Image Request (one single screencap)

Post by FindKenshi » Sun Feb 24, 2008 5:32 am

Well, I'm mostly for the Orange Brick funimation sets, but I am currently trying to make a point to someone about how the cropping is signficant, and I discovered one example I know for certain will do the trick. I need a screencap of the original and or dragonbox version of this frame. It is in the Dragonball TV Special: Bardock, Goku's Loving Poppy. (Ok, maybe that's not the real title)

Anyway, part of what makes anime so awesome is that..well.. it's art. It's supposed to look cool. And one of my favorite scenes from any dragonball animation, is this scene in the Bardock special. This specific frame, I should say, since it's one of my favorite characters...

When Dodoria is killing Bardock's best friend, Toma, and the guy is asking Dodoria why; there is a closeup of Dodoria's face, smiling wickedly, that takes up the whole frame. Although I do not own other versions on DVD, I've seen it online and whatnot enough to remember what the frame looks like.. and I'm positive it's not like this...

So come on, someone lay on me a screencap from the noncropped version so I can see how my memory was.

There, that's what the same image looks like on the 4:3-single. I've got to say, if FUNi just moved the frame a bit, that cropped shot propably wouldn't look that bad.

Thanks. Well it wasn't as good an example as I thought it was then. I thought I remembered both of Dodoria's eyes being fully on-screen. Oh well, it's still a pretty good example, as at least his left eye isn't COMPLETLY off screen like it is for funi.

So did FUNI selectively crop certain scenes, or did they just take an equal amount from top and bottom?

I'm pretty sure they just took the same amount off the top and bottom. If they were selective, then we wouldn't have disappearing heads (they'd cut more from the bottom). Seriously, you should know that they took no time in doing this. They just ran it through the machine and whatever came out would go into the sets. That's why we have disappearing lines.

How can that be from the new Funi DVD ? It does NOT have black bars, since it's real widescreen and not a letterboxed one... :?

When you request a 16:9 source to be played back in a 4:3 space and it's flagged properly in the video track (which it is in FUNimation's case), the video playback software (be it on a computer or in a set-top player) knows to add in the black bars on the top and bottom to maintain the correct aspect ratio.

To be quite honest, that shot shows how the cropping isn't so bad. I mean, all that you are missing is his left iris, and it was right at the top of the screen (would probably be cropped on most tv's anyway)...

In this case the cropping isn't so bad, but a lot of the time, it would chop the eyes off completely, the head off completely, you know. It's happened lots of times. It just so happened that here nothing important got cut out. If only they had enough horizontal footage to make up for the entire vertical image that they had to crop. That would be amazing I think, and I completely wouldn't mind anything else to be honest lol If you get what I mean. Like if they had so much more side footage that they didn't have to crop the top and bottom. But hey, one can only dream. If I have to choose between it being like this and 4:3, I choose 4:3 and would pick to see the top of someone's head than an arm. But that's me. That's why I got virtually all of the series in 4:3. Everything that they will release from now on, I have on DVD. I was missing the rest of Ultimate Uncut that they didn't come out with, 2 Ginyu DVDs, the Garlic Jr. Saga, and the Trunks Saga. But everything else, I have. So I don't HAVE to get these sets, but I will anyway. Just to have at least one consistent release of DBZ! lol So that if I ever want to show someone the show, I could show them this. That's the positive really. Much less DVDs, much less space, more episodes, and even though they're cropped, someone watching for the first time probably wouldn't get that. At least they'd know the story beginning to end without skipping the Goku/Vegeta fight and the Namek Saga.

By the way, just noticed the post above me, when you compare the Season Sets to watching the 4:3 on an Overscan TV, it comes out virtually the same (bottom is a bit more chopped off). Typically that would not be the case, but the side footage makes it possible. I had pictures on here. But now that I'm watching everything on an HDTV which has virtually no cropping, NOW is when it's noticeable.

I watch the season sets on my little tv and the image fills the screen, so...

"It's not so bad" isn't really an argument, considering his entire eye is off the screen...

It's a tiny dot... Every TV in my house crops at least that much off. But if it was an HDtv then it should be visible... But not everyone is rich!

So you're saying, instead of some people being able to have the complete picture, and some not have it because of overscan, everyone should not have the complete picture.

Yeah. But now every TV in my house is HD (5 TVs here), so no more overscan to that degree lol

Do you have an iris fetish?

No, but I have a correct aspect ratio fetish. I don't see any benefits from the show being cropped, aside from gaining a small amount of footage on the sides.
