Maze Land is a maze/puzzle video game developed by Takashi Shimizu (清水孝司)[a] for Enix and released in 1983 for the Sharp MZ-700 microcomputer in Japan.

The overall game package (stylized as "MAZELAND" on its box cover) contains two games that can be selected from its title screen:

  • the game specified for children called めいろやしき (or roughly "Maze Mansion") featuring Dr. Slump characters (as well as a variation on its TV series' original theme song, "Wai Wai World" by Shunsuke Kikuchi);
  • and the eponymous "MAZE LAND" aimed at adults which includes some striptease elements[1] (as well as a variation on the Arcadia of My Youth theme song by Masaaki Hirao).

Gameplay

The back of the box describes the game:[2]

A bloodsucking spider approaches!! A warning buzzer echoes throughout the 3D maze. Beam fired! Aahhhh!! From the terrifying "Maze Land" to the fun "Maze Mansion" featuring Arale-chan, 3D mazes have evolved into real-time games.

Gameplay in "Maze Mansion" takes place in a first-person view, with the player navigating simple mazes of walls and hallways to find Arale at the winning endpoint, and avoiding Nikochan at the losing endpoint.

Development

Maze Land was developed in a four-month period:[2]

Creator profile: Takashi Kiyomizu
Born in 1950, in Niigata prefecture, where he currently lives. Employed at a public corporation. Has two years of experience with microcomputers. Pushes the graphical capabilities of the MZ-700 to their absolute limits. Also likes to tackle making mazes in 3D. Refuses to make any compromises, even to himself, and after laboring diligently for about four months, he managed to complete this fun-but-scary game.
