Kuriza is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, debuting in Neko Majin Z 2 by Akira Toriyama, originally published 06 August 2003 in the September 2003 issue of Shueisha's (now-defunct) Monthly Shōnen Jump magazine. In the following chapter, Kuriza is revealed to be Freeza's son.

Biography

Kuriza transforms into his "true form" in Neko Majin Z 2.
Kuriza excited to hear that his father, Freeza, sent Vegeta to save him in Neko Majin Z 3.

Neko Majin

Having been defeated and humiliated in his previous battle against the Neko Majin named Z (ultimately leading to his off-page divorce), Onio returns to Earth for revenge with help: the strongest being in the universe, an alien with a chestnut-shaped head, Kuriza. Z is unimpressed, preoccupied with arranging his new battle with the "strongest man in the world," Thunderbolt. To get everyone's attention, Kuriza fires a ki blast, destroying Thunderbolt's car. Z is furious that someone is getting in the way of his fight with Thunderbolt, and charges in at Kuriza, punching him so hard that he goes into the ground, bursting out covered in oil. Finally seeing what he is up against, Kuriza hunches over and transforms, showcasing his "true form". Z decides to transform as well, with his resulting transformation only being apparent by the new double-eyelids; Kuriza is upset that they are wasting pages on such worthless things. Thunderbolt chops his assistant unconscious when she lets an "onion-head" insult hurl at Kuriza. Z's young friend runs off to catch his favorite anime, while Z just stands and farts in the subsequent silence. Kuriza decides to give up for the day, upset that he would be expected to show off with a single page left, being called an "onion-head", and the others are just watching anime and farting. Kuriza wants to fight the next day, but Z will be busy fishing. Everyone will just have to stay over at Z's place, helping out with the chores, until they can find a time to battle.[1]

Z, his young friend, Onio, and Kuriza enjoy a rambunctious game of soccer until Kuriza accidentally kicks the ball into the sky with all his strength. Everyone thinks the ball is coming back down, but when Z flies up to kick it, they find they have kicked Vegeta's space pod down. Onio is surprised to see Vegeta; he has come on Freeza's orders to rescue the group, who has been gone for five months. Kuriza, certain that Vegeta will win, watches from the sidelines while Z does battle with Vegeta. When Vegeta seemingly takes a phone call and rushes back off into space, Kuriza and Onio wonder if their cell phone signal would reach all the way out here on this planet...[2]

Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X

The player may encounter Kuriza flying around the world map in the original story mode of Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X. Upon engaging him, Kuriza demends to know the name of the planet they are on. Believing that the player recognizes his face, Kuriza introduces himself both by name and as Freeza's son. Kuriza continues to demand to know how to escape this planet, challenging the player in battle.[3]

Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission

In the third portion of the the second chapter in the original story mode of Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, having battled Freeza and entering an interdimensional space transfer, the player may come across a wounded Freeza and King Cold. Kuriza lands in a spaceship alongside Avo and Cado to rescue them, challenging the player in the process. When the player defeats Kuriza and the others, Coola arrives with his own squadron to continue the battle.[4]

Name

Kuriza's name (クリーザ Kuriiza) combines the kuri from "chestnut" (the shape of his head) with the "-iza" ending of Freeza's name (フリーザ Furiiza).

The character's name is spelled as "Kuriza" in Bandai Namco's English localization of Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission. Viz spells the name as "Kreeza" in "Dragon Ball: A Visual History" (the company's 2019 English translation of the Dragon Ball: Chogasu -Super Art Collection-, originally released in Japan in 2013); while Viz released a translation of Neko Majin Z 5 in the 100th issue of their Shonen Jump print magazine, this 2019 caption is the company's only official localization of the name thus far, with no other Neko Majin chapters having been released.

Production

Kuriza was designed and written by Akira Toriyama for the Neko Majin series. While Kuriza's appearance and subsequent transformation in Neko Majin Z 2 draws clear Freeza parallels, it is not until Neko Majin Z 3 that Kuriza confirms that Freeza is in fact his father.

Performance

Kuriza is played by Wataru Takagi in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series.

Notable Appearances

Following his debut in Neko Majin Z 2 (originally published 06 August 2003 in the September 2003 issue of Shueisha's Monthly Shōnen Jump magazine), Kuriza appeared one more time in the series' following chapter, Neko Majin Z 3 (originally published 06 February 2004 in the March 2004 issue of Monthly Shōnen Jump).

