King Piccolo went to space?
I vaguely recall a dub line where King Piccolo said he had fought many enemies in outer space and none of them were as strong as him. I'm 99% certain this wasn't in the manga, but was it in the original anime or just the dub?
Also if we were to take it at face value, just for fun, it raises so many questions:
1. When? Obviously not since Pilaf freed him, so presumably during his original reign of terror. So even though resistance still existed on Earth, he took random trips into space just to pick fights with random aliens?
2. How? The only way I can think of for him to get to space is by using Kami's spaceship, but that means Kami and Mr. Popo just let him use it?
3. Why? Having not even fully conquered Earth, he just decides to go into space? What would be the point of that?
4. Who? This was hundreds of years before Freeza and King Cold. The galactic patrol might have been around, so maybe he fought them? He seemed so sure no one in space was stronger than him (when I first saw that scene I just had to laugh at it as I had already seen DBZ and knew there were way stronger people out there) but apparently there weren't that many strong aliens back then, or he only ran into relative weaklings?
Sorry for the overanalysis, but I always found this line puzzling, even if it was something the dub writers just threw in without giving it any thought. It's almost on par with "Goku's father was a brilliant scientist" in terms of weird dub stuff.

It's just a dub line. Though by strange coincidence, I think Viz also liberally translated some line in such a way that it made it sound like Piccolo had been into space, or some such thing. Maybe. I'm a little fuzzy on the details.Polyphase Avatron wrote:I vaguely a dub line where King Piccolo said he had fought many enemies in outer space and none of them were as strong as him. Anyway, there's nothing in the Japanese manga or anime to suggest that Piccolo ever left Earth. At least not until, you know, dieing and hanging out at Kaio's and getting teleported to Namek and all that jazz.

Re: King Piccolo went to space?
I want to say it was just one of a few dub errors that were made due to the staff forgetting that this is supposed to take place before we all know a lot of what we'll find out in DBZ. I seem to recall a narrator line that referred to either King Piccolo, or his offspring, or Piccolo proper as 'Namekian' as well.

The thing is, this line would make less sense the more you knew about DBZ. If you hadn't seen anything past the King Piccolo saga, then the claim that he fought all around outer space and didn't find anyone stronger than him might be believable, but if you knew about DBZ you would know that there were tons of people in space way stronger than him.Gyt Kaliba wrote:I want to say it was just one of a few dub errors that were made due to the staff forgetting that this is supposed to take place before we all know a lot of what we'll find out in DBZ. Well yeah, it would make less sense to us, as fans - but to a writer on the dub of the show that may or may not care about it as much as we do, it could have just been 'Oh, right, Piccolo's an alien. Let's say King Piccolo went to outer space and kicked a lot of tail out there!', without them thinking about how we're not supposed to know he's an alien yet, or that it doesn't fit with all of the Saiyans and Freeza and his men.

That line made perfect sense to me when I heard it, since I saw Dragon Ball first. However, looking back, now it doesn't make a bit of sense. My bullshit explanation is as follows; He's just bluffing.
