Summary

Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks are perplexed to see Zamasu standing alongside Goku Black, who was supposed to be Zamasu inside Goku's body.

Back in the present, Bulma informs Beerus that Goku and the others have already left for the future, and questions why there are two Zamasus. Shin explains that if the Zamasu that is inside Goku's body is from their world, then there would logically also have to be a separate Zamasu there in Trunks' world.

Vegeta pieces everything together as the two Zamasus wonder why these people have appeared in this timeline. Zamasu explains that there are no major obstacles in the five parallel worlds, but is perplexed to see a sixth Time Ring inside his box. Vegeta remarks that his past self was probably killed by Beerus, meaning there is now another world without Zamasu; Black finally concludes that these guys must have come from the past. After a bit of posturing back and forth, Vegeta blasts in on the offensive, but is ultimately cornered by Black, who has gotten stronger yet again. Black initially thought that simply stealing Goku's body would be enough, but he could not satisfactorily transform into Super Saiyan, let alone Super Saiyan Blue. Realizing this is what led him to discovering the Saiyans' trademark. Trunks wonders if he means how Saiyans power up after recovering from near-death experiences…

Shin explains that Black has likely been using this trait in conjunction with Zamasu's healing ability to continuously power-up.

Vegeta continues to get pummeled, prompting Goku to offer him a senzu. Vegeta and Black trade blows, but Black clearly has the upper hand. Trunks figures that his father and Goku are no longer able to exploit the Saiyan trait of powering-up due to their constant training. Zamasu heals Black to full strength, powering him up even more, to a level these lower beings could never dream of. Black transforms yet again, this time with pink hair (as Goku observes). Zamasu notes that unlike the others, when gods power up to this level, their hair must become pink instead of blue. To go along with the existing naming conventions, Black suggests the name "Super Saiyan Rosé" for his new form.

Goku and Vegeta, rather than teaming up, decide to split the fights: Vegeta will continue against Black, while Goku takes on Zamasu. As Goku's battle seems to be going a little too well, Trunks thinks that something is wrong. When Goku knocks back Zamasu's own levitating debris, the god is impaled… but, laughing all the while, Zamasu simply removes the broken pole while his body heals back to normal. Zamasu has not only destroyed the Super Dragon Balls, but used them one last time to wish for immortality. Zamasu telekinetically rips the senzu away from Goku and obliterates them in his hand. Zamasu exploits these powers against Goku while Black whales away on Vegeta, who collapses to the ground unconscious.

Trunks screams for them to retreat, while Black mocks him for helping him power up all this time. Desperate for a way out, Trunks yells for Goku and Mai to close their eyes as he unleashes a Taiyō-ken on Zamasu and Black. Trunks and the others escape underground, trying to work out a strategy. Goku thinks back to how the turtle sage and his master were able to seal up an awful villain in a rice cooker: the Mafūba! Maybe they can seal these bad guys away, too! Trunks says they should hurry back to the past to learn this technique.

Black is unable to sense the Saiyans since they are able to reduce their energy. Smirking, though, Black is able to hone in on Mai's ki signature, and teleports away with Zamasu. The gods see hooded figures sneaking off, but it is a decoy: Mai jumps out with her shotgun and a bunch of mannequins, while Trunks jumps in from behind with a surprise sword attack, impaling Zamasu yet again.

Off in the distance, Goku apologizes to Trunks for leaving him behind to fight alone again, departing in the time machine with Vegeta.

