Episode #0199! VegettoEX is joined by our buddy Kendamu to talk about the new DS RPG, "Attack of the Saiyans". Like the recent Wii game, is it another mostly-competent release filling an empty niche? Meri joins in to talk this week's news, December's releases, a couple e-mails, our contests, and some other banter to round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the (I'm gonna say) jazz-ercising *one-hundred-ninety-nine* episodes, now.

And don't forget, big party coming up!

My only comment?

I *hate* the term "J-RPG."

I didn't like it at first, either, but with "western RPGs" proliferating the console market more than they have over the last two decades (arguably), it's almost necessary to make a distinction.

Kinda like how when Weezer first came on the scene, everyone called it "nerd rock" 'cuz they weren't sure if/how to actually categorize it as "emo" since that term wasn't quite fleshed out yet.

Hopefully we'll look back in another 10-15 years with a better term...! But yes, my apologies :P.

You didn't talk much about having Broli as the secret boss and how you felt about including him.

Now in general, how long would it take to finish the game? I think you said it doesn't take that long to do it.

I think my comment about how, oh, hurray... it's a modern DBZ game, so it *has* to include Broli says a bit about how I feel. I haven't gotten to him, so I can't comment on his actual inclusion in terms of gameplay.

It's about a 20 hour game for the main storyline without extraneous item gathering and such.

Like I said during the show, there'll be a full written review up on the site when I'm done with it.

I think you should change the recap music to the second one in episode 200. You know the one that plays from 200-291. It will be like DBZ. You had the first recap music from 1 - 199. Just a tip. :D

Even to this day? That's... preposterously bizarre. And unlikely.

So sorry if you've gotten that reaction a whole bunch before Mike (I wouldn't doubt you have), but that was indeed news to me.
Well... I own it... and meant to play it over the last year since I got the new DS release... :?

Meri doesn't play JRPGs? Not even Chrono Trigger, the greatest video game ever made? Wait, you haven't either, Mike? Blasphemy! Get to it, now!

I got the DS version last year for Christmas, beat it in a couple of weeks, and have been in semi-retirement from video games ever since. It took me thirteen years to beat that game (sorta) and no experience in gaming could ever surpass it.

I'm looking forward to getting Attack of the Saiyans. I decided I would get this instead of Revenge of Piccolo for the Wii. I like this type of game to begin with, but I've been in a DBZ mood lately, and can overlook a lack a lack of uniqueness if it's Pokémon meets DBZ and I can beat it and fill that need without getting too involved.

I guess Abridged Nappa is right: Chaozu is a Pokémon!

Apparently, Mike also dropped FF6. :?

Torches and pitchforks, anyone?

PS. Mike, can I have your GBA FF6 if you're not going to finish it? ;P My GBA SP has nothing to keep it warm at night. :'(

I liked the podcast. I also liked when you read my email, I was "Jackie Chan" the reason for that is when I made that email I was joking and didn't want to give out my real identity so I did that. I have a new email now so that's not a problem anymore. Also I enjoy Attack of the Saiyans.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

No, I don't have Manga Strong anymore. Despite how much I asked and asked and asked for it, I never really got any feedback on it so I figured that people weren't interested in what I had to say.

I've got something else in the works along similar lines, though. :D

That's... actually quite briliant! :D :D :D :D :D :)

Deshlfit, now I'm going to have to learn about this "Western RPGs Vs J-RPGs" thing I never heard of before this thread. :?

No, this is the greatest video game ever made:
Image

Also, I loved Chrono Trigger, but I think it is a bit overrated. I would definitely consider it a timeless(lol see wut I did thar?) classic, but I think that Breath of Fire II is also just as good, if not better than Chrono Trigger, although I might be saying that because I'm in a Breath of Fire mode so to speak currently. Earthbound is seriously amazing as well, and is another that I would consider a possible candidate for best RPG of all time.

My opinions on RPGs don't always seem to coincide with popular opinion because I like FFV more than any other Final Fantasy(well, except for maybe FFVI which may still be at the top) whereas from what I've gathered the fan-base seems to universally consider it the worst "pre-VII" game in the franchise...

My taste in video games really tends to switch around depending on my mood I suppose. Sometimes I will like Chrono Trigger more than any other RPG, and other times I will like Breath of Fire II the most. But it seems to be set in stone right now that Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire II and Earthbound are at the top of my list of favorite RPGs.

They do?

Well I'm glad I don't give a damn about the general opinion of the fanbase for FF. I love FF5! I have yet to finish FF6, but FF5's got to be the best FF easily. If it weren't for nostalgia, I'd say it's better than FF7. :P
