Summary
Goku is down on the battlefield, but Jiren still stands. Whis tells everyone that what they saw earlier was a sign of Goku awakening to Ultra Instinct. Beerus complains that Goku is always screwing up. On the battlefield, Vegeta complains that Goku has one-upped him yet again. As he rages about his life's fate and his struggles, Toppo sees an opportunity to attack, but before he can land a punch, Vegeta powers up in his frustration, sending Toppo flying out of the arena. He lands on a small piece that was broken off in earlier battles.
Meanwhile, Vegeta seems to have awakened a new level of Super Saiyan Blue; Beerus notices that his aura has changed. Drunk on his new power, he attacks Jiren with a knee to the head. Everyone is astonished as Vegeta seems to give Jiren a run for his money, even managing to kick him into the air. When Vegeta punches Jiren back down toward the arena floor, Jiren flips and lands on all fours. He wipes his mouth from the earlier punch, and looks as Vegeta landing behind him. Still down, Goku seems shocked by Vegeta's sudden show of strength.
Jiren recalls Vegeta's name, and Vegeta claims to be honored. Jiren asks Vegeta if he was concealing his power when he was fighting Toppo, but Vegeta explains that Saiyans evolve as they fight. Jiren asks whether he is going for Goku's strange power, but Vegeta says he has given up hope of that; the technique does not suit him, and he does not like the idea of learning from anyone. He has never had a master, and he has no memories of his father teaching him the fundamentals. He is a prodigy who honed his talents in solo training. As he witnessed Goku's power, he momentarily lost sight of what makes him unique. He will aim for the top in his own way, and Kakarrot can have his Ultra Instinct.
Vegeta attacks, and Kuririn thinks that Jiren is losing ground. Whis agrees that Ultra Instinct does not suit Vegeta, and thinks that this might be the right path for him. Vegeta asks Jiren how many times he has put his life on the line in battle. Unlike his teammates, Vegeta has risked his life time after time; while they were playing in tournaments, he was fighting thousands of battles out in space. He has been on the edge of death more times than him, but Saiyans are a mighty warrior race and Jiren should not underestimate their prince! Jiren concedes that Vegeta has fought harder than anyone except for Goku in his brief moment of ascension, but...
Faster than sight, Jiren takes Vegeta out with a blow to the back, telling Vegeta not to make the mistake of thinking that he can beat him. Stubborn, Vegeta tries to attack again, but Jiren easily has the upper hand. Jiren tells Vegeta that he puts his life on the line in every battle, and no action is wasted, even when his opponent is weak. That is what how master taught him. Whis appraises the situation and declares that Vegeta's current strength is not enough for Jiren, and Kuririn is distressed.
Meanwhile, Toppo is still hanging out on his rock, frustrated that they had to rely on Jiren in the end. On another rock, Freeza tells him that it is pathetic to leave the fate of one's universe in another's hands. And while he takes no joy in crushing a weakened opponent, as the Emperor of Evil, he is not acquainted with fair play. Freeza jumps and kicks Toppo to a rock further from the arena. Again and again and again, until Toppo is confined to a tiny floating piece. Dispo notices what is going on, and abandons his fight with No. 17 to assist his friend, hopping along the trail of rocks until he reaches him. Thrilled to have lured Dispo into his trap, Freeza hops quickly back to the arena and destroys the path, leaving Dispo and Toppo stranded.
Toppo tells Dispo to leave him and hop back to the arena, but Dispo tells him he is weak from fighting that "brat"[a] earlier, and he cannot jump that far. Freeza takes aim at their rock, cutting its size in half. He is enjoying this torture exercise, but No. 17 tells him that is tasteless and he should just eliminate them. Freeza concedes, and takes aim again, so in desperation, Dispo calls out to Jiren, who is preparing to finish Vegeta. When Jiren turns his attention briefly to Dispo, Goku teleports in to grab Vegeta, disappearing before Jiren's blast lands and reappearing behind a small rock wall. Goku tells Vegeta it is best to retreat for now, or they will be defeated very quickly.
Dispo continues to call to Jiren while Freeza and No. 17 watch near the edge. Suddenly, Jiren appears between them, knocking them both aside. Dispo holds out his hand, apologizing but asking again for help. Jiren tells them that he will finish this fight alone, and that they should watch from the bench. Their platform collapses, and both are eliminated.[b] They appear in the stands, and Dispo is bummed that they were only getting in Jiren's way. Kuririn is happy that Jiren is the only opponent left, but Vermoud thinks that Jiren is all they need.
Freeza thinks that Jiren is a bit too cocky. Jiren seems surprised that he is still there; he did not seem to be all that powerful. Freeza says he must not have seen his golden form; he likes to hide his strength when he can, but he concedes that the time has come to go all out. He transforms, and attacks. Beerus wonders aloud if Freeza can turn the tables, but Whis does not think so (and neither did Beerus). Whis is however impressed that Freeza continues to fight, knowing he has no chance. Freeza tells Jiren not to be too hasty; this is far from his full power. He spares a glance for the time pillar, which has just dropped another notch. Jiren realizes Freeza is trying to buy time, so he calls his bluff and moves to eliminate him, but Freeza manages to dodge, while another chunk of the arena flies away. Freeza realizes this is part of Jiren's strategy.
