Summary

Fifteen minutes remain in the Tournament of Power, and only twelve fighters remain. From Universe 6: Kafla, the fusion of Kale and Caulifla. From Universe 7: Son Gohan, No. 17, the Turtle Hermit, Son Goku, and Vegeta. From Universe 11: Toppo, Dispo, Casserale, and Jiren. Kafla faces Gohan, while Vegeta fights Toppo. Shin hopes that they can hang in and run out the clock; Universe 7 could win simply for having the most fighters remaining. Beerus thinks they are too stupid to think of that. Whis also finds it unlikely they will win so easily, just because the stakes are so high at this point.

Kafla and Gohan fight evenly, but when Kafla manages to pin Gohan down by standing on his waist, she asks him if he does not want to go Super Saiyan for this, if he even can. Gohan grabs her legs and tosses her off of him, telling her that he does not use Super Saiyan anymore, because he does not need it. He relies on his own strength rather than his Saiyan blood. In the stands, Piccolo observes that, though Gohan barely had time to regain his battle sense before the tournament, but he has gotten stronger than ever over the course of this fight. Kuririn wonders whether he could surpass Goku if he quit his day job, but No. 18 tells him no one is going to be quitting their day job. Kuririn nervously agrees.

Goku is impressed as he watches Gohan and Kafla fight, and suggests that since Gohan has it under control, they can resume their fight. Jiren tells him that he still has no chance. Vegeta and Toppo also continue to fight, and Vegeta admits that Toppo is stronger than he looks. Toppo reminds him that he is a candidate to be a God of Destruction, and powers up further. He cannot afford to lose to a lesser being. Vegeta is frustrated that he still has that much power in reserve, but he keeps fighting.

No. 17 congratulates Muten Rōshi for hanging in so long, and he says he is not going to be outdone by all them young people just yet. No. 17 tells him that he cannot read his ki, but assumes he is pretty strong, and Rōshi says he might be, and suggests they take down Dispo and Casserale together. 17 agrees that they seem to be the weakest guys left, and Dispo is insulted. Freeza watches them take off, and decides to take it easy for a while and recover some of his strength. Beerus complains that he is slacking, but Whis reminds him that Freeza wants to win too, and taking a rest while he has the chance is not a bad idea. Beerus shifts his complaints to Champa; he still thinks that the Potara trick should have been against the rules. Champa is downcast and sweating, though. Even Frost looks nervous, and Hit's eyes are closed. Beerus asks where the comeback is, and Whis points out that Gohan's fight with Kafla seems to be coming to an end.

Kafla observes that Gohan is looking pretty beat-up, and he returns the compliment. Kafla seems to realize that she has lost; she could not even beat a single Saiyan from his universe. But she accepts her fate. Huwa beings to panic, and Champa is forlorn. He tells Vados that he appreciates everything she has done for him, and she is taken aback. In the arena, Gohan tells Kafla that she is pretty strong, and he is at his limit too. She asks if he is ready to end this. Together, they attack, and with a double-punch, they knock each other out of the arena. Goku yells after Gohan, and Gohan apologizes, but he is sure his father can handle the rest. He appears in the stands with Universe 7, while Caulifla and Kale appear with the Universe 6 group. Beerus compliments Gohan on a job well done, and Champa congratulates Caulifla and Kale. Then he turns to Beerus, draws in a deep breath, and informs him that this does not mean he has lost, and he should not get the wrong idea! Then, the Great Priest announces that Universe 6 will be erased, and they disappear, leaving Vados alone in the stands. Beerus complains that Champa was a jerk to the bitter end.

