Daizenshuu 7 Geographical Dictionary

Post by Herms » Mon Sep 07, 2009 12:48 am

This is a translation of Daizenshuu 7's Geographical Dictionary, a guide to the various places that appear throughout the series, including the manga, anime filler, movies, and TV specials. I did this wa~ay back, in the summer before last summer. Since we've gotten pretty far behind in our Daizenshuu Bonus Coverage over at Kanzentai, I figured that I'd just post it here. I've been planning on doing this for awhile, but I kept putting it off because of how much of a pain it is to sort all the entries into alphabetical order (I finally bit the bullet and sorted them while listening to the latest podcast :p). I'll probably be revising the translation a bit here and there. Sentences after [ ] are picture captions.

Place Name
*-indicates an anime-original place
Area: Shows which region it belongs to: the afterlife, universe, or Earth. Also indicates which area of the Earth.
Special Characteristics: That area’s general special characteristics
Battles: What battles happened in that place. For places where numerous battles occurred, examples are noted.
Events: What events happened there. For places with many events, examples are given. Also, things inside ( ) marks indicate which daizenshuu, 1~6, those events are recorded in, and on which page. For anime-only things, it gives the section title and page number which the relevant events are recorded on.

The Earth of the DragonBall world is divided [by the daizenshuu] up into 12 regions. The “area” in the entries on the Earth refers to this. [To see these areas, check out this page (scroll down past the afterlife stuff).]

That didn’t happen in the show, did it? Maybe one of the places Goku visited in the filler showing his pre-Cell Game search for the dragonballs was also named “Alpha”, and the writers conflated it with this planet? Confusing things further is the fact that Daizenshuu 10 refers to the inhabitants of the planet that Buu is shown destroying during the filler flashback of his origin as the “people of Planet Alpha”. This is because of the US question, huh? :P Well, we can never complain about having more information available! Thanks for translating it as always, Herms.

Come to think of it, I'd forgotten which planet Goku was on when he was training for the 25th tournament. Now I know again. Woo!

There are living beings in Hell? That is something new, I guess.

Sure, why not? There are plenty of living beings in the afterlife. Enma, Kaio, Bubbles. Goku can even Shunkan Ido while alive if he feels like it.

If I remember right, demons (or is it devils?) like Akkuman (as the guide says) are indigenous to Hell. There are also Oni there in filler, but we never see Hell in the manga.

I thought the original Hell didn't have anybody with a body living in there. Sure there are those Oni but that is filler crap.
This is pretty interesting, at least for me.

This seems to be an inconsistency (or is it possibly a misconception?). Dr Slump Hell has people in striped prisoner attire being taken to Hell via a Flying Dutchman, whereas the person after Goku being judged by Enma had their body, too. Maybe souls only lose their bodies if they're destroyed or if they died from old age. Then it would be a matter of getting a new body, which would always get turned down for those going to Hell.

As for indegenous beings to Hell, devils like Akkuman in DB and Chivil in Dr Slump are born in Hell. Chivil's sister, a witch, is also from Hell. This makes me wonder if Baba and Roshi's immortality stems from Baba and her mom being from Hell, and Roshi being the son of a mortal man and a witch.

(Oh now, double posting! Do I have to say a few Hail Marys for this?)

So I’ve corrected a few mistakes. Mainly, I had accidentally left a few entries near the beginning of the “Earth” section out, including Oolong’s Village and Uranai Baba’s palace. Somehow I must have overlooked these while putting all the entries in alphabetical order, since they were all right there in the Japanese-ordered word file. Weird. There were a few other minor mistakes I corrected, but none worth mentioning.

Anyway, as I mentioned in the first post, Daizenshuu 4 and 7 divide the DB Earth up into 12 areas (A-1, B-2, C-3, etc). This is just a guidebook convention to help organize things, and not related to the 43 regions that the DB Earth is said to consist of in-universe. You can see these regions in the map of DB Earth used in Daizenshuu 4, which has been reprinted in some subsequent guidebooks and used in a few video games (often with some adjustments). Daizenshuu 4’s map covers only the manga, and so the various filler/movie places that Daizenshuu 7’s place dictionary includes aren’t provided with area codes, unless they are located in or extremely close to a location from the manga (such as the floating amusement park in West City seen in RR Army arc filler). Daizenshuu 7 does provide area codes for a few manga locations left out of Daizenshuu 4’s map. So while we can’t know exactly where they are, we can determine their general location.

Eastern Village (Kuririn’s hometown) is placed in B-4. This would put it in the same general area as Goku and Grandpa Gohan’s houses, Satan City, and Oolong’s village. Northern Valley, where Bulma found her second dragonball before meeting Goku, is also in B-4. So is Randosel Town, the place robbed by those two crooks that Videl and Great Saiyaman defeated Incidentally, randoseru means a knapsack or backpack, which is why Viz calls this place “Backpack Town”. There’s also a Randosel Tower in movie 13, the place Hoi makes his pretend suicide attempt and where Hildegarn later transforms into his bug form, but it’s located in West City, far away from Randosel Town. Apparently the movie people just reused the name pun.

The “Large City in Southern Region 48”, one of the cities Cell wiped out, is in B-2, placing it around West City and Ginger Town.

The pyramids that Blue was knocked to by Arale are in C-1, around Uranai Baba’s palace and Namu’s village.

The Southern Island, Oob’s home, is in C-4, around Kame House, the island where Goku and Kuririn trained, and Penguin Village.

The Southern Transforming Kindergarten, where Oolong and Puar studied, is in B-3, around Yamcha’s hideout, the Rabbit Gang’s town, and Castle Pilaf.

Would all living beings in Hell be strictly evil then?

Something that really bother me is the Otherworld is where dead people go however there are natural living beings in there too. Would those, like Akkuman and Shin-jin, be considered mortal beings?

I suppose not necessarily, since they're only from their naturally, and weren't sent there for their sins like the evil souls there. But I'd imagine Hell wouldn't be a very hospitable place for good people.

We know that Shin-jin can die (like North Kaio, Elder Kaioshin, and the Kaioshin killed by Boo), so that makes them mortal. Akkuman would probably be the same way. It doesn't seem like there are any true immortals in the DB world, unless you count Garlic Jr.

It’s the thing in the Fake Namek episodes that causes Bulma and co. to crash-land on Fake Namek. The term is 宇宙潮流/Uchuu-chouryuu, which could also be “universal current”, “space tide”, etc. Perhaps they got the idea from the book The Currents of Space? The Japanese title for that is extremely similar: 宇宙気流/uchuu-kiryuu.

Wouldn't the name "Universal Tide" imply a tide that applies to everybody(somehow?), rather than a "tide" in space?

The Japanese term just means a tide/current in space. Maybe I should change it to "space tide" to make it less ambiguous?

It's a physical realm. That's why you can take your body there and train it, like Goku, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Chaozu and Yamcha did. That's just the way it is in Dragon Ball. Actually, it fits pretty well with the Heavens in Saiyuki, which Sun Wukong visited and went on a rampage through.

Now try and picture currents and eddies in a timestream. :P

Huh, since Lunch with blue hair would probably not rob a bank, does this mean blonde Lunch was her original... "form," I guess, for lack of a better word, since I don't know the validity of calling it a "transformation." It's more of a disorder.