Jiren tells Freeza that it is over, and he moves to strike, but No. 17 blocks him, telling Freeza he did not expect him to be the type to try to buy time. Jiren tosses both of them away, nearly eliminating them, but they land on a small piece of floating arena. 17 tells Freeza to let him handle the next part. In the stands, Piccolo wonders about their chances with Goku and Vegeta retreating and Freeza not measuring up, but then No. 17 jumps back into the arena, attacking Jiren. Jiren easily knocks him down, and Kuririn realizes that no matter how strong he has gotten, he is still no match for Jiren.
No. 17 shouts out to No. 18 and Kuririn, asking for a favor: he has a wife and three kids living near Monster Island; can they look after them? Kuririn asks him whether that means what he thinks it means. No. 17 says that the oldest two children are adopted but still growing, and they are at that age when they are a lot of work. Kuririn tries to plead with him, but No. 18 agrees; she is used to dealing with wild children. No. 17 thanks her and flies back toward Jiren. Beerus wonders what he is doing. No. 17 asks Jiren if he is fighting for his universe's survival, or if there is a wish he wants granted. Jiren tells him both. No. 17 says he is giving up on the wish, and Jiren tells him that he will achieve neither of his goals. 17 apologizes, and says he will not lose his universe, his planet, or his family. He self-destructs, blinding everyone in the arena momentarily and taking out fully half of the fighting stage.
The Great Priest throws up a barrier to protect the Omni-Kings and their attendants from the flying rocks, and remarks to himself that this is bit of a problem. Everyone is shocked, and Kuririn is grieved for 17's wife and children. Piccolo observes that it gets worse... Jiren remains, unharmed. Kuririn cannot believe 17 gave his life for nothing; Shin cringes, while Vermoud seems amused that 17 would have thought that would work. The Great Priest asks the Omni-Kings what they should do. There are no rules about self-destruction, so he suggests that they not penalize Universe 7 this one time. The Omni-Kings agree, so the Great Priest calls for the tournament to continue.
Their hiding place destroyed, Vegeta and Goku face Jiren. Vegeta scoffs at the wasted self-destruction as Jiren approaches them. Jiren tells them that he is not pleased that one of their number has died, and since they cannot do anything to change their situation, he would prefer they end this now so that he does not have to witness such things. Kuririn prays to Goku, begging him to pull through like he always does. Goku says that No. 17 turned out to be a good guy, but getting mad about his death will not solve anything. And once again, he taps into the power of Ultra Instinct. Goku tells Jiren that he must keep growing, and he is done with letting people down. Jiren is ready for him.

Continuity
The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.
- Vegeta’s improvement on the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan transformation (frequently called Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan: Evolution in supplemental material) is a lot more muscular in the anime. In fact, its bulkiness is reminiscent of Super Saiyan Grade II.
- Vegeta states in this chapter that he has never had any master, and that even his father, King Vegeta, never taught him the basics of combat. Everything he achieved as a fighter, he did so by himself.
- Vegeta might be forgetting that he has a master at that very moment: Whis.
- In the anime, Dispo was defeated by Gohan, who sacrificed himself to beat him, whereas Toppo was defeated by Vegeta. In the manga, however, Freeza traps both of them on a fragment of the stage that was floating far away from the center. Being too tired to jump back to the center of ring by themselves, they ask Jiren for help. Jiren, however, chooses to do nothing and just tells them to watch the rest of the fight from the bench, saying that he will take care of the rest by himself. The crumbling fragment both of them were standing on then breaks apart, making them both fall to their defeats.
- Unlike in the anime, no matter how tattered up the fighters’ clothes were at the moment of their defeat, they are back to pristine condition as soon as the contestants fall off the stage and get transported to the bench. The fighters themselves are also apparently healed from any injuries.
- In the anime, roughly half of the ring had already been destroyed before No. 17 made his apparent sacrifice.
- In the anime, No. 18 seems to be a lot more troubled by No. 17’s apparent sacrifice. In the manga, however, she seemingly doesn’t care all that much, even when asked directly by No. 17 himself to take care of his family. Kuririn, on the other hand, is the one who is troubled in this version of the story, worried about what he is even going to say to No. 17’s family.
- It is later revealed in Chapter 42 that the reason No. 18 was so calm was because she could see that it was all an act on No. 17's part, going as far as saying: "What terrible acting".
- In the manga, the Great Priest seems a little hesitant as to what to do in cases where the contestant eliminates themselves. In the anime, however, he confidently states from the beginning that it will just be considered as if the fighter eliminated themselves, with no penalty to any other contestant.