Meanwhile, Goku continues to attack Jiren to no effect. After several failed attempts, Jiren punches him in the gut, knocking him across the arena. Jiren tells him this is a waste of time; if this is all Goku has, then it is time to end it. Goku insists this is not his limit; there is another wall he needs to overcome. Goku powers up again, saying it might wreck his body, but he needs more power. Beerus wonders what he is doing; Whis explains that he is drawing deep from his reserves for a temporary boost even though it might damage his body. Tenshinhan asks if it is the same principle as Kaiō-Ken, and Kuririn wonders if that will even work after all this time. Goku attacks, and Whis says that Goku was mistaken; this was not what he needed to overcome his wall. Jiren tells Goku that power gained by destroying the body is difficult to wield properly, and suggests he made the same mistake that Kale did earlier. Then he punches Goku away. Whis thinks things are looking bad for Goku; the wall he needs to overcome might be beyond him at this point.

But the Elder Kaiōshin is watching a different fight: Muten Rōshi is about to win his fight against Casserale! The Pride Trooper is frustrated that he cannot hit the old man; his device indicates that his battle power is very low. Rōshi tells him that he should not rely on gadgets like that; they tend to miss what is under the surface. Casserale tells him to be quiet and throws a punch, but Rōshi grabs his arms and tosses him out of the arena, telling him to learn to watch his step. No. 17 pauses from his fight with Dispo to congratulate him on his win.

Meanwhile Goku is losing to Jiren and starting to lose hope, so Rōshi heads over to give his old student some advice. Jiren is surprised to learn that this old man is Goku's teacher. Rōshi asks Goku what strength means to him. He says that even Super Saiyan Blue cannot keep up with Jiren, so he needs more power. Rōshi asks who taught him that. Vegeta? Freeza? No, power is not what he needs. Rōshi reminds Goku that in the Turtle Hermit School, they do not master martial arts to win fights; they do it to conquer themselves. He asks Goku to remember what all of his masters have taught him. Goku recalls Karin teaching him that he ran out of breath quickly because he wasted too much movement. He recalls Mr. Popo teaching him to be tranquil as the heavens and quick as lightning. He recalls Kaiō teaching him to train not only his body, but also his spirit. He recalls Whis teaching him that he must learn to fight without thinking, to allow his body to act and react on its own. Rōshi then asks Goku if he eats well, rests well, plays well, and learns well? Goku says he does not know about the learning part, so Rōshi offers to give him one last lesson: how to move well!

With that, Rōshi charges Jiren, and when Jiren moves to stop him with a punch, he dodges smoothly. He attacks, and though Jiren blocks him, Rōshi dodges the counterattack with a backflip. He continues to dodge, and Goku wonders what is going on. Beerus is alarmed, and asks Whis if those moves are... Whis confirms that there is a strong resemblance... but it is still a far cry from that technique. Beerus is relieved; he did not think that old man could master it. Whis says that even still, the old man has wisdom, and it is a similar principle. Goku asks Rōshi how he was moving like that, and the old man says that he may have talked big, but he still has a long way to go, too. He tells Goku to look in his heart, and he will find his answer there. He attacks Jiren one more time, but Jiren is done playing around. He knocks Rōshi out with a chop to the neck, causing him to fall out of the arena, appearing in the stands with Universe 7. Beerus is not too disappointed; he figured the old man would fall eventually. Whis says that though he did make it far, he left behind something even greater, telling Beerus to look at Goku. Something has changed.

Jiren mocks Goku for still having lessons to learn from his teacher; is he that inexperienced? Someone like Goku will never achieve perfection. Goku tells him that perfection is not something he wants. That would rob him of the pleasure of surpassing his limits. He tells Jiren that his master is as good a teacher as ever. Jiren attacks, and Goku rolls across the ground, landing a distance away. His friends in the stands are alarmed as Jiren continues to come after him. Goku says he was the worst student, and he never listened, but he got stronger thanks to that old man. And he is still Son Goku of the Turtle Hermit School!

Goku looks up at Jiren, and his appearance has changed. His eyes have turned gray with visible pupils. Jiren attacks, but Goku has disappeared and is standing some distance away. Jiren is astonished, and even Goku seems to be surprised. Beerus panics, asking Whis if that move was... Whis confirms. Kuririn asks them what they have been going on about, and Whis explains: it is the ultimate technique that dissociates the consciousness from the body, allowing its master to dodge any attack without thinking. It is called Ultra Instinct.