Continuity

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • This is the first time that Goku sees Zamasu in the manga. In the anime, due to Black’s short travel back in time to the main timeline, Whis suspected that his ki was somehow related to Zamasu. When he goes to the Universe 10 Kaiōshin Realm to investigate his suspicions, he takes Beerus and Goku with him, so Goku sees Zamasu before he ever travels to the future.
  • In the manga, Zamasu and Black intend to eradicate mortals from all timelines. This intention is never stated in the anime.
  • Goku Black’s strength is very different in the anime and the manga. In the anime, he seems to be more or less in full control of Goku’s body from the start. In the manga, however, he seems unable to bring all of its power to the surface (in a manner reminiscent of when Ginyu stole Goku’s body in the Namek arc), being initially unable to transform beyond the first stage of Super Saiyan (a form that he never shows in the anime at all). However, he uses Zamasu’s healing powers (which are also never shown in the anime) to make frequent use of the Saiyans’ near-death power-ups in order to (in his own words) “further merge his godly heart with his Saiyan body”. This ultimately lets him reach the power of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.
    • Shin theorizes that it might be precisely to make use of having another Zamasu to help him that Black changed timelines.
    • Black later states that he only let Trunks live this long precisely so that he could damage Black enough to make use of these near-death power-ups.
    • Since Future Zamasu does not show healing abilities in the anime, Black somehow gets stronger without near-death power-ups, as seen in episodes 51 and 56. In fact, Goku Black first displays the ability to transform into Super Saiyan Rosé before he is even joined by Future Zamasu at the end of Episode 56.
  • After seeing that Vegeta doesn’t power up, even after eating a senzu, Trunks theorizes that he and Goku might not get stronger from being brought back from the brink of death anymore due to having used that ability to its fullest.
    • If that is the case, then Goku Black should also have been unable to get any stronger after recovering from near-fatal injuries considering that he is using Goku's body.
  • This had already been speculated about amongst the fandom ever since Episode 56 aired on 22 October 2016, but Zamasu states it outright in this chapter: due to Black being an actual deity and not just a mortal cloaked in divine ki, his hair becomes light pink instead of blue when he reaches the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan level.
  • Zamasu states that he chose to become immortal because, had he chosen to inhabit another body like Black did, he would lose his godly powers, such as healing and telekinesis (which aren’t shown in the anime).
  • In this chapter, Goku thinks of using the Mafūba against Zamasu. In the anime, however, it is Piccolo that comes up with the idea after Goku and Vegeta are back in the main timeline.
    • Despite only having heard of it very superficially in Chapter 182 of the original manga, in this chapter, Goku seems particularly knowledgeable about the Mafūba. It is, however, possible that he might have been told more details about the technique in the time since then.
  • Mai also helps everyone escape back to the past in Episode 57 with the help of Trunks, the difference being that, in the anime, this is already the second time they retreat back to their timeline. They use this "extra" escape to recover from their injuries because Goku forgot to bring senzu.

Notes

"Capsule Corporation" is spelled correctly in this chapter.
  • The “Cupsule Corp.” misspelling from Chapter 16 has been corrected in this chapter.
  • Goku Black's Super Saiyan Rosé (超サイヤ人ロゼ) form is given extra shading in the manga, just like Goku and Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue forms, to differentiate it from regular Super Saiyan in the standard black-and-white edition of the manga.
  • The Taiyō-ken (太陽拳, literally, "Fist of the Sun"), first shown off by Tenshinhan during the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, temporarily blinds anyone who does not shield their eyes. In this chapter, Goku is surprised to learn that Trunks knows the technique. Trunks responds that Gohan taught it to him, though we as readers/viewers have never actually seen Gohan use the technique, either (in any timeline).
  • The Mafūba (魔封波, literally, "Demon Sealing Wave") was first shown during the battle against Demon King Piccolo. The Turtle Hermit explains that his master, Mutaito, used the technique to seal the demon away in a rice cooker. The Mafūba can, however, claim the life of its caster if there is is too much of a gap between their strength and that of the enemy being sealed, so The Turtle Hermit died in an unsuccessful attempt to seal Demon King Piccolo. Tenshinhan, on the other hand, practiced the technique in order to accomplish what the Turtle Hermit hadn't managed to, but ultimately never managed to see the fruits of his labor, due to having realized too late that he had damaged the rice cooker he intended to use as a seal. Earth's God later attempted to use the technique on Piccolo Jr. during the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, but Piccolo used a "Reverse Mafūba" to seal God instead.
