Episode #0066! VegettoEX and Meri discuss the dub and re-dub... from 1996! Back when FUNimation was only just getting started with DBZ, approximately a dozen references to death were re-edited and re-recorded for the dub, so we listened to and compared examples from both versions. A little discussion on the review to our DVD Season One review, our indirect Digg-ing from the last week, a couple e-mails, and our contest round out the episode! Referenced sites:

"The Arrival" video was actually released with two different versions...

The cover for "The Arrival" with Goku holding Gohan had those original broadcast lines in it, and the cover with Goku shooting a Kamehameha at you had the redub lines.

Edit: I actually laughed out loud at that Tanooki comment!

Well, to my understanding... Also there was going to be a TV version of "Tree Of Might" on VHS. It had Gohan and his dragon on the cover and was shown with other DragonBall VHS tapes in a Suncoast flyer. I really can't prove that so if anyone here remebers that it would help...

And on the same topic. Pioneer had once released "The Arrival" in a very cool looking box with a Super Saiyan Goku figure from the Super Battle Collection. Just thought I'd add that

And I'll hunt for those two boxarts for ya, Tanooki.

EDIT:Ok... so it turns out that "Arrival" has had three vhs releases, as well as three different covers.

The first and second have "clamshell" cases, and also have the different boxarts. Here's a pic from the menu of "The Dead Zone", and here's a close up of the Kamehameha Goku cover. The third release is in the thin, regular-ol' cardboard case. It was used around the time when the "Saiyan Conflict" vhs boxset came out, I guess. Here's a pic of it's cover. The same cover is used on the DVD of Arrival.

If anyone who has all three of these vhs want to clarify if there are script differences in them?

As for a tv version of "Tree of Might"... if I remember correctly, it was split into three episodes and had a different voice for Goku, when it was shown in syndication, right?

And VegettoEX, you mentioned Meri had the Harmony Gold dub stuff of Dragonball. Do you think that might be up for download from you guys one day?

On the subject of the Raditz saying "Goku" thing. I do wanna say that there is a scene in the Manga where Vegeta says "Goku". But it may just be a Viz Error.

I watched the series through completely about 6-7 years ago when I did the episode guide for DB3K.com, and one of the things I thought was interesting was that Vegeta never called him Goku. I thought probably the most ideal time in the series to do it, had Toriyama wanted to, would've been during the scene near the end of the series (anime episode 280 I believe), when Vegeta delivers his confession that Goku is number one. That would've been the best/most meaningful moment for Vegeta to call him Goku, but I guess it was hard enough on Vegeta's pride for him to admit Goku was better than him that calling him by his Earth name would've been too much, heh. As far as I can remember, and I have an extremely eidetic memory, he always called him Kakarot.

As far as him saying it in the Viz manga, I know for a fact that Viz takes excessive liberties in translation after reading most of Dragon Ball, all of Kenshin and what they have released so far as Bleach. My best guess is in that scene, Vegeta was referring to Goku using "aitsu" and instead of putting "him/that man" to make the readers infer he is talking about Goku, they just did our job for us.

I watched the original dub back when it was being aired on Toonami when I was in 4th and 5th grade. My friends and I were all really into it. So into it, in fact, that none of us never realized that they were trying to avoid saying "death", "die", "kill", etc. It never occurred to us that Goku hadn't died with Raditz, and that Nappa slaughtered the Z-fighters. We just all thought "the next dimension" was the DBZ version of the afterlife. Which we were half right. Basically, my point is, even though they avoided those words, the meaning was still pretty clear.

The 90s were a weird time for children's television. Stuff like Power Rangers and DBZ caused quite a bit of controversy, and the mother's of those days were relentless picketers. Saban were pretty clever to dodge words that could spark more protests, and it wasn't just Japanese import shows that used this strategy. Spider-Man, X-Men, and the like used very similar ways to sneak around potentially offended parents, and "destroy" in place of "kill" became common in children's cartoons.

I like to think that most of this eased up around the time Pokemon showed up and took over America. The fact that 4Kids, while not afraid of censorship, certainly didn't avoid topics like death. Shows that came around after that seemed to progressively get less and less paranoid of "unsavory" topics, and put the focus back on creating quality programming.

And by quality programming, I mean, reproduce the anime style for unimaginative American cartoons, and dub every god-awful anime in existence. I hate culture.

The "Arrival" VHS I have is the clamshell case with the Kamehameha pose. Does anyone (Tanooki?) actually own the one with Goku holding Gohan to confirm those lines in there? I'm pretty sure I picked up the VHS almost as soon as it came out, and I have to imagine that if I did... and they re-did the lines... you wouldn't be able to purchase one with the original broadcast lines in them... Man, that's crazy.

I'll back up your claim on the TV version of movie 3 having a planned home release, but I'm 99.999999999% sure it never came out. I distinctly remember ads for it back on AOL in their anime channels.

I have the Arrival VHS with Goku holding Gohan on Nimbus. I didn't check every line, but I did look for the Roshi line of "I smell death in the air". It was NOT there.

This episode was good, yes indeed. Good times, good news, TV 5. (Obscure reference)

I kinda thought there was a lot of news considering that you didn't play your news stinger early on while discussing FUNimation's presence at MegaCon and at Katsu (which I attended) and their justification of the widescreen on the big orange box. Well, again, as repeatedly stated, FUNimation does many things right, but always somehow screws up something about DBZ. It is nice that new viewers and listeners are coming up the ranks thanks to these podcasts and box sets, though I don't know if 9-year-old kids should be listening to this podcast considering you guys swear like sailors and there's no content advisory on your podcasts

Good coverage of the early dub death cover-ups from those very early DBZ episodes, I must say. It's neat to look back and see how they skirted around the issue of death and all that. Thank you Haim Saban

Oh yeah, and I remember having a Game Gear way back when I was in high school. I even got the TV Tuner with the Game Gear and brought it with me on field trips and such.

It's a good compact podcast this week... hopefully sometime soon Meri's Top 5 will come back on a regular (or even occasional) basis. Keep up the fine work.

Great episode, you guys. Even though it was just Mike and Meri, I have to say that has to be one of my favorite podcast episodes yet. Mainly because hearing about this redubbing work way back then (I was aware of some through DBZ Uncensored, though not to the extent you guys revealed) was amazing. Big props to Meri for never taping over those original airings, how you managed to keep track of them is beyond me. Here's hoping we get a podcast topic revolving around the many dubs of DBZ movie 3, because Lord knows there're many to talk about. Someday?
