I'll tell you this, as a kid watching the Japanese variation of Dragon Ball Z, I was disturbed when Babidi had his head punched off by Majin Buu and all the blood game gushing out. I found that part very disgusting and it urked me a lot.
It's something to keep note of, perhaps watch a censored ...

Re: Viz reprinting the DB and DBZ manga box sets!
Yes, sadly, this is going to be the same censored old translation repackaged and repurposed so that Viz can get some quick bucks for the next fiscal year. It's par for the course for them. The Amazon description however says that there will be a double-sided poster and "collector's booklet featuring ...

But Gerard Jones worked on other translations that are still in print, such as InuYasha.
We'll see what these new boxsets yield but I suspect it's going to the same old, same old...

Well, it is sad to see the AnimeCauldron pages go but I really don't know who was keeping them up all this time. Hmm...

Re: Transitioning to the Japanese version (Z or Kai?)
I too would go with Z if you're a first timer, just because of the great old school animation, the original music (which I guess will kinda get old after a while but oh well), the original bloody fight scenes, the original performances, etc. You can just skip a lot of the filler (including Garlic Jr ...

Pretty sure it was dubbed for the Hong Kong viewers. I have vivid memories of the late great Anita Mui singing the theme song in Cantonese. You Westerners remember her from Jackie Chan's Drunken Master 2 and Rumble in the Bronx.

Re: How come Dr. Slump the Anime Series wasn't successful anywhere than Japan?
Probably it's related to the fact that Dr. Slump is more episodic in nature, Japanese-centric, filled with blue humor and alcohol and tobacco use while still being aimed at kids, etc., which would have posed serious censorship problems for the likes of Harmony Gold, and also there's the fact that ...

Re: Old Viz Graphic Novels
I wasn't aware there were Dragon Ball volumes before the ones with SJ on them.
But I guess I wouldn't if they've been out of circulation for so long.
Oh yeah, Viz first published the manga starting from the end of the 90s IIRC in monthly "comic book" form, several years before they launched the ...

Re: Why do westerners like Bulma x Vegeta so much?
"Shipping" is slang for putting two characters in a relationship, typically in fan fiction but can also apply to commercially released films, TV, novels, manga and comics, etc... EDIT: Whoops already beaten.
As for Bulma and Vegeta I thought when their relationship was first introduced that it was ...

Re: Was Dragon Ball really completely unknown in America in the late 1980's?
Kunzait often brings up bootlegging, but how big was that market? I have a hard time believing it was ever all that big, and certainly nowhere near mainstream. I'm sure DB was known in the US, but it was a very small number of people.

Re: Yamcha Appreciation Thread
I loved Yamucha when he first appeared in the story (and Pu'ar too for that matter). I thought he was really cool and that initial thing with Bulma was hilarious. Sadly Toriyama basically dropped him during the Red Ribbon Army arc IIRC, and there were moments during the Z era where I wondered why he ...

Re: Was Dragon Ball really completely unknown in America in the late 1980's?
I remember Gibson's stories about trying, and failing, to get more fans into it from way back, but I suspect that that's something that comes down to a difference of which specific circles of folks you hung out in (not a whole lot of crossover appeal for something like Fist among those more ...

Re: Was Dragon Ball really completely unknown in America in the late 1980's?
You're basically right; anime fandom of course did not begin with the late-90s boom nor with the release of Akira, and neither Akira nor Streamline's other releases were the first uncut anime released. Osamu Tezuka's Cleopatra film was given a dubbed and subtitled release in America in 1972 ...

I would say the reason some fans go on and on about that sort of crap is because they are only familiar with Z or have only glanced the Japanese version of Z.

On the other side of the world, this episode of DBZ aired the night I was born, on April 27th, 1994: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/episode/dbz/eps-225/

Just terrible news. I haven't kept up with any anime/manga related news for at least a couple months, and this is what I come back to. This and Nobuhiro Watsuki being arrested for child porn. BIG SIGH.

Re: The Harmony Gold Dub & Broadcast Audio Discussion Thread
I highly doubt that if FUNimation had all the necessary materials (which I guess is the entire point of this thread) and made sure nobody had anything to whine about, that they would do anything with this archival curiosity besides throw it on as a special feature on some future release as-is. It ...

But when I saw Kei17 Recordings my first thought was he remastered it from VHS Player because I would never say this recording comes from 1986-1987 years.
Nah, they do look their age, just a step up from VHS. Those tapes kei has have been phenomenally-preserved though.

Re: Why Does the Japanese Version of Dragon Ball Sound So Awkward?
I believe Steve Simmons chose that translation due to the fact that it sounds like what Cell actually said, which was "shimatta," a general Japanese oath. Basically a little in-joke. He only says "HOLY SHI-" because Final Flash cuts him off. Simmons must have thought it appropriate for someone who ...
