"Battle's End and Aftermath" is the forty-second chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was published in Japan in the January 2019 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 November 2018.

This chapter marks the end of the Universe Survival arc and the beginning of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc. There is a short interlude in between to acknowledge the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and the interstitial page following the chapter also touches on those events.

Summary

Universe Survival

As Jiren faces Goku and Vegeta on the battlefield, Cae prods Vermoud to tell them more about Gitchen's desire for Jiren to learn teamwork. Vermoud says that Jiren has used his strength and sense of justice to keep the peace in Universe 11, but he tends to carry this burden alone. He does not trust anyone else, and he does not appreciate the fact that he could find himself in a situation where he relies on others at any time. Markarita finds this surprising coming from Vermoud, but he says he is just parroting Gitchen. As a God of Destruction, he does not agree. Markarita points out that they were friends, but Vermoud says that was a long time ago.

Goku and Vegeta continue to harass Jiren, whose anger grows. He insists that it does not matter what they do; his power will overcome it all. Cae thinks that maybe Jiren never learned his lesson. Vermoud says Gitchen wanted him to figure it out on his own, and then calls him an idiot for leaving things undone and then dying. Markarita adds that she cannot revive him because he was killed by a demon. Vermoud says he still has faith, though...faith that Jiren can win this alone!

On the battlefield, Jiren powers up even more. Goku and Vegeta are surprised that he still has this much power, but Jiren informs them that he has no limits. Goku prepares a Kamehameha, and Vegeta prepares a Gamma Burst Flash. They both put the absolute last of their power into these techniques, and they fire together, but Jiren pushes through their attacks, and when the dust clears, he is standing there, ready to fire. He fires at Vegeta first, eliminating him. Then he tries to push Goku off the edge, too. Goku is sure that he is done for, but behind Jiren, Freeza is preparing his own blast. Vermoud and Cae are shocked; they forgot all about this guy. Freeza tells Goku to hold Jiren, and when Goku gets Jiren in a lock, Freeza fires. Jiren manages to push the blast back toward Freeza, but that was all part of Freeza's plan. Just as Jiren thinks he has won, he sees Freeza charging toward him. Freeza knocks Jiren and Goku out of the ring, though the force of his charge carries him out of the arena as well.

Everyone thinks that there is no one left in the arena, but then No. 17 emerges from underneath a rock, congratulating Freeza on the smooth execution of the plan. Goku congratulates Freeza too, and Freeza says that they prefer strategy to mindless brawling. The time runs out, and the Tournament of Power has concluded. The Omni-Kings loved the surprise finish, and the Great Priest agrees; no one could sense No. 17, so everyone thought he was dead! Kuririn asks No. 17 what happened to the self-destruct thing, and No. 17 says he would never do something like that, and Kuririn should have known that he cannot, since he is the one who wished for his bomb to be removed. No. 18 says it was an unconvincing act, but 17 tells her he was serious about the babysitting part; his job keeps him busy, so he might give her a call some time.

Jiren apologizes to his teammates for losing. Dispo tells him to have more faith in them; they are his allies. Vermoud says he is sorry that they cannot revive Gitchen, but Jiren says it is fine; he knows what he needs now, so Gitchen is not needed. Vermoud does not buy his stoicism, though; he thinks Jiren still blames himself for Gitchen's death, and he reminds Jiren that Gitchen would not want to be revived. The Great Priest comes over, and Vermoud realizes their time is up. And indeed, Universe 11 is erased. Goku is sad; he wanted to fight Jiren one-on-one.