The same month as the character's appearance in Neko Majin Z 3, Kuriza appeared as an alternate costume for Freeza in Dragon Ball Z 2 on the PlayStation 2 (the Japanese release of "Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2", which released the prior November and December in America and Europe, respectively; Kuriza is not available as an alternate costume in these international editions). While gameplay otherwise remains the same while playing in the Kuriza "costume", the character's Death Ball super-attack is adjusted to look like a giant chestnut-shaped blast. The character can also be found in an extra stage of the Japanese edition's Dragon World mode.[5][6] In addition to the game's newly-included Coola alternate skin, Kuriza remains an alternate skin for Freeza in the V-Jump promotional release of Dragon Ball Z 2 V.

Kuriza began making appearances in the Dragon Ball Heroes arcade game series beginning with the "Evil Dragons Mission 2" update in January 2014 with HJ2-SEC2. Subsequent cards have included HJ4-61 from the "Evil Dragons Mission 4" update in May 2014 and HGD2-40 from the "God Mission 2" update in May 2015. These cards respectively carried over to August 2014's Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 and April 2017's Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X on the Nintendo 3DS. Kuriza also appears in April 2019's Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission on the Nintendo Switch and PC, where he makes a cameo in an original story mode side-mission, and is also available as a custom, player-made "sticker" character card.

Techniques

Final Form

Kuriza's Final Form — by way of the Transformation Ability — is a transformed state in which he generally resembles Freeza's own Final Form, though sporting a chestnut-shaped head. Kuriza's Final Form is available as a transformation in Dragon Ball Z 2 as well as in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series, where it is available on card HJ4-61 as a Transformation Card Action Ability with the following effect:

3ラウンド目以降アタッカーにすると、カードアクションが発生する。成功すると、変身し、HPが3000アップする。

When this card is chosen as an attacker from Round 3 onward, it will activate its Card Action Ability. If successful, this card transforms and gains an additional 3,000 HP.

Death Ball

Kuriza's Death Ball (デスボール Desu Bōru) is a Super Attack in Dragon Ball Z 2 as well as in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series, where it is available on cards HJ2-SEC2, HJ4-61, and HGD2-40. The attack costs 7 Hero Energy on HJ4-61, and HGD2-40, and 8 Hero Energy on HJ2-SEC2. As opposed to Freeza's Death Ball, Kuriza's sports a chestnut shape and a face.

Double Attack of Terror

Kuriza's Double Attack of Terror (恐怖のダブルアタック Kyōfu no Daburu Atakku) is a variation on the Double Attack Card Action Ability in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series. When the card action is successfully performed, Double Attack of Terror grants Kuriza and the additional card chosen for the Double Attack 1.5 times Power and Guard for the remainder of the match. Double Attack of Terror is available on cards HJ2-SEC2, with the following text:

2ラウンド目以降アタッカーにすると、チーム攻撃時にパートナーと一緒にダブルアタックする。さらに、超ダブル効果で自分とパートナーのパワーとガードが永続で1.5倍になる。[1回限り]

When this card is chosen as an attacker from Round 2 onward, this card and a partner may perform a Double Attack. In addition, this card and its partner gain 1.5 times Power and Guard permanently via Super Double Effect. Limit once per match.

Parent and Child Fear

Kuriza's Parent and Child Fear (プラネットボム Kyōfu no Oyaku Jiibun) is an ability in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series, granting an automatic 1,000 increase to the card's Battle Power at the start of a match. When either Freeza or Mecha Freeza is on the owner's team, each of Kuriza, Freeza and Mecha Freeza will gain an additional 2,000 Battle Power instead. Parent and Child Fear is available on cards HJ2-SEC2 and HJ4-61, with the following text:

自分の戦闘力が1000アップする。自分チームに「フリーザ」か「メカフリーザ」がいる場合は、自分と「フリーザ」と「メカフリーザ」の戦闘力が2000アップする。[永続]

This card gains an additional 1,000 Battle Power. When Freeza or Mecha Freeza are on your team, this card, Freeza and Mecha Freeza gain an additional 2,000 Battle Power instead. Permanent.

Challenging Attitude

Kuriza's Challenging Attitude (挑戦的な態度 chōsen-tekina taido) is a variation on the Lock-On Card Action Ability in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series, granting the ability to select the target of the card's attack while drastically increasing the target's Charge Impact speed. Challenging Attitude is available on card HGD2-40, with the following text:

必殺技が発動できる時にアタッカーにすると、 ロックオンした敵を攻撃し、その敵のチャージインパクトスピードを超速くする。[1回限り]

When this card is able to perform a Super Attack, it will attack the enemy it has locked onto. In addition, this card drastically increases the chosen enemy's Charge Impact speed. Limit once per match.
