Shosa is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Shosa makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 96, broadcast on 25 June 2017 on Fuji TV, as a member of the Universe 4 team.

Biography

In the Tournament of Power, Shosa caught No. 18 off-guard with his specialty 'playing possum' technique, but then lost when No. 18 and Kuririn pushed him from the ring with their combo attack.[1]

Tournament of Power

Name

Shosa's name is likely derived from Zanthoxylum piperitum (山椒), a standard spice in Japan, known elsewhere as "Japanese pepper". It is most commonly used to flavor broiled eel dishes. The character name is a rearrangement of the katakana used to write sanshō, with the "n" syllable dropped and the "sa" moved to the end. This spice is also the basis for Sansho’s name pun in Dragon Ball Z Movie 1.[2]

Performance

Shosa is voiced by Masaya Takatsuka, the voice of the Great Priest. In the Tournament of Power, Takatsuka also gives his voice to Harmira of Universe 2, Chappil of Universe 9, and Dyrasen of Universe 10. In the FUNimation dub, Shosa is voiced by Brian Olvera in his first credited role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