Jiren asks Goku if he has overcome his wall, and Goku tells him, probably. Vegeta has Toppo down, but he too is astonished at this new turn. Jiren tells Goku that he will meet his end in this state, since he has nowhere else to go. Goku agrees that it is time to settle their fight. In the stands, Kuririn anticipates their all-out battle while Beerus seethes that Goku managed Ultra Instinct before he did. Shin prays...to Goku, apparently. Jiren and Goku charge at each other, but just before Jiren's fist lands, Goku returns to his normal appearance. Whis notices the change before Goku fails to dodge the punch; it knocks him across the arena floor. Kuririn asks what happened, and Whis says it was apparently not the true Ultra Instinct. It is not a technique that is easily mastered, and it would seem that Goku merely tapped into it briefly. In other words, he is just getting started. Jiren warns Goku that a man with so little resolve will never be able to defeat him.

Continuity

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • In the manga, Kafla was the last Universe 6 warrior to be defeated. In the anime, however, Saonel and Pilina were the last, with both being defeated at the same time by Gohan and Piccolo.
  • In the anime, Vados sits next to the Universe 7 team as soon as Saonel and Pilina lose, not even waiting for the Omni-Kings to erase Universe 6.
  • In the anime, Goku is the one who defeats Kafla, not Gohan.
  • In the anime, instead of losing at the end of his battle with Kafla, Gohan lost by sacrificing himself to beat Dispo.
  • In the anime, Universe 3 lasted longer in the Tournament of Power than Universe 6.
  • In the anime, after Universes 7 and 11 were the only ones left, the Great Priest notices that the benches looked a little bare, so he decides to reduce their size and make all the teams sit together. This does not happen in the manga, where the size of the bench remains the same for the duration of the tournament.
  • The anime prominently and frequently features Goku using a combination of Super Saiyan Blue and Kaiō-Ken. Despite the technique being completely absent from the manga, in this chapter, Goku forcefully tries to increase his ki while in Super Saiyan Blue to beat Jiren, even if it might damage his body afterwards. Tenshinhan comments that it is essentially the same principle as the Kaiō-Ken.
  • In this chapter, the Turtle Hermit re-recites the motto of Turtle School: “move well, learn well, play well, eat well and rest well”, first spoken in Chapter 31 of the original manga. This time, however, the order of the motto is switched around, with special emphasis put on the part most relevant to the events of this chapter: “move well”.
  • In the manga, the Turtle Hermit uses a technique similar to Ultra Instinct. Despite this, the power gap between him and Jiren is too vast and he ends up defeated nonetheless.
  • The way Goku awakens Ultra Instinct is completely different in the manga and the anime. In the anime, Goku tries to beat Jiren using a Genki-Dama. Jiren, however, easily pushes the massive attack back at Goku. Faced with certain death, Goku unconsciously entered a state where his body moved by itself. In the manga, however, the Turtle Hermit makes Goku remember the teachings of all the masters he has ever had, namely Whis, and shows him that it is possible to bridge a large gap in power through masterful use of your movement in battle. Therefore, in the manga, Goku attained Ultra Instinct through a conscious decision on his part, rather than the purely instinctive one displayed in the anime.
  • The Turtle Hermit lasts a lot longer in the manga’s version of the Tournament of Power than he does in the anime. In the anime, he is the third fighter from Universe 7 to drop out, after Kuririn and Tenshinhan. In the manga, however, he is the sixth, lasting more than Kuririn, Tenshinhan, No. 18, Piccolo and even Gohan.
    • In the anime, the Turtle Hermit decides to voluntarily drop out after having exhausted all his energies fighting Frost. In the manga, however, he is defeated by none other than Jiren himself.
  • As shown in this chapter, the first time Goku used Ultra Instinct, he did so only momentarily. In the anime, however, he stayed in the state for quite a long time, long enough to easily blow Dispo and Toppo away and to even give Jiren a run for his money before he slipped out of it.