The Great Priest declares Universe 7 the winner, and No. 17 immediately tells him to bring back the other universes. The Great Priest asks him to repeat himself. No. 17 tells him that is his wish—to bring back the others. Everyone seems surprised by this wish, and the Omni-Kings ask him if he is sure. Does he not want something for himself? He says he is sure, and asks if it is possible. The Great Priest smiles and assures him that Super Shenlong can grant any wish at all. The erased universes are restored. Vados tells Champa welcome back, and Vermoud asks Markarita what happened, so she offers to explain. The Great Priest tells Shin that 17's wish has elevated Universe 7's rank to third-from-last. Then he tells everyone to prepare to be transported back to their universes. Cabba waves to Vegeta, and Freeza smirks at a disgruntled Frost. The idol warriors of Universe 2 smile at each other, Damon grins, and Caulifla and Kale look happy. Hit's eyes are closed. Jiren promises Goku that they will meet again.

As they fly home,[a] Goku asks No. 17 why he changed his wish; did he not want a big ship? No. 17 says he just changed his mind; he did not want to let the little imps get away with that. Shin asks him if he means the Omni-Kings. Vegeta tells 17 that they have more ships than they know what to do with, and he is sure that Bulma will give him one; 17 is happy to hear this. Vegeta says it is a small price to pay for Earth's savior. Freeza reminds Goku of his promise, and Goku says he will fulfill his end of the bargain as soon as they can gather the Dragon Balls, but Whis has a better plan: he restores Freeza to life with his staff, telling Freeza it is a gift from Beerus. Beerus compliments him on his strategy. Freeza reminds them that he intends to go on doing evil things, but Goku says they will just beat him again when he does.

Everyone arrives at Capsule Corporation, Bulma welcomes everyone back, and Whis takes Freeza to one of his planets, while No. 17 returns to Monster Island. Goku and Vegeta reminisce about how strong Jiren was, and Beerus says that just goes to show how big the universes are. Goku says it is not just the universes; No. 17 is hanging out doing basically nothing on Earth, and he's still nearly as strong as they are. Bulma points out that, in fact, he has a steady job, unlike a couple of Saiyans she knows. Vegeta asks Goku why he had to bring that up; she is still mad at him for promising No. 17 a ship without asking her first, but Goku sticks his tongue out as he apologizes, and then he takes off, telling Vegeta they should train together some time. Vegeta is not amused that Goku chose this moment to escape. He offers to change Bra's diaper and heat up her milk.

Everything is back to normal on Earth and in the 12 universes, for a time... Of course, with Freeza revived, he is going to cause trouble. It is a tale for another time, but Goku and Vegeta battle Broli and emerge stronger than ever...

Galactic Patrol Prisoner

Some time later, Goku teleports to Capsule Corporation. When he arrives, Vegeta asks him where he has been. Goku asks if he wants to train, and Vegeta suggests they use the Gravity Room so as not to disturb the neighbors. While they spar, Vegeta asks what happened to Ultra Instinct, and Goku tells him he has not been able to do it since the Tournament of Power. Vegeta thinks this makes it a useless technique, but Goku says he just has to keep on training. Vegeta agrees that he should, since Vegeta will never fight side-by-side with him again. Goku says that is fine with him; he prefers to handle things alone anyway.

Just then, Bulma interrupts them on the intercom and asks them to come outside; she just got an urgent call from Mister Satan. Outside, they ask her what is going on, and she says she is not sure. A mysterious gang appeared at Satan's house and they're trying to kidnap Majin Boo. Vegeta finds this unbelievable, since Boo is pretty strong, and Goku wonders if they are dealing with new villains. Vegeta says he cannot sense any evil ki. Goku thinks they should go see what is happening, so he holds out his hand to Vegeta and prepares to teleport, but Vegeta tells him to go on; he can fly to Satan City in five seconds. Goku's feelings are hurt, but he goes.

