Helles is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Helles makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the God of Destruction of Universe 2.

Biography

Helles is a God of Destruction in the form of a woman who sings praises of the magnificence of Universe 2's "Power of Love". She has an unusually high sense of aesthetics and hates ugly things.[2][3]

Zen Exhibition Match

Helles's character design for the Tournament of Power.[2]

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and then brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Helles is in attendance with Peru and Souwa, the Kaiōshin and Angel of Universe 2.[4] Helles is bewildered by the antics of Majin Boo during his fight with Basil, and she wonders why Boo is laughing when he is getting beaten up.[5]

When the Great Priest informs the gods that losing universes will be destroyed in the Tournament of Power, Helles thinks this will be a terrifying fight. Bergamo of Universe 9 makes a speech denouncing Son Goku for his role in making the tournament happen. He asks the Omni-Kings to reconsider their plans if he wins his match against Goku, and the Omni-Kings agree. As Champa boos Goku, Ea asks him who Goku is and why he is so irreverent with the Omni-Kings, and Helles also wants to know why they and the Great Priest put up with it. Kur thinks this is especially difficult to understand considering the low mortal level of Universe 7. Champa tells them that he does not know; there is a lot about Goku that is difficult to understand.[6]

Recruitment

Champa calls a video meeting of all the Gods of Destruction from his location in the Universe 6 Kaiōshin Realm. He tells them that the Kaiōshin have just had a meeting, and asks the other Gods of Destruction whether they are planning anything shady for the Tournament of Power. Rumoosh scoffs, and Helles says they would never do anything so ugly. Sidra seems angry, Vermoud laughs, and Quitela says that of course they will not cheat; if the Omni-Kings were to find out, they would be erased. With Camparri interpreting, Mosco asks why they have not invited Beerus, and Helles seconds his question. Champa does not want to answer, but Quitela surmises that Beerus was not invited because Son Goku is from his universe, and the tournament was his idea.

Vados reminds everyone that they are in Goku's debt; if he had not proposed the tournament, then all of their universes would have been erased; Goku has given them a chance to survive. Sidra is unconvinced; watching Goku at the Zen Exhibition Match irritated him greatly. Rumoosh agrees; Goku's irreverence with the Omni-Kings was unforgivable. Even still, Helles finds Goku to be very attractive. Vermoud laughs again; he believes that Universe 7 is no match for the warriors of Universe 11, like the Pride Troopers and their leader Toppo.[7]

Name

Helles (ヘレス/Heresu) is a traditional German pale lager beer, produced chiefly in Southern Germany, particularly Munich. ヘレス is also the katakana transliteration of the Spanish word for Sherry (jerez), a fortified white wine made from grapes grown near Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain. Whichever is the true source for her name, the pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[8]

Performance

Helles is voiced by Masumi Asano, whose roles include Cocoa Amaguri, Bikal of Universe Two, and Rylibeu of Universe Ten. In the FUNimation dub, Helles is voiced by Maryam Baig in her first role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
