Super Saiyan (Berserk) is introduced in Dragon Ball Super episode 93 when the Saiyan Kale of Universe 6 achieves the form through anger. Vegeta believes that this transformation might be the Saiyans' original form.[1][2]

Name

This form is variously named "Kale: Berserk" (ケール:暴走),[3][4] "Super Saiyan Kale",[5] "Super Saiyan Kale: Berserk" (超サイヤ人ケール:暴走),[6] and Super Saiyan 2.[7]

Promotion

Super Saiyan (Berserk) was introduced in a preview of the "Limit-Break x Survivor" opening theme animation, initially presented after the Japanese broadcast of Dragon Ball Super episode 75 on 22 January 2017.[8] In the preview, which features additional frames of animation not present in the final broadcast version of the opening theme, Kale is seen transforming from her normal form into her berserk state. Fans immediately recognized her as a "female Broli".[9][10]

An interview with Dragon Ball Super producer Sakoru Takami and director Ryōta Nakamura published near the end of the anime's broadcast run touches on the inspiration behind Kale's transformation:

Nakamura: The Universe 6 Saiyan Caulifla was another one of Toriyama-sensei‘s character designs.
Takami: She wasn’t part of the initial rough draft. During a story conference, it was mentioned that Broli was very popular.
Nakamura: From there, we came up with the character of Kale.
Takami: We wanted a Broli-like character, but it would be boring to have it be exactly the same. So we made the character a girl, and designed her at Toei Animation. When we showed her to Toriyama-sensei, he went along with it and drew Caulifla.[11]

The green aura, blank eyes, and bulked-up form are a reference to the Toei-original "Legendary Super Saiyan" form of Dragon Ball Z Movie 8; these traits are maintained in the Naohiro Shintani adaptation for Dragon Ball Super: Broly called "Super Saiyan Full Power".
