Nippon Golden Network, commonly referred to by acronym as NGN, is an American television channel broadcast in Hawaii. The channel was notable for its 1990s broadcast of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z television series in its original Japanese language with accompanying English subtitles, following Harmony Gold's initiative with the franchise and ahead of FUNimation's later acquisition.

The Dragon Ball franchise debuted in January 1992 on Nippon Golden Network.

Dragon Ball

The Dragon Ball television series debuted 05 January 1992 on Nippon Golden Network between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m.[2][3][a], running through the full series to its final episode on 11 December 1994[4].

Dragon Ball Z

The Dragon Ball Z television series debuted 18 December 1994[5][b] on Nippon Golden Network, inheriting the timeslot from the first television series.[6] Just over 100 episodes of the series were produced; the series did not run to completion.[c]

Legacy

Recordings of Nippon Golden Network broadcasts were heavily traded in the VHS fansub circuit in the 1990s, with their subtitled versions of the entirety of the Dragon Ball series and early parts of the Dragon Ball Z series often being skipped by other fansubbers due to, alongside other factors, NGN's versions already being available.

Nippon Golden Network ran the Dragon Ball Z television series for just over 100 episodes[7] into 1995; this, incidentally, coincided with FUNimation's acquisition (1994) and initial distribution (1995) of the Dragon Ball franchise in North America.

Notes

  1. Posts of the era are inconsistent regarding the exact start time, and TV listings in newspaper do not make 15-minute distinctions. While it's possible it aired at 6:30 pm, we have actual screenshots of Dragon Ball Z commercials saying it ran at 6:15pm...
  2. This premiere date was determined by searching through the newspapers.com paid archives and by examining the specific timeslot listings for Nippon Golden Network on a week-to-week basis. Whereas the listing for Sunday, December 11 says "Dragon Ball", it is here on Sunday, December 18 that the listing switches to saying "Dragon Ball Z". This lines up precisely with contemporary chatter on the rec.arts.anime Usenet board regarding the shift in programming.
  3. Dragon Ball Z's final listing for broadcast on Nippon Golden Network in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald is on Sunday, September 29, 1996; this is roughly two weeks after the larger, nationwide debut of FUNimation's English dub. The October 6, 1996 issue of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald does not list Dragon Ball Z in the same timeslot, instead noting Japanese news program "Hodo 2001" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
