People often take an issue with this because it's such a rapid, if not vapid, change compared to what they're used to. There's a reason the Dragon Ball anime isn't nearly as popular as Dragon Ball Z. If the storytelling wasn't so haphazard, the change wouldn't seem so abrupt, but what do you expect ...