Meanwhile, Satan helplessly yells at the intruders, trying to threaten them. Boo is asleep on a stretcher which is being loaded into a spaceship by strange aliens. Satan decides he has no choice; he pulls a gun from his shirt and fires. One of the strange beings pulls out his own ray gun quickly enough to neutralize the bullet from Satan's gun. Then he reminds Satan that they explained... At that moment, Goku arrives, and Satan is happy to see him. As Goku demands to know what they are doing and what they want, and whether they are really bad guys, Vegeta drops in, much to Satan's delight. Having heard Satan say their names, the alien with the ray gun asks if they are the Goku and Vegeta. Satan begs them to save Boo, and Goku says he will, attacking the aliens who are carrying the stretcher, knocking them all out. The alien with the ray gun says he has no choice. He appears behind Goku and zaps him, knocking him out. Satan and Vegeta are shocked, but before Vegeta can react, the alien appears behind him too. He apologizes and tells Vegeta that he will have to take a little nap. Vegeta is zapped, and he is out. Satan is distressed, but the ray gun guy orders his men to carry Goku and Vegeta onto the spaceship too. They can help, and he will explain everything to them at headquarters. For the first time, the Galactic Patrol insignia is visible on his uniform.

The spaceship departs Earth, and when Goku wakes up, Jaco is there. Goku asks what has been going on, and Jaco tells him he was out cold; their stun guns are just that powerful. Only then does Goku realize who he is talking to. Then Vegeta wakes up, and Jaco says he does not know why they were brought when all they really need is Majin Boo. Goku asks him where they are, and Jaco tells him they are at the headquarters for the super-elite Galactic Patrol. The ray-gun guy apologizes for roughing them up, but he did not have any choice at the time. Goku asks who he is, and another Patrolman explains that he is Merusu, the number one elite agent, in charge of 104 sectors. Jaco says that is a few more than he manages. Goku asks him how many he manages, and Jaco admits he only manages three. Vegeta wants to know what Merusu needs from Boo, if he is so elite, so Merusu explains. A dangerous criminal has escaped from the Galactic Prison, and in order to recapture him, they need help from Dai Kaiōshin, who was absorbed long ago by Majin Boo.[1]

Interstitial Page

Gogeta apologizes for making his battle with Broli a lot shorter, in a clear reference to the fact that the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly have been omitted from the manga continuity.

The interstitial page following this chapter in the ninth collected volume features Gogeta and Broli. Gogeta prepares to fire a blast at Broli, whom he seemingly just defeated, and says that he will make their battle a lot shorter.

