Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
So it's time once again for a Box Office thread, this time for the Broly movie.
Domestically, Battle of Gods made ¥2.99 billion and Resurrection F made ¥3.74 billion.
Worldwide, Battle of Gods made $51.2 million and Resurrection F made $64.8 million.
Dragon Ball has really gained a lot of popularity since Resurrection F due to Super. Also the promotion of the movie has been much greater with it even having a Comic Con presentation so I'm expecting this movie to make more money than its prequels.
But how high can it actually go? Is it a reach to say it could do $100 million? It might be but it's not impossible. The exchange rate is a bit better this time than it was for Resurrection F which will favour it. Its releasing closer to the Japan release too. It all depends on how many countries it gets released in, how soon, how many theatres it gets in those countries, how many days it's shown for and how many showings it gets per day. There's a lot of room for growth from Resurrection F so it's going to depend on if they've done that.
Here’s a breakdown of the previous movies grosses in Japan as reference and I'll update this with figures for the new movie as they come out to make a direct comparison. I'll also give frequent updates throughout the date but only if people are interested.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
Finally, someone made a thread about this I'm gonna highball and say $200 mllion or more, I'm betting on this movie to exceed expectations financially like DB has been doing these past couple years.
$100 million seems a little low.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
I'm gonna say 80-120m depending how much they advertise it in the West, so far it's been mainly domestic merch and such.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
The first 2 million attendees will be given presents, so it will be front loaded as hell. Even more than the last film which was also heavily frontloaded cause it was giving away presents to the first 1.5 million attendees. ¥1bn weekend is more than likely, but collapse after that will be just as heavy.
This will be fun to follow.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
Bullza said he won't be able to make it, so he sent me a message from elsewhere so I could do it for him for the time being.
The movie has sold roughly 40,000 tickets from the midnight showings. I was told the average ticket price is about ¥1340 so it's made about ¥50-55 million so far.
The site updates every 20 minutes. There won't be anymore updates until about 10am Japan time.

Broly has sold about 21,000 tickets by 11am on Opening Day.
In comparison, Resurrection F had sold about 70,000 tickets by 11am on Opening Day.
So it's done less than a third as well.

Ouch! Thats not good at all
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
It was expected, really. Broly isn't that popular in Japan and more a meme character.

No it wasn't, still while I'm no box office or movie expert this is just opening day right?RedHeat wrote:It was expected, really. Broly isn't that popular in Japan and more a meme character.
In sum, it doesn't mean that much for the coming days and weeks ahead right?
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
Yeah, it's just opening night. But I'm not very knowledgeable about Japanese film releases but here in the states most of money is made during the first week or so. Opening night can give you somewhat of an idea of how it'll do in first weekend and such.SaiyanGod117 wrote:No it wasn't, still while I'm no box office or movie expert this is just opening day right?RedHeat wrote:It was expected, really. Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
What the hell? I thought Japan was super hyped about this film...
Did enough people read the details about the early screening and decide there was no longer any reason to see it due to spoiling the plot for themselves, or is the series just not as popular as it was seeming to have once again become?

Weekend in JP is Sat-Sun. Fri is an ordinary day. Of course, it would be lower than F which opened on Sat as mentioned. It might pick up evening/late-night today though cause DB's major audience is adults in their 20s-40s. They might watch it after work is finished.
Anyway, tomorrow and Sun will be bonkers.

2pm - 31946
7pm - 78031
80+ now. Adults coming in full force. It will end the day with 90-100k most likely. Who knows could be more.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
Oh sorry about that I should have specified. Yes, this movie came out on a Friday where Resurrection F came out on a Saturday so it naturally wouldn't do as well. The real comparison would begin tomorrow I suppose. If this movie can do better on Saturday than the last one even though it would actually be it's second day then that would be real impressive.
Anyway as of 8pm, Broly has sold around 125,000 tickets. Resurrection F had sold about 300,000 tickets in the same time. So now it's done more than a third as well because it's gained a bit of ground because kids finished school I guess.

So RoF was estimated to have made ¥91,000,000 on its first Monday. The ticket price for a child (in Elementary school or Middle school) was ¥800, and ¥1400 for a regular ticket.
So at the minimum that would be 65,000 tickets, or the maximum would be 113,750. There was a special pair ticket that was ¥2100, but that’s only ¥100 less than buying an adult and child ticket separately so that shouldn’t change things much.
I guess Monday for RoF was very likely 80,000+ tickets. That won’t be as big as if it opened on Monday I guess, but it’s something to go off.
Broly ticket prices are ¥1400 for regular, and ¥900 for a child.
All prices mentioned are for advance tickets, and I don’t know if they change much after the fact, but it’s allows us to get a rough estimate of RoFs tickets sold on Monday. If the Broly tickets remain the same price as the advance it would mean that it makes more than RoF in ¥ for the same amount of tickets sold, that combined with the ¥ being a little stronger this time round all seem to work in DBS Brolys favour.
During BoG ¥100 = $1.06
During RoF ¥100 = $0.84
During DBSB ¥100 = $0.88
Ofcourse these numbers would/will fluctuate, but currently it’s looking decent for DBSB, not the best, but decent.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Box Office Thread
Well also bare in mind that the 3D and 4DX showing will drive that average up as well, the best indication is this...Resurrection F made ¥960,600,000 million opening weekend and it sold 715,000 tickets, so that works out at ¥1,343 on average. I think that average may have increased slightly this time around but I'll assume it's the same for now.Sora Saiyan wrote:So RoF was estimated to have made ¥91,000,000 on its first Monday. Otherwise, Resurrection F made about ¥1.05 billion in it's first three days (Sat-Mon) so of course we want a good amount more for this movie between (Fri-Sun).
