, who will participate in the next Tenka'ichi Budōkai in three years.

Mister Popo, God's assistant, is worried that if Piccolo is killed, God will also die. God says he has been wanting to take responsiblity for the Demon King Piccolo for a long time, but he cannot commit suicide. He has been waiting for someone who can finish Piccolo off to appear, and he believes Son Goku to be that person. Popo tells Goku about the connection between Piccolo and God, though, which makes God doubt that Goku can go for the kill. He enters himself into the Tenka'ichi Budōkai as well, possessing the body of a human and calling himself "Shen" to hide his identity.

He acts the fool during the preliminary rounds, pretending to win by sheer luck or accident, and faces Yamcha in the quarter-finals. He toys with him before teaching him a lesson about not being fooled by an opponent's outward appearance, but when Yamcha lands a solid hit with his Sōkidan technique, God gets serious and immediately knocks him out of bounds. God's opponent in the semi-finals is none other than Piccolo, whom God attempts to seal away using the Mafūba. Piccolo is ready for it though, reversing the Mafūba and sealing God away instead. God returns the human body he possessed to its original owner at the last second, and yells out at Goku that he must kill Piccolo.

The next thing God knows, he has been released from the bottle he got trapped in, and Goku is fighting Piccolo in the final match. When God tries to assist Goku, the latter yells at him not to interfere with the match. Goku's friends ask God to respect Goku's wishes, and he relents. After a harrowing battle, Goku defeats Piccolo but does not let him die, because that would also kill God and render the Dragon Balls defunct. God says he is no longer worthy to be God and asks Goku to be his successor, but Goku outright refuses and leaves.

In the first Dragon Ball Z movie, Garlic Jr. collects the Dragon Balls in order to wish for immortality. His minions kidnap Goku's son Gohan in the process, because he has one of the balls on his hat. Goku goes to Garlic Jr.'s lair to try and save Gohan, and God arrives there too. He explains that 300 years ago, Garlic competed with the current God for the position of God, but the previous God saw through Garlic's evil intent and sealed his power away. Garlic Jr. wants revenge for his father, and fights God while Goku goes looking for Gohan. God has a difficult time of it, so he intends to sacrifice his own life to take Garlic Jr. down, but he is immortal now and doubts that will work. Piccolo and Goku take over and fight Garlic Jr. instead. He opens the Dead Zone, which almost sucks everyone into it, but Gohan gets angry and reveals enormous hidden power. He blasts Garlic Jr. into the Dead Zone, sealing him inside.

Five years after the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, an alien called Raditz visits Earth and reveals that Goku is a Saiyan like him, sent to Earth as an infant. Raditz tries to recruit Goku, but he refuses to cooperate with the Saiyans' ruthless ways, and fights back. When Goku gets killed, God accompanies him to King Enma, the judge of the dead, and asks him if Goku may be permitted to go see Kaiō-sama. While Goku goes off to train with Kaiō, God trains several Earthlings in preparation for a fight against two more Saiyans that are headed towards Earth. Piccolo fights these Saiyans too, who note that Piccolo is a Namekian. God wonders if the creation of Dragon Balls is something that happened on Planet Namek as well, which is where the surviving Earthlings go to look after Piccolo and God get killed. They use God's old spaceship to get there and find that Planet Namek does have its own set of Dragon Balls, which are eventually used to bring God back to life.

In an anime-exclusive story arc, Garlic Jr. escapes from the Dead Zone due to the Planet Makyō approaching Earth and increasing his power. He seals God and Mister Popo into little flasks, and pours the Aqua Mist down from God's Temple onto the world below. This turns almost everyone on Earth into members of the Demon Clan, although Gohan and a few others manage to avoid this fate. Piccolo pretends to get infected so that he can get close to Garlic Jr. and snatch the flasks containing God and Popo from him. They are freed and try to make their way to the bottom of the Temple, so that they can pour the Super God Water onto the Earth to turn everyone back to normal. In order to do this they have to enter the God Sage Realm, though, where the spirits of the previous Gods dwell. These spirits attack God, who entrusts Popo to pour the Super God Water down. The previous Gods stop attacking, and God and Popo make their way back outside, where Garlic Jr. has once again opened the Dead Zone. Gohan blasts Planet Makyō and causes it to explode, and the weakened Garlic Jr. ends up in the Dead Zone again.

A time traveler from the future named Trunks arrives with a warning that artificial humans will soon plague the Earth, and all the powerful fighters train for three years in preparation. They easily overpower the first two artificial humans that appear, but the ones that follow are too much for them. In desperation, Piccolo visits God hoping to recombine with him, but God says there may be no need. These artificial humans do not seem to be as evil as the ones in Trunks' timeline. God soon notices the appearance of a terrifying monster, however, and concludes he must grant Piccolo's request after all. God thanks Mister Popo for his long years of service, and becomes one with Piccolo permanently. Earth's Dragon Balls stop working, until the Namekian Dende reactivates them and becomes Earth's new God.