Continuity

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • Despite Vermoud stating that he hated Gitchen’s “lenient” way of thinking, Markarita reveals that, despite all that, they were still best friends. Vermoud responds by simply saying: “It’s just an old story”.
  • Markarita states that those killed by demons, like Gitchen, cannot be revived, even with the power of divine figures such as themselves.
  • In the anime, Freeza, who clearly has a lot of trouble putting his faith in others, orders Goku to reiterate his promise to resurrect him after the tournament is over before accepting to team up to defeat Jiren. In the manga, however, Freeza seems to be much more trusting of Goku and just assumes from the start that he will keep his promise.
  • In the anime, when No. 17 blew himself up, he didn’t know whether he was going to survive or not. After reappearing on top of the stage, he stated that he just got lucky. In the manga, however, his apparent suicide attack was part of a coordinated plan between him and Freeza: he would pretend to blow himself up and then use the ensuing commotion to hide amongst the rubble. Since he does not have any ki, no one would be able to realize that he was still in play. Freeza would then team up with Goku to beat Jiren, even if it meant throwing the three of themselves out of the ring together. Risky plays like this become a lot more viable when Universe 7 is guaranteed to always have at least one contestant in play.
    • Freeza goes along with No. 17’s plan because, even if it meant that he himself would not win, at least Goku was not the one winning in the end.
    • Shortly after winning, No. 17 tells Kuririn that he couldn’t blow himself up even if he wanted to, since Kuririn himself wished to have his self-destruction device removed from his body (back in Chapter 418 of the original manga.
      • He also explains that his request that Kuririn and No.18 take care of his family was genuine… during times when he is busy at work, that is.
  • Vermoud posits that Jiren did not want to resurrect his master just because he wanted to be recognized by him, but also because Jiren blames himself for not being able to protect Gitchen from the demon that killed him. Vermoud then tells Jiren not to be so hard on himself, since Gitchen would not want to be resurrected anyway and that Jiren himself should know that in his heart. Jiren never replies and just stays silent the entire time.
  • In this chapter, No. 17 states his wish before the Great Priest summons Super Shenlong. In the anime, however, the Great Priest summons the dragon and only then does he ask for No. 17 to state his wish.
  • In the anime, the Great Priest states that the Omni-Kings predicted that the warrior left at the end of the tournament would have enough virtue to consider the erased universes. If he had instead used his wish in a selfish way, the Omni-Kings planned to erase “everything”, including the winning universe. This makes it seem like, in the anime, the entire tournament was nothing more than one big test of virtue. In the manga, however, the Omni-Kings did indeed intend to reduce the number of universes from the start, but apparently decided to go along with No. 17’s wish of just leaving everything as it was.
  • In the anime, the participants from the restored universes are revived back at their respective universes. In the manga, however, they are revived at the tournament benches where they were erased in the first place.
  • In the manga, the Great Priest states that No. 17’s wish raised the mortal level of Universe 7: it is now third place from the bottom.
    • This seemingly confirms that mortal levels have nothing to do with fighting strength, but instead with the overall purity of a given universe’s inhabitants’ hearts.
  • In the manga, Goku asks No. 17 why he decided to save the other universes instead of wishing for his cruiser, as he originally wanted. No. 17 replies that he changed his mind merely because he didn’t feel like “letting those pipsqueaks get away with whatever they want” (a turn of phrase that shocks Shin).
  • It had been heavily implied in the anime, but the manga confirms it: it was Bulma who gave No. 17 the cruiser he longed for. Vegeta states that they have many at Capsule Corporation and that Bulma should not mind all that much giving one to “the savior of all universes”.
  • In the anime, Whis resurrects Freeza while they are still in the tournament ring. In the manga, he does so on the way back to Capsule Corporation.
  • In the anime, Beerus seems embarrassed to admit to Freeza that did well in the tournament, with Whis having to be the one who relays those feelings instead. In the manga, however, Beerus says what he thinks directly to Freeza, seemingly not embarrassed at all.
Goku and Vegeta reenact the initial fighting poses from their very first bout.
  • The anime shows what the ten members of the Universe 7 team did after the tournament in a bit more detail:
    • No. 17, No. 18 and Kuririn came back to No. 17’s nature reserve, where Goten and Trunks had apparently taken care of a lot of poachers. Their clothes were dirty and battered, but Marron’s were immaculate - likely because she never fought any poachers herself.
    • Tenshinhan was seen rebuilding the village next to his dojo with the help of Chiaotzu (and presumably Bulma’s funding).
    • All the members of the Universe 7 team and the larger Dragon Ball cast in general were seen having a celebration at Capsule Corporation, not only for their victory in the Tournament of Power, but also for Bra’s birth. The only one missing was No. 17, who was in his (Capsule Corporation-branded) cruise ship.
    • Freeza is seen introducing himself to his new army.
    • Goku and Vegeta are seen training together, seemingly at the same place where they had their first battle (and even making the same initial fighting poses they did back then). Vegeta then asks Goku why does he not use Ultra Instinct. Goku responds that he cannot do it willingly and that he just happened to enter the state during the tournament due to being driven into a corner so many times.
      • This is in contrast to the manga, where Goku apparently has some control over when to enter Ultra Instinct (though not over how much time he can actually stay in the state).

Notes

  1. Though the Great Priest transported the other universes home directly, everyone from Universe 7 is shown flying home through space behind Whis without holding on to him, including Muten Rōshi, who cannot fly. When they arrive at Capsule Corporation, it appears to be in a manner consistent with Whis's flight ability.
