"Ultra Instinct" is both a power and a state[note 2]

Ultra Instinct debuted...

Name

"Ultra Instinct" as an official English language translation of 身勝手の極意 (Migatte no Goku'i) is a compromise that attempts to succinctly convey the underlying meaning, at the expense of not being quite as descriptive as the original Japanese. The "Ultra Instinct" name translation debuted with the international simulcast of Dragon Ball Super episode 110 in which the "Sign" version of the form first debuted.

Omen vs. Sign: Name was written out in merchandise[1] and within Dokkan Battle[2] around the time that the form debuted in the TV series without having anything appended to its title at the time; that would come teased in episode 116 (named 逆転の兆し!身勝手の極意が大爆発!!).

Production

The debut of Akira Toriyama's character design for Son Goku's final/mastered version of Ultra Instinct in the April 2018 issue of V-Jump[3]

In an interview published online accompanying the release of the first Dragon Ball Super manga collected edition in April 2016, Toyotarō asked Akira Toriyama why it was that "Super Saiyan Blue" specifically had blue hair, to which Toriyama responded:[4][note 3]

『神と神』が赤だったので、『復活の「F」』は青にしよう」と、それだけ(笑)。…いや、本当は白にしようかなーって思ってたんですけど、「次の敵」と色が被ったので、それはまた別の機会に…と思って(笑)

In Battle of Gods it was red, so I figured for Resurrection 'F' I should go with blue. That's all. (laughs) Well, actually I was thinking about having it be white, but then it would color-clash with the "next enemy"... so I figured I should save it for another occasion. (laughs)
— Akira Toriyama

The name of "Ultra Instinct" (身勝手の極意 Migatte no Goku'i), its back-story, and it design were provided to the Toei Animation staff for the Tournament of Power in response to direction and requests from the production staff; this resulted in the Toei staff further developing a transitional version of "Ultra Instinct" called "Ultra Instinct: Sign":[5]

Producer Satoru Takami: Toriyama-sensei had given us the word "Ultra Instinct" and its backstory and design, so we made Goku and Jiren's fight the main event for that episode, with "Ultra Instinct: Sign" appearing, too.

Series Director Ryōta Nakamura: As we decided on the scenario's course of events and reported to Toriyama-sensei, he came back with Ultra Instinct as a power-up for Goku. Toriyama-sensei thought it up as a completely different power-up from Super Saiyan.

Though Ultra Instinct was not conceived of until the Tournament of Power, in the lead up to its formal reveal that arc, its underlying concepts were regularly teased and tied back to previous conversations in the original serialization as well as in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'[6][note 4], with chapter 39 of Toyotarō's Dragon Ball Super manga explicitly referencing back to conversations Goku had under his previous mentors (Karin, Mr. Popo and God, North Kaiō).[7]

Ultra Instinct was first teased in a key visual released to promote the Universe Survival arc's upcoming "Tournament of Power" featuring Goku standing with his back to the reader with a text splash stating "A Divine Technique, Perfected" (神の御技ここに極まれり[note 5]).[9]

The form was teased again in the October 2017 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine with a new key visual featuring Goku staring forward[10] (an image that would be used heavily in future marketing, including as the cover art for the "Limit Break x Survivor" CD single).

Following the previous week with One Piece receiving a full hour time block, Dragon Ball Super episodes 109 and 110 aired as their own special full hour presentation 08 October 2017.[11] In the lead up to these two broadcasts, an extensive promotional campaign took place focused around a "collaboration image" of Luffy and Son Goku.[12] Alongside the image's distribution to media[13][14] and a new preview video, the official Dragon Ball Super Twitter account held a contest where those who retweeted the post with the specials' collaboration image had a chance at winning a poster signed by Masako Nozawa (Son Goku, et al.) and Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy, Kuririn). In addition, Toei Animation and Dragon Ball Super producer Hiroyuki Sakurada provided a special comment to accompany the announcements:

History's mightiest "Tournament of Power" is being held in Dragon Ball Super to decide the fate of all the universes. Starting in October, it at last reaches a turning point as Goku finally faces off with his strongest opponent, Jiren. From there on out it will truly be a continuous run from Goku and co.'s big battle to the climax. And to kick it off, Dragon Ball Super will be airing a "1-Hour Autumn Special" on October 8th. Unprecedented surprises are in store, so please look forward to it. Plus, with Dragon Ball Super powering up in this super-climax and One Piece heating up in celebration of its 20th anniversary, a collaboration between these two great Sunday anime is finally becoming a reality. It's a dream visual symbolizing the two great anime, as if Goku and Luffy were on an adventure together!
— Hiroyuki Sakurada

The design of Son Goku in the "final" or "mastered" version of Ultra Instinct was revealed globally 21 February 2018 in a multimedia blitz including an announcement of the character coming as paid downloadable content within "Extra Pack 2" for the video game Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2[8], coming as a playable card/character within the "Universe Mission 1" expansion to the arcade game Super Dragon Ball Heroes, and with Akira Toriyama's character design also shown off in that day's April 2018 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine[3].[note 6]

Notes

  1. This is one of those technicalities, where the gods are aware of this state and Angels are technically in this state all of the time, as relayed to Vegeta by Beerus in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 69 (saying that the angels are in a migatte state; i.e., "moving of their own accord" and/or "selfish", with Beerus likely jabbing as a double entendre and meaning both). In terms of a more general display of the form known to viewers/readers at the time, Goku was the first one shown to independently reach this state.
  2. "Ultra Instinct" itself is specifically called out as both a "power" (力) and a "state" (境地) in Dragon Ball Super episode 110.
  3. Though this interview takes place at a point where Dragon Ball Super is already well underway, Toyotarō and Akira Toriyama are discussing a decision that would have been made during the production of the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ’F’ theatrical film, when Dragon Ball Super in all likelihood had yet to be conceived/approved/underway. As such, the "next enemy" that Toriyama is referencing is likely Freeza in that film, who primarily goes between his white "final" form to his new "Golden" form. While it is true that Zamasu would have white hair in the "Future Trunks arc" of Dragon Ball Super, again, it is unlikely that Toriyama would be referencing this character, who would not go on to debut for another full year, and considering that Resurrection 'F' was conceived as a singular film, not as part of a subsequent, ongoing television series.
  4. Whis' lines about body parts reacting on their own, in retrospect, reads like a foreshadowing of Ultra Instinct, where his description (体のあらゆるところが勝手に判断して行動できるようになればいいんですがこれがとても難しい) matches the 勝手 (katte) used in 身勝手 (migatte)'s central pun.
  5. A bit of a play on words as well, with 神の御技 actually meaning "god's work"
  6. As per usual, despite all efforts from the official parties to debut this information and these designs together on the same day, much of it leaked out on February 17th.
