Manga Chapters In Anime Colors Vol. 1 - DragonBall

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:42 am

So, I wanted to start this thing where every so often I'll post up pictures of the manga chapter art re-done in anime colors. Where did these come from? Well, sometime in the 90's there were these cards in Japan that had manga chapters and or cover art re-done in anime colors. I have a few of them from every saga, and thought people here might like to see these. This first set will cover the DragonBall series. I don't have many for each DragonBall arc so I figure I'd make this one category. .

I have a question though, sometimes the image on the card is in a square and sometimes the image in the square pops out from the square. The cards that have images within the square have the rest of the card cut out around it so it just shows the square image. The cards where the image is popping out of the square shows the whole card (well, for some). So I'd like to know if this is how you'd like to see the rest of the collection or would you rather see the whole card regardless. Also, would you even be interested in seeing more? Is this something you people want to see? (What'd you mean "you people" lol)

Absolutely awesome idea. Can't wait to see some of the Buu era ones, for obvious reasons.

That'll be difficult with the B&W pictures...

These are really neat to look at! :D
My favorites have to be the "Bulma goes bike-riding" and "Goku and Chi-Chi on a motorcycle". It's so cool to see the latter image with Chi-Chi with black hair. The original where she's got Launch-blue hair and eyes was confusing the very first time I saw it. (Back when I was a newbie I wasn't sure if that was Chi-Chi at all in that shot.)

I originally was gonna put up the corresponding images but only had these so... I didn't start that trend.

It's up to you if you really wanna scan all of the corresponding chapter art and post them. Would be kinda cool.

I agree completely! I didn't really like the picture of Chichi on the motorcycle because of the blue hair. It just didn't feel right. These are all awsome though. I've always liked the cover with Kuririn and Chaotzu.

Because most of these are large, I'm gonna keep 'em as hyperlinks.

Oh, and I don't have the tankobon, so I snagged those covers from Kanzentai, and then snipped those down to the image we're comparing.

I've always wondered, when they adapt a manga into anime, where do they get the colors? Do thy just make them up or what?

I think a few are already picked by the author, like Goku's gi. However, a lot do change. Gohan's adult gi was originally green with white belts and bands, while the show went with purple and red.

I'd say Vegeta was a victim of this. They went with their own coloring before Toriyama went and said "whoa, hold up a second.", because he already had Vegeta's coloring planned out, like Goku's. Of course, that's just weird and probably off-the-mark speculation on my part...

How did you get these awesome cards? And how were they distributed or sold in Japan?

The manga has some color pages, covers, etc. A lot (if not all?) manga do, in fact. So sometimes the colors come from those. Or the artist might come up with a reference sheet or colored sketches for the studios, I suppose.

In the last image of Goku and Chi Chi on the bike, Goku has one green eye and one black eye. Strange.

Huh, I didn't notice, kaizoku. I was too busy with Chichi to care about Goku. That's the finest she's ever been.
