Damon is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Damon makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 119, broadcast on 10 December 2017 on Fuji TV, as a member of the Universe 4 team.

Biography

Damon is a bug person representing Universe 4 in the Tournament of Power. At the beginning of the tournament, it appears that the Universe 4 team only has eight members because Damon is too small to be noticed by the casual observer, and his teammate Gamisalas is invisible.[1] Both of them attack for the first time late in the tournament, after four universes have been erased.[2]

Gamisalas attacks first, eliminating Catopesra of Universe 3 before Gohan figures out how to expose him using smoke. With Gohan's help, Gamisalas is eliminated by Piccolo. When Damon attacks, Piccolo believes he is another invisible person, but the same tactics do not work, even though Damon cannot suppress his ki like Gamisalas. Piccolo attacks where he senses ki, but nothing is there, and after a short fight he is eliminated.

Damon attacks No. 17 next, pushing him toward the edge of the arena, but Goku catches him before he can be knocked out. Goku can sense Damon and tries to attack, but none of his punches land. Meanwhile No. 17, who is unable to sense ki, listens for Damon's movements. Before long, he figures it out: Damon is not invisible, but a small bug person; no one was able to hit him because they did not realize how small he was. With Damon exposed, Quitela reminds him of the consequences if he loses. He is their last fighter.

Goku tries to catch Damon in his hand, but Damon escapes, boasting that it does not matter if they know where he is. No. 17 fires a volley of small energy attacks at Damon, but none of them land. Tenshinhan observes that it is almost impossible to hit such a small target; the Turtle Hermit adds that they also do not want to accidentally crush and kill him. Goku having realized these things, is at a loss for what to do, but No. 17 points out that Damon does not have wings and must jump to attack. If they can prevent him from jumping, they can immobilize him and eliminate him. Goku thrice punches the ground to force Damon up, and No. 17 catches him inside a small barrier and kicks him out of the arena. Damon apologizes to Quitela, but Quitela knows they are about to be erased and takes out his anger on Damon by trying to crush him underfoot. The Omni-Kings tap out Damon on their GodPads, and Universe 4 is erased.[2]

Name

Damon's name is likely based on Cardamom (カルダモン), a spice made from the seeds of the tropical Asian plant, Elettaria cardamomum, of the ginger family. The spice is sometimes spelled "cardamon". The character name is taken directly from the katakana used to write "cardamom" in Japanese, with the first two syllables dropped.[3]

Production

Early in the broadcast of the Universe Survival arc, on 04 May 2017, fans discovered a profile for Damon in the source code for Toei Animation's dedicated website.[5] The profile does not correspond much with Damon's eventual depiction in the story, suggesting that his character was still in development at that time.

Utilizes dodging techniques. Will vanish and then appear in the sky or from the ground. Uses a self-destruct technique. Waits for his opponent to attack, then tries to counter with that technique. Dodges by shedding his skin and leaving his empty husk behind. A cicada. Insect warrior.

The word 空蝉 (うつせみ/utsusemi) can mean a cicada, a cicada's empty husk, or a "person living in this world", referring to the transient nature of human life.

Many of the website profiles were updated over the course of the tournament, and Kale of Universe 6 also had a profile found in the source code which was never published, but Damon is one of only three participants in the Tournament of Power who never had a profile or design published on the website at all.[6] The others are Maji-Kayo of Universe 3[7] and Damon's Universe 4 teammate Gamisalas.[6]

Gamisalas was originally designed to be another bug person with a different color scheme, but he was eventually written as an invisible man instead, and what we are able to see of his final design is quite different from Damon in size and features. The issue of V-Jump where the early design was revealed was published on 21 August 2017, and Dragon Ball Super Episode 119 was broadcast on 10 December 2017. This time frame provides a indication of the series' production schedule at that time.

Performance

Damon is voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka in his first credited role for the Dragon Ball franchise. In the Funimation dub, Damon is voiced by Bruce DuBose, also in his first credited Dragon Ball role.
