Dragon Bites [Mini-Comic]

Post by Kaboom » Sun Jan 01, 2012 10:46 pm

It's the first of the year, and I'm bringing something brand-spanking new! You ready for this?
Image
Okay, here's how this is going to work. As I'm sure all six of you who follow GTR know full well, I've been pretty slow to update anything lately. I've just been too busy, and even when I do get time, it's hard to find inspiration and get those creative juices flowing. Thus is my primary goal in starting up this little side-project; it's something small-scale and fun that will only take a little bit of my time, but will also serve to keep the creative side of my brain exercised and ready to really buckle down and crank out the big stuff.

As an added bonus, you guys all get to see something cute and funny once a week. The simple format you see above is what I'll be sticking to; 4 panels, a title up top, black and white or minimal shading/color, no dialogue, and somewhat simple and "chibi-ized" character designs. What will change is the medium. This one was all digitally drawn because I wanted to get a bit fancy with the nebula in the first panel. Next one might be hand-drawn with markers. The sky is the limit in that regard.

This is actually something I've had on the back burner for a long time, and that means I've already got a whole bunch of ideas stockpiled, lined up and ready to be realized. Plus, if there's anything I pride myself in, it's my ability to bring the funny. So there shouldn't be any problem with me thinking up material. *knock wood*

Finally, I come to my last note for now...

This thing needs a name.

The best I could come up with so far is "Dragon Bites" or "Dragon Bits." Hardly inspired or anything I'd want to stick to for who knows how many future strips. So I'm opening up the floor to suggestions from you guys. I'll draw something for you if you come up with something brilliant and I pick it. Deal?

Dragon Ball 4-koma? :P

I really like this first one. It's always fun to take these small, otherwise forgettable elements, and make something big out of them.

Awesome, Kaboom! Have you ever thought of hosting a website for your comics? Like other online comics do? It'd be a great way to get yourself out there. Anyways, can't wait for more of this.

Call it something simple. DB Weekly would work.

I'm so looking forward to this! A weekly "bite-sized" DB comic sounds like a fun idea. Wish I thought of it but then again I'm not clever enough to come up with a new joke for every strip. Most likely I'll just make a boob or panty joke and call it a day.

As for a title, well I was never really good at coming up with names. I think "Dragon Bits" sounds right but I'm sure someone will come up with something better.

Looks promising. I think something simple like your suggestions, "Dragon Bites" or "Dragon Bits", could work, but it's up to you.

Nice comic. Looking forward to seeing more. It's always good when it's something clever.

Names, hmm. How about..

"Four starters"
"D to Z"
"Mini Dragon Bits"
"Dragon Bla...Bla"
"Dragon Bloopers"
"Dragon Bleeps"
"Dragonball Uncut, Uncensored, 4 panels, Sparking!!"

I like Mini Dragon Bits because it's suggestive 8)

Great idea :D
Thought of something similar once after seeing the japanese ones, but I never came up with any that I thought were funny enough.

But be careful, these side projects can be bad. That what I thought my fan comic was going to be and I ended up investing so much time in it and none at all with the main project :(

Sorry, I'm not good with names. At all ...

So, uh... so much for "weekly." That didn't last long, huh? To be honest, I probably jinxed myself just by proposing the idea in the first place.

Image

This one's a little too big due to the different layout, so you'll have to click the thumbnail.
We shall not be having another full-color comic for a very long time.

Now that that's done with... in case you hadn't noticed the thread title, I picked a name! No offense and my sincerest thanks to those who had suggestions, but nothing else was really leaping out at me, so I decided to go with "Dragon Bites" after all. It's simple, it's catchy... it'll work. At the very least, I don't want to be stuck with something bland and barely-descriptive like I did with GTR...

Hehe, Sonic :P I like the title you're going with as well.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

No, no! The physics are all wrong. Goku should be able to just walk the loop. He doesn't need to run. Also what's with these rolling physics? Obviously they're all wrong and he should not pick up momentum rolling down a loop. Joking about Sonic 4's horrendous physics aside, I like this short little comic. It's pretty cool.

I was wondering where the second one was.

Quick question Kaboom - are they meant to go in order at all, or is it just as ideas come to you and which ones seem more fun to draw first? I ask just because it's kind of in order so far, with the first one kind of being from the opening and this one being from one of the very first scenes.

I did find it weird, that there wasn't released one last week.
Keep it up though!
Also is the 150 million km a reference to Super Saiyan Goku on Namek or was it just a coincidence?

The Earth is (roughly) 150 million km from the Sun.

You're right; they are going to all be in order, and will continue to be so.

You're both right. I looked up the distance of the Earth to the Sun, and was pleased to find that the number corresponded like that.
