Summary

The world is finally at peace with Son Goku having defeated Majin Boo. As Goku is stuck working a tractor, Goten runs up with lunch. Goku is surprised to see his son who should otherwise be at school, but it is actually Sunday. Goku takes his lunch break and leaves the tractor work to Goten. Having regained his strength, Goku begins to daydream about fighting strong opponents again, moving his way from Freeza to Cell to Boo, all the while acting out his attack motions. Goten, distracted by Goku's "training", drives the tractor off a cliff. Goku quickly saves his son, and expresses his desire to go train with Lord Kaiō… but Chi-Chi would never allow it. Goku has to work to make some money, since even the Ox Demon King is broke now! Just then, Mr. Satan arrives.

Meanwhile, off somewhere in the reaches of space, an alien race tries to appease Beerus, God of Destruction, with an elaborate meal. The aliens appear confused when nothing happens after Beerus drinks up. Smirking, Beerus lets the aliens know he could tell it was poisoned, but something like that would never affect him. Trying to cover their tracks, the aliens next bring out their special soup, "Soup Yasai Jinkot". Though Beerus pauses at the name, he has already made up his mind: the planet will be destroyed. Hearing this, the aliens arm themselves in an attempt to fight back, but Beerus casually blows them and the rest of the planet to smithereens. Whis comments that Beerus has destroyed them just as he planned, but Beerus is preoccupied with a dream he just remembered.

Mister Satan offers the money to Vegeta in this chapter's interstitial page, found in the first collected volume.

Back on Earth, Goku is overwhelmed by the amount of money Mr. Satan has offered up. The 100 million zenni prize money came as a reward for saving the world, but Mr. Satan feels that Goku and the gang are the ones who truly deserve it. Goku is still overwhelmed by the amount and initially refuses, but when Goten explains that it is enough money for Goku to be able to forget about work and go train, that is all he needs to hear.

Beerus remembers the name from his dream: "Super Saiyan God". This "Super Saiyan God" person is someone to rival even him… or something like that, anyway. As Beerus and Whis decide to return home, the Kaiōshin have watched Beerus destroy a planet and worry about what is to come.

Interstitial Page

In the interstitial page following this chapter in the first collected volume, Mister Satan offers Vegeta the prize money. Vegeta, who is chowing down on a Saiyan-sized meal, refuses to accept the money, telling Satan that they have enough.

Continuity

An alien race fêtes Beerus in Dragon Ball Super Episode 1.

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • Beerus visits two planets in the anime before he recalls the term "Super Saiyan God". The first planet he visits in Episode 1 is the most similar to the one he visits in this chapter, though the residents are hog-like rather than bug-like, and they do not try to poison Beerus. He destroys half of their planet because the food was too greasy (in the manga, he destroys it completely due to the attempt on his life). The second planet he visits in Episode 2 is the one that causes him to recall the name "Super Saiyan God", but not because of anything anyone says. He visits the planet in the first place because he hopes their famous dinosaur meat will help him remember the name, but the natives want to fight for it, so he decides to just destroy the planet. The explosion helps him remember the name.
  • The final scenes of this chapter mirror the final scenes of Episode 2.
  • Episode 1 of the anime has a few additional scenes:
    • Mister Satan holds a press conference about the World Peace Prize, which is interrupted by a hungry Majin Boo.
    • Piccolo watches over Gohan as Videl takes him shopping for the books he needs for his studies.
    • Goten and Trunks try to find an anniversary present for Videl. They travel to a hot springs to get what they believe is cosmetic water, fighting a giant snake in the process. They bring Videl what amounts to nothing more than regular water, but she is touched by their efforts regardless.
  • Episode 2 expands upon a scene that was foreshadowed in Dragon Ball Chapter 429, where Vegeta promised to take Trunks to the amusement park if he could land one hit on him. Four years later, Vegeta finally makes good on his promise, taking Trunks and Bulma to the amusement park.
  • Goku's scenes in this chapter are all covered in Episode 1. In Episode 2, he is already training on Kaiō's planet.

Notes

  • "Soup Yasai Jinkot" (スープ・ヤサイ・ジンコット) is a play on "Super Saiyan God", which is why it prompts Beerus to remember the figure from his dream. The word "soup" (スープ) sounds like "sūpā". The word "saiya" (from the race name, Saiya-jin) is an anagram of yasai (meaning "vegetable", normally written 野菜, but here written in katakana as ヤサイ). "Jinkot" is a meaningless, imaginary word, but clearly recalls the "jin" in Saiya-jin, while "kot" sounds similar to "god". Viz adapted this as "Soup D'Saian Gahd" in their English translation.
