"Ultra Ego" is a transformation (thus far) exclusive to Vegeta. The stage features a pronounced aura... Ultra Ego debuted at the end of Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 74, released 21 July 2021 in the September 2021 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine, with its name being given the following chapter.

Name

Called Waga-mama no Goku'i in Japanese,[1] the stage is coined as "Ultra Ego" in Viz's English translation of the Dragon Ball Super manga.[2]

Vegeta's naming scheme is a direct reference to the "Ultra Instinct" phrasing in Japanese (Migatte no Goku'i), which Vegeta mentions by name in the original dialog before directly naming Ultra Ego.[note 1] The Migatte of Migatte no Goku'i, while used for the pun of its literal kanji (which can be read as "body acting on its own"), is also a phrase meaning "selfish" (albeit little-used in comparison to just katte nowadays); this is in a sort of “thoughtless” sense, not caring how your actions affect others, as opposed to a demanding or greedy sense. Vegeta's form name is a one-upping of the "Ultra Instinct" which Goku uses: Goku is just thoughtless, whereas Vegeta is getting his way.

Shueisha's official Spanish release (in conjunction with MediaBang, Inc. and Guardian Angels Media) uses "Megainstinto" ("Mega Instinct").[3] Unlike the English language release, the Spanish version includes a translator's note directly on the page above the panel:

*MIGATTE NO GOKUI VS WAGAMAMA NO GOKUI: AMBOS SON QUASI-SINÓNIMOS PERO TENIENDO EN CUENTA LAS DEFINICIONES, GOKU ES MÁS EGÓLATRA Y VEGETA EGOCÉNTRICO.

Notes

  1. Though Vegeta specifically calls out "Ultra Instinct" (Migatte no Goku'i) by name in Japanese, in Viz's English translation the name is not present and is instead adapted to explain how Goku's body has "a mind of its own," likely as a way to describe what "Ultra Instinct" actually is, since its official English name is not as descriptive as its original Japanese name.
