Nail is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Nail makes his debut in chapter 264, published in the 1990 #13 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Nail is the sole warrior-type Namekian on Planet Namek,[1] where he guards the Eldest Namekian.[2] In Age 762,[3] the planet is beset by Freeza and his men, who go around terrorizing villagers until they give up their wish-granting Dragon Balls. A few Earthlings have come to Namek as well, hoping to wish back the Earth's set of Dragon Balls. They end up rescuing a Namekian child called Dende, who introduces them to the Eldest.[4]

Another menace plaguing Namekian villages is the Saiyan Vegeta, who ends up following the Earthlings to the Eldest's house. Nail tells him to leave and Vegeta thinks of resisting, but then they suddenly notice five powerful aliens approaching the planet. Freeza has called in the Ginyu Special Force, which makes Vegeta so desperate that he teams up with the Earthlings to fight them. The Eldest asks Nail to go assist them as well,[5] but on the way to the battlefield, Nail gets a bad feeling that danger will soon befall the Eldest, and goes back to protect him.[6] Sure enough, Freeza himself arrives at the Eldest's house asking how to get his wish from the Dragon Balls. The Eldest telepathically asks Nail to buy time so that Dende can reach the Earthlings and help them summon Porunga.[1]

Though Freeza is impressed when his scouter shows Nail's battle power to be 42,000, it still pales in comparison to his own 530,000.[7] Nail puts up what little fight he can, but succeeds in stalling for time. When Freeza finally realizes this, he storms off towards the Earthlings, leaving Nail to die.[8] But the Earthlings get their wish and bring Piccolo to Planet Namek, the warrior-type half of the Namekian who created the Earth's Dragon Balls. Piccolo comes across the dying Nail, who lets him know just how powerful Freeza is. Nail offers to assimilate with Piccolo in order to increase his power, and becomes part of him permanently.[9]
